I always like you guy’s opinions on the new gadgets at the show and they were great this time, especially the Boat Kit , the electric wench & the Deck Wash. That was a wonderful idea you had for both Fresh & Sea water! I bet he’s going to have it next year, in print! I was even more glad to see you win with your hurricane coverage, it was definitely the best & personally I think it makes people take the “Young Cruiser’s” much more seriously. I know it’s made me think more of them because they picked not only the Best, but the most “social or publicly” important subject . Congratulations!!

Congrats on the award. Well deserved. We knew you could do it. It was great to meet you at the boat show. I would not buy one of the "party boats" with a very wide stern and twin rudders. Would prefer something that can go to windward in a range of conditions with a skeg-mounted rudder. It would probably have to be smaller than Fair Isle. The Moody does look good. Congratulations on the award. As far as the wash down fitting goes. I've had one of those on my boat now for a few years and one thing I can say though is make sure you have extras of the blue piece that plugs into it. The notches where it twist locks into place wear. Mine hasn't seen much use because I'm not cruising full-time yet but it's already showing some wear so I picked up a couple of extras to keep on board

Huuuge congrats on your award. So happy for you. As to your questions: Re E-Wincher, big YES from us. We have one on a 47’ masthead mono and it’s a complete gamechanger. It gets the main up for us and the big headsail in after a tack and just makes trimming so much easier. It’s really reliable, only needs charging after a full day’s sailing and only seems to take 20 minutes or so to charge. And the app allows you to change the torque settings and check battery levels and much more. There are cheaper options but their sole advantage is price. Everyone who has used ours have gone out and bought one for their own boat. Loved the mattress and the pressure wash. But need some convincing about the Moody. In particular, what happens to the water that enters the cockpit? It seems to go straight downstairs, which would seem to break rule #1, being the water is supposed to be on the outside of the boat! Likewise the huge glass windows of the deck saloon, and did I see windows in the hull as well? Also wasn’t convinced about the practicality of sleeping in the bow on passage, so assume this isn’t a boat for night/oceanpassages??
@svfairisleАй бұрын
Thanks so much for the review of the eWincher that’s exactly the real world experience I was looking for. There are cheaper options but in my experience if someone has gone to the trouble of putting together a quality product that really works then that makes it worth the extra every time. Buy well, buy once. I agree with your assessment of the Moody as well, sorry it wasn’t a full tour it was just a Quick Look because it was something different that I know a lot of people will be interested in. To be fair though, although there are lots of compromises on a boat like that to make it very liveable but maybe not as seaworthy it is a Bill Dixon design and he hasn’t just abandoned all logic when it comes the actually going to sea! For instance as you rightly pointed out the huge cockpit with a patio door into the saloon does seem to go against our instincts re getting pooped by a wave, but there is an inbuilt washboard that slides across and the slatted section just before the door is a full length drain. Listen I wouldn’t personally want to be taking this into high latitudes but I dare say your average cruiser could probably coastal sail this for decades and never get so much as a splash in the cockpit!

Congratulations to you both. Well deserved! Interesting you showed the Moody 48 DS. We live on a Moody 45 DS since 3 years now and it’s really comfy with galley, saloon and cockpit on one level. Unfortunately the 45 has two rudders, hence no prop wash when docking in the harbor. But it also has a shaft prop and no saildrive which I dislike on the 48. Greeting’s from the south of Italy.

