What tricks do YOU use for a side-on swell, when there is little wind? A swell bridle only really works with decent, consistent wind. We had a big southerly swell and very light northwesterly wind. In the next episode, we have a go at building a flopper stopper. Stay tuned! :)

That is one of the problems in the Med. especially on small islands, were protected bays are rare. The best way I find is the way you just did it, or else you can get much closer to shore and tie a rope to the rocks. That is how its mostly done in the Med. I live in Malta which is close to were you are and here this is widely used, both for swell protection and also for lack of space.

Good one Joseph! We've seen shore tying done a lot in Greece, but nowhere else so far. Keep an eye out for Skua in August - we may pop over to Malta if the wind cooperates :)

I've done the same thing you did several times over the years, either with a small anchor I keep on board just for this purpose, set to the back, or with a stern line run directly to a tree on the beach.

A swell bridle is great if there’s consistent wind, but if the wind shifts or is too light it’s sooo frustrating. We are working on a solution to help alert when the winds shift 👍🏻
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, very true. We've gone for a flopper stopper, but we need to improve it (we build it in the next episode). We thought the wind was pretty much always from the same direction in the Caribbean :O

Sailing Kittiwake yes it’s always from the east, but just a slight shift to ne or se will throw off a well set bridle.

As people have already pointed out, try a flopper- stopper for the rolling, but how about using hammocks aboard Skua to get some sleep in an anchorage with a lot of swell. Failing that, try a “nest” on the cabin sole, to sleep on. The closer to the waterline, the less movement there should be. Loving your ongoing adventures. 😎
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 5 жыл бұрын
The floor “nest” is a great idea, thanks! We’ll try it. In the next episode you’ll see us build a flopper stopper on the fly 😀

Thank you! It was lots of fun :D Gotta love a free meal. It seems this trick only works in the Balearics for us though. Use the thickest, white flesh of the lettuce at its base for bait - it hides the hook rather well :)

Cheers Stephen! We can definitely do it once it’s not 36C. 😅😇 That’s the temperature where we are currently 😊 We only used it a couple of times. It has its own separate tank and you can see a but of the flame, which we love. Not sure you could cook on it though - the top’s rather small and narrow 😊

His name was Bill Summers. This would of been in the early 60/s. Mom got the call that Bill had died when he got tingled in the rope and anchor and took him to the bottom doing the same thing. I used two anchors one time but only one time. Was going to leave at 2:30 am. Those ropes both were tangled under the keel and rudder. What a wet nightmare that was. For me , Id of grabbed a pistol and the tent out of the boat and spent the night right there on the beach, Might of even made a little fire..

Take a line from about half way down the anchor chain to a winch at the stern and winch it in till your bow is pointing into the swell QED.

So is Skua less comfy on the hook than Kitti was? 🤢 Good job catching the bream, they were mad for that lettuce. Ive used bread and sweetcorn in the same way, but will try lettuce next time. 👍
@SailingKittiwake
@SailingKittiwake 5 жыл бұрын
Nope, Kittiwake would have been just as bad with that big side-on swell. Skua’s more comfortable and stable at anchor, side-on swell isn’t her fault 😁 it happens in unsettled conditions or bad anchorages. Yes, we only use lettuce, didn’t catch anything with bread ☹️
