Thanks for a great video series, yours are grounded in reality, function and logic. Your first I found was the one where you were weighing stuff before reloading the boat. When we first moved aboard our FP Tobago 35 that's exactly what I told my wife; everything had to be weighed,,, one new shirt on, one old shirt off, etc. Not much luck with that and me being the biggest offender of the lost waterline with tools, parts, materials, etc. Ours is a work in progress as well, though not as well traveled as you. I would love to speak with you offline regarding our main sheet system mods. We have a traveler and I was headed for the Catana style twin main sheets and winches regarding the preventer aspect of this plan favorably. Great summary of getting a cruising multi to go upwind. We also have a lite cat with dagger boards but I tell people to just get a nice light boat that sails well, rather than them being a necessity.

It is an all too common problem baggy head sails. So many boats we see are made baggy right from the start!

So the advantage of this main sheet system is it’s always prevented, but it’s more challenging to get the ideal shape you are looking for?

The primary advantages of this mainsheet system is that it is light and cheap to install. The mainsheet is only prevented when it is between the base attachment points. Once outside of this it is just like any other normal mainsheet system.

Yes it's possible. We need to reinforce the aft beam first and then buy and install the track and traveler. It's just time and money holding us back.

It's long before the element series. Yes it does hardwire into NMEA2000 network

As usual super interesting, in your case what can you do about your saggy fore stay?

Having a lighter forestay will help a little. Or if we had a better mainsheet system and could pull more main on this would also help. Best solution is we can recut the luff on our existing sail to allow for the sag. You can use runners but we are not fans of that approach as it creates more problems than it solves. It's worth mentioning Doyle's structured luff sails are moving in the right direction to resolve this problem.

I really appreciate your explainations, another great video.......so......why didn't you tension your forestay a skoch when you shook the third reef out? Thought your genoa was bottom tensioned or is that why you need a 3:1? Also you mentioned earlier about closing the gap with a barber hauler, it already looked like you had the sheet running over the edge of the saloon roof, is this a problem? Would a vang help overcome some of your mainsheet system limitations and control mainsail shape, or is that difficult with a large rotating mast? Must have been difficult deciding how much to push your single rudder. No criticisms just honest questions, cheers

All valid questions 👍 We have our storm jib on a 3:1 tack adjustment. The headsail is a fixed headstay and is not adjustable like our inner forestay. The barber hauler only pulls the sheet in not down so it continues to close the slot without the sheet hitting the roof. Our boom sits 300 mm from deck so no room for vang. Even if we could install a vang the load from the mainsail is so high the boom and vang would not cope with the loads

You mentioned the sag in the forestay. Does the furler / foil prevent it from being tightened/straightened? Should one consider loosening and tightening depending on the conditions?

The foil is independent of the forestay and does not influence the sag other than the added weight. We do not adjust forestay tension as that will affect the rake in the mast. On a racing boat you can change the settings depending on conditions but not on a cruising catamaran.

Im a noob sailor. does the Computer do VMG? I can do it with help of a calculator, but having it on the display would show the best speed and angles?

It seems to me, you have years of experience. I never sailed. Is there time for leisure, or enjoyment? It seems like constant work.

When you get to your next anchorage... yes. That is the leisure time. On crossings/passages, not so much unless you heave to, which is just standing still without sailing and letting the wind and waves drift you along. Even then you have to be on watch.

Sailing a boat is like driving a car. You need to pay attention to how you operate your vehicle at all times. The nice thing about sailing is it is an enjoyable experience and you usually end up in a wonderful anchorage at the end of your journey