Compliments for the award, a fitting recognition for all your good work! Concerning the ewincher, I bought one last June, and tested it during our 3 weeks summer cruise from Genoa ti Sardinia and back. I'm very satisfied about it. It is very user friendly, re-charging times are short, the ergonomic is ok. For an aged (I'm getting 60 this year) short handed crew on a 38 footer it is a real incentive to use more frequently the sails even on shorter trips. Hoisting the main, furling the 130% genoa, everything gets easier. And even if expensive, I deem that it is a suitable compromise between a full manual and a fully electric winch setup. Ciao from Genoa, Dirk Modica

Great points being made in the galley of the Moody. I want to be where my boat is. More glass means more scenery. If your mattress problem is as you show in the video. Here's what I did. There is a loose cover over my entire mattress so it's almost impossible to grip it. I bought some of those really big diaper pins (like 6" 15cm) I had to sharpen the points. I stuck these into the bottom of the mattress with some 1" (25mm) thick webbing attached. You have to get the pointy pin through the webbing in two places. So two pins makes a length to grab on to. It's best to angle the pins towards the loop of the webbing. Now I can easily reach under, grab and lift the mattress, or tie some paracord to it and hoist/hold it up tying it to the hand rails on the ceiling in my cabin.

@svfairisleАй бұрын
Don’t know what you mean! We’re definitely aiming to give it another 10 years before we enter the middle aged cruisers awards! In a serious note though we’ve spent most of our lives reporting on disasters, people think it’s a shame bad things get the exposure but it’s just human nature that draws us in. It is always a good thing to highlight these problems though. In this case I think it’s really important that people learn that mangrove are not ‘bombproof’ and you are still playing Russian roulette if you stay in the path of a hurricane in one. Also the money we earned from the video and money that was donated because of it went on to save dozens of boats from the mangrove’s that were getting no outside help whatsoever. If there’s one good thing to come from this video I hope that is that the cruising community will pull together immediately in these situations and get outside help to people on boats not just on land, that didn’t happen in Carriacou until almost 2 weeks after the hurricane went through and because of that we lost many boats

Thanks very much. It’s a shame in a way because of course we had material to make it as long as you want but that’s the downside of working in real time. When you’re working all day in the Mangroves as we were then you end up editing all night, it’s a miracle the film made any sense at all!

I have an Ewincher 2. I really like it. It even has a Bluetooth app that let's you put your name into the device and check the battery level. I plan on buying a 2nd one. The biggest issue I've had with it is its stopped working when someone else uses it. Specifically they were using it to winch me up the mast. It's never stopped on my, but I tend to taoke breaks and not just run it on high "forever". My best guess is that it overheated for them. It has an overheat feature and maybe they ran it on high too long while hoisting me up the mast? Anyway, I have winches on the base of both my main and mizzen masts, so self powered winches would just be too much money. One or two Ewinches are a good solution. Hopefully it'll last. Congratulations on winning! You put a lot of work into your craft. Jason
@svfairisleАй бұрын
Thanks for the feed back, I was looking for some real life experience. Yes Brian showed us the bluetooth link up very cool how you can program in limits to max torque etc. If the unit worked shortly after cutting out then that was almost certainly a thermal cut out to protect it.
@jasonmcintosh2632Ай бұрын
@@svfairisle Well, I was up the mast so I don't know exactly when it started working again, but it's always worked fine for me. (They finished winching me up with a standard winch...) It's a bit surprising for me, but other people have had trouble putting it into the winch, taking it off the winch, and working the control buttons. So I'm half way up the mast trying to give instructions to someone who is getting very frustrated while I'm not understanding why they're having problems. But again, it's been great for me. The lesson seems to be don't expect a newbie to pick it up and use it. It's just a bit too tricky to use for someone who hasn't taken a few minutes to figure it out. I ran the battery out once after a day and a half of what I'd consider "light use", but maybe I didn't have it fully charged. Once I start cruising full time, I'll make sure I have an extra battery charged ready to use. Those boats at the show sure looked nice, but a new 40 some foot boat isn't in the cards for me. I tell myself that if life gets too easy, it'll be boring. With this in mind, I hope your life is more boring than mine... : )

Congratulations on your winning film. Was there on Saturday and Sunday. Went on a few boats, not so fond of the Ikea type interiors of a lot of the production boats. My wife was blown away by the Bluewater 65, I had looked it up before the event so knew what to expect. $1.65 mil can get you a very nice boat. I'm very concerned by how tall boats are getting with their hulls and pilothouses, sails you can reduce or take in. Not fond of twin helms, even less so twin rudders, but that’s racing, not sailing.

