I never expect support from the shore side community. I’m doing something different, so my attitudes diverge from theirs. This alone is enough to make people angry in a society intolerant of differences. This is exactly why I’m abandoning the shoreside lifestyle. I have received comments implying that mine is an irresponsible existence. I’ll find other acquaintances who understand and respect what I do, and realize that it takes work. The captains mantle is the visible aura of responsibility that surrounds the master of any boat, irrespective of his character. It is an inescapable burden, a price to be paid without haggling or bargaining. The sea takes no heed of truth or falsehood; honesty and trickery are the same to it, and no exercise of these qualities will deflect its blows. A captain be he saint or sinner, must pay the fee in the only currencies the sea honours-vigilance, skill and endurance. No skipper notes with pleasure a brassy sunset or a big swell and the prospect of what will follow. Engines fail, rudders fall away, freak seas smash down-things to be neither foreseen or stalled. Might not this same gale now portending be the legendary wrath, that will rip plank from timber, breath from body, and lash the ocean from its bed to drown the land? In this Video I take my classic Sailboat maintained in Savannah G.A. for three years and relocate to Texas for another three years.
