I have a similar setup with LiTime for over a year with no issues. I will recommend one change. This comes from Nigel Calder. Put all the batteries on a bus bar where they are linked instead of on the posts. The batteries will draw better. They have proven this over time, especially with lithium. It will mean you will need to crimp new cables. I have their ac to dc charger, and that works great. I also have their mppt and dc to dc charger. I put an on/offswitch on my dc to dc Charger because I have a nice solar array, and I am in sunny California. I just didn't want that stress on my alternator all the time.

I am at 18 months on LiTine 6-100ah 12 volt mini batteries and they are working great. I am amazed with how much room you have on your boat to store all the kitchen stuff and the battery compartment. My Jeanneau 49 is short on storage spaces especially for kitchen appliances. I am going to try to copy your built in tool box if I can find a space.

@@SailingJibsea I agree with @maritimetees2315 the effective cable length is different for the batteries as they are connected post to post. If you have 4 batteries with 3 interconnects then charge from battery1 to 4 has three times the resistance than charge traveling from battery 1 to 2 whereas connecting all 4 batteries to a bus bar using 4 cables of the same length for both positive and negative will mean that the distance from any battery to any battery is the same ignoring any resistance in the bus bars. I'm only at 12:43 at the moment but I assume you cover all exposed terminals with insulating caps so stray metal tools cant cause inadvertent arc welding moments... Great content though...

Love these boat refit series.. how about making a removable panel for isolating the batteries from engine heat, so you can remove it if needed in higher latitudes? Also, I’ll encourage you to install a busbar, and wire each battery individually to it. Main reason is that you can fuse each battery individually, which is highly advisable for lithiums…. You know why!

Hi Steph and Travis, another great vid indeed. With the batteries, the AGMs are very heavy. Perhaps you could wire up a 12vdc starter circuit with the new LI batts and keep a small travel jumper as a backup. I like your videoos so much and especially how super clean you keep everything. Whoops. Not the word you wanna hear, as a crew member from your Captain. Same thing applies from your Dentist. Appliances matter - for personal creature comforts in remote anchorages. $29.95 seems to be the starting price point if you're interested. So long as that battery compartment stays cool with some air flow - with quick cut off option & fire ext. close by- mission accomplished Travis.

Instead of having a low temperature cutoff, use a heated battery. Many Lithium Iron Phoshpate batteries now have heaters to maintain performance and allow charging in lower temperatures. No one wants to roll over. Please secure the batteries. Always fully cover all battery terminals. Having them exposed is dangerous; among other things, a fire hazard. Same with the bus bars. Agree with the other comments: bus bar with equal length cables to each battery is the correct way to do it. Without that the batteries can get out of balance.

Travis, i am installing a li time upgrade myself and was very surprised you mentioned you would not use the 12V/12V booster from li time as it was not an isolated one. However as I see you have a common ground for your engine and alternator and housebank? So why not using the Li Time booster?

Travis you can look into a starter battery .. it's called Skeleton SnelStart 12V.. it is an ultra capacitor that gets fed by the house bank and the third stud goes directly to the starter and it weighs 20lbs .. I have used it for years and now Together with my Epoch batteries.

Normally the low temp cutoff is to prevent charging when too cold (which can dammage them), you should still be able to use them with a reduced amperage though

I may be repeating what someone already said (I didn't read all of the comments) - - - when you are running the power through an inverter (120v) then you calculate amps by dividing by 120v not 12v as you did. Just trying to help. So the amps for the espresso machine is 11.25 amps not 112.5 as you calculated.

Sounds like you hit Black Friday deals in Panama as well as Amazon. I recently picked up a Roto-Q 360 (manual, wind up rotisserie; no power). I'm hoping to use this in my smoker to do Duck this Thanksgiving. If you have any recommendations on brine, rubs, glaze, please share (unless secretly withholding for the Jibsea II cookbook:-) ). Wish you both happy upcoming holidays!

I've heard that lithium batteries have so many cycles before they go bad. If you drain them down to something like 20% or less than that is considered a cycle used. If you always keep them above the cycle than they can last forever. Is this basically true? Yes, I know that things don't last forever. I was thinking about getting Winston Lifepo lithium batteries like Sailing Life on Jupiter has. I'm not sure what model I'll get but what sold me on these batteries are their large plates inside the batteries. I think that they are one of the only companies that makes lithium batteries with large and thick plates which seem to be superior over other methods of making lithium batteries. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 3 сағат бұрын
All batteries have cycle lives. Lithium Iron Phosphate, which are now nearly universal in recreational marine use, have cycle lives in the multiple thousands of full cycles. As a practical matter, for a properly designed system, that's probably multiple decades of use. Other Lithium ion chemistries have lower cycle life but generally aren't used on boats. They also have significantly more potential safety issues. Which is also why they're generally not used. The cycle life also strongly depends on the depth of the cycle (how much energy is drawn from them before recharging). It's why a larger battery bank will have a longer life than a smaller one, for a given amount of energy use. And why it's better to charge more often, including from solar. Thick plates is an idea from Lead acid batteries, and doesn't really apply here. Buying cells directly from China is a bad idea since there are so many disreputable sellers of basically rejects. (Same with solar panels.) Stick with known western brands like Victron, etc.

You may want to reconsider installing the batteries right next to the engine, it will most likely significantly reduce their lifespan and can potentially even cause thermal runoff.

The word is runaway, and as Pierre correctly notes, Lithium Iron Phosphate are highly unlikely to experience thermal runaway. It's due to the chemistry and battery physics. Other Lithium ion chemistries can have thermal runaway, but those chemistries are increasingly uncommon in marine use.

You are kind of stuck with keeping a lead/acid battery for the alternator. Alternators self destruct if connected to a battery management system that disconnects the alternator from the battery. Which is what happens with lithium batteries.

That’s a serious amount of usable power . 900ah. With the agms you only had 210ah of usable power. You will have to keep an eye on them to see the recovery rate. A lot of power means a lot of charging. At a full 60a of charging would take 15 hours to charge from 20 percent to full. But lithium loves solar so every watt counts. I hope it all works well.