Great video as always and congrats on the award. Judy, with regards to the electric winch handle you used your body as the resistance but is that possible on your boat whilst in the cockpit or at the mast??
@svfairisleАй бұрын
Yes the thing we would want it for most is bringing in the foresails quickly. In light winds I (Steve) can stand on the aft deck and pull in by hand but in a breeze we have to take the furling line to the winch on the back combing of the cockpit, it ends up being a lot of winching and if were on a port tack the main sheet gets in the way of going around and around. With an electric winch you could just sit next to the winch as it's up on the combing and a good place to sit with the winch handle against your thigh.

Does that monohull with the tall freeboard make it look like it would be "Top Heavy" during a heavy wind? Also, my personal opinion of that boat was two-fold. It kitchen area, master bedroom, and head were nice but there were too many head-crushing obstacles to be struck. And even more so while sailing on anything but glass.
@svfairisleАй бұрын
Well it’s not top heavy, the Capsize Screening Ratio that I put up on screen will tell you that. 1.77 is actually very good. Anything over 2.00 is deemed not good enough for off shore sailing but a lot of modern production yachts don’t make that number or only just scrape under. Our HC is 1.62, so doesn’t beat it by a huge amount. It will however give the boat a lot of windage, so it will ride at anchor and be a handful docking in a blow. It does have bow and stern thrusters though to help with this. Not sure what you mean about the inside space. Personally I think they’ve done a good job, it looks different from many modern production boats which try to have big open spaces inside. This is a very bad thing at sea where you need handholds though so Bill Dixon had got that right with this boat for sailing rather than sitting in the marina

@GottenhimfellaАй бұрын
It's all very well to "assume" that a single rudder would have sufficient authority just because the designers thought so. Most successful designers have never crossed an ocean, let alone in their latest design. They don't have time. Also : As a result, they do not necessarily envisage, nor do they have to deal with, the scenario of a steep "wave from nowhere" climaxing to give an uppercut under one of those aircraft carrier aft corners. My sense is that such a wave under such a buoyant overhang would apply enough upwards leverage against the shallow keel draft to heel the boat so far onto the opposite "aircraft carrier aft corner" as bring the single rudder almost completely out of the water, resulting in one of those broaches where the seascape spins so fast your vision blurs. I may be wrong, but I would certainly want to find out before signing on to such a radical hull form as the Moody 48DS. I suspect that in practice, boats like this almost never leave the marina, let alone go off soundings, so perhaps it's not an issue.... But I hope it does not catch on and that people do not find out the hard way whether my reservations are valid.
@svfairisleАй бұрын
You are right to be wary of modern designs, it's an unfortunate fact that the majority of boats built these days don't seem to have been penned by anyone most people who know boats would refer to as a naval architect. That is why it's important to know the designer. Bill Dixons designs came off the back of the Fastnet disaster in '79, he competed in that race and learned from it. The Moodys and Hylas boats he designed after that event have been some of the most seaworthy boats available. I can't claim to know the in's and out's of the Moody 48DS having never even been out on it. But I can tell you if that boat had been designed in the way most of the fat arsed productions boats are to maximise space and volume then I would not have set foot on it at the boat show. The reason modern boats have twin rudders is that they cannot be steered any other way, dont let any salesperson tell you otherwise. The hull shape on those boats that take the beam all the way aft make them a liability. The Moody has managed to al least free itself from that. Anyone who follows our channel will no that this is not my sort of boat, but it's an interesting boat and a boat that is not just a marina queen so for some people would be a very good compromise if the only other boats on the list to satisfy the whole family is a catamaran or one of the plentyfull marina queen production boats on offer.
