Hi guys, Elayna I’d like to thank you for your lovely response to the message that I sent to you the other day on Instagram. It was very nice and shows that you are a beautiful person on the inside and outside. When I make conch, I usually trim the dark color off of the meat before I cook it or before I make a salad out of it. Cheers from Florida.

We used to have a real love for conch chowder. But here's our question for you Riley: Considering queen conch is endangered in the Caribbean and Bahamas -- and prohibited from collection by foreign yachts, do you think that maybe it would be a good idea to use your massive following to be a good steward of the oceans? Conch aren't everywhere. They're on the way out. What do you say? Future generations? Don't you have a baby on the way? Cheers Mate!
@kentfletcher85396 жыл бұрын
Please cite a source for that claim that Queen Conch are "endangered." I was unable to find ANY. While I they are likely being over-fished in some areas of the Caribbean, and we personally will forgo collecting or eating conch when we visit, that is not the same thing as endangered.
@SailingTranquilityBay6 жыл бұрын
Kent Fletcher, when you check into the Bahamas, by law you have to ask for a fishing permit. The permit is free. The permit comes with a list of regulations. It's unfortunate, but the queen conch is being dragged into oblivion just like so many other species in our oceans, while no one seems to notice or care. Just search "queen conch endangered" and start learning. Regardless, thanks for doing your part and forgoing conch. Here is one link of many with the Bahamian regulations: www.myoutislands.com/things-to-do-in-the-bahamas/bahamas-fishing/regulations

I'd still love to hear what Riley and Elayna have to say about ocean stewardship, and how they play a part -- whether they like it or not. It's a real shame that as one of the most popular YT channels out there they can't make themselves a little bit more aware of what's happening. They're setting a really bad example here. Here's some more reading for the uninformed. news.mongabay.com/2018/02/queen-conch-dying-out-in-the-bahamas-despite-marine-parks/
@Naplesfrank1546 жыл бұрын
In all of my trips to the Bahamas and dealing with the local fisherman, not once have I ever heard that they are endangered. Every time a diver goes down for conch, they would come up with at least 5 or 6 per free dive. That doesn’t sound like a problem to me. At worst, I can see them maybe creating a short season for the conch but I have not heard anything at all about the conch being endangered.

As others have mentioned, conch is very much like abalone and they require a lot of tenderizing to make them soft. I've tried cooking them many different ways and have found the best way is not to overcomplicate it with seasonings or frying. Grilling them and then adding a Spritz of lime and salt and pepper is all that is needed for a lite tasty treat. Thank you for your shows and all the hard work you put in to make them entertaining! Nicely done!

Another method to remove the conch without destroying the shell is to tie a line to its foot then tie a five pound dive weight to that. Now set the conch on two sticks over a five gallon bucket with the weight hanging, the conch will get tired and fall outof its shell. This takes a few hours so you what to do this ahead of time. you can put ice in the bucket if you what to do this while your sleeping.... I know it sounds silly, but it works.

Ive always liked Conch. Conch fritters are diced conch mixed into a cornmeal batter and fried like a hush puppy. Excellent with a sauce. In Jamaica our dive instructor cooked us conch. I did not see it prepared but suspected it was skinned and cleaned very well then pounded and steamed in tinfoil on the grill with lots of butter and garlic. YUM! It was so tender and not greasy. The best ever was when it was steamed lightly in the shell, extracted (no hammer, just a hook to pull it out), cleaned and sliced very thin into a garden salad. The meat was sweet and tender. Your video made me hungry!

Conch is a lot like abalone and even squid, gotta pound it to smithereens and cook it fast or it toughens up again. Breadcrumb batter requires a long cooking time, a beer batter less so. Also coconut oil is too strong a flavour for conch. Nice video though. A bit like hanging out with you for the afternoon.
