Hi guys, I'm an Emergency Doctor and just wanted to mention that your description of how to use skin glue was incorrect. You definitely do not want to put glue directly into the wound. If you ever do cut yourself beyond what a bandage can handle here are your steps. 1) Put direct pressure on the wound until the bleeding stops. Don't wrap it with a towel, just push a small cloth directly onto the wound. 2) Clean the area and allow it to dry. In general clean with lots of water. The cleaner the water the better, in particular do not use sea-water from shore areas. Do not use peroxide or other alcohol. Don't pour rum into the wound. 3) Bring the edges of the wound together. If you are going to use glue push the edges together and put glue across the wound, at least 1cm on each side. Glue only works if there is not a lot of skin tension (so not over an elbow or a knee). If the skin is under tension use long pieces of steri-strips or other tape based bandages to bring the skin together, in this case make sure that the strips go several cm beyond the wound to best support the tension in the skin. Hope you never need this advice!
@vidviewer1007 жыл бұрын
interesting ...I presume that by the time you get to 3) you have removed the small piece of cloth from the wound ?
@aaronjohnston27 жыл бұрын
Yup that's correct. The only reason to use a small cloth is to get people to actually put focused direct pressure on a wound to get bleeding to stop. Almost all bleeding can be stopped with direct firm pressure (think 1 or 2 fingertips pushing directly on the bleeding area). Frequently people wrap wounds in large towels which provide little pressure and do little to stop the bleeding, but absorb a lot of blood so make things seem like they are better.

Yes, FDA is an American thing. It stands for the Food and Drug Administration. They lead us to believe that they test those items to make sure you do not accidentally grow an extra arm after using the product. I am happy to see you learning to dock the boat like a legend and super stoked to see Elayna playing the guitar again. I can only imagine how excited you are to hoist that sail and to head out when everything is finalized. I am looking forward to that day.

I believe using Super Glue to quickly close wounds vs suturing was discovered in MASH medical units during the Korean war.
@danbauhaus95717 жыл бұрын
Indeed it was discovered in WW2 and used in Nam war for wounds. I was once on my FP cat in the Caribe and my knee slipped between the tramp crossbar and the hull, and gave me a big ole long gash, blood and all. I was about to snorkel, so I pulled out the super glue, dried my knee off, loaded the glue on over the skin, waited about 60 seconds and went for a swim. No blood, and no sharks appeared! So yeah it works!
@PzLoveUnityRespect7 жыл бұрын
well said Shane. Here's to the sailing couple!
@cv12steve747 жыл бұрын
"Super glue" is ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate. The liquid suture is 2-octyl cyanoacrylate, developed to reduce toxicity, skin irritation and allergic response. CA was invented by Goodrich in WWII to bond clear plastic parts of gun sights - didn't work out. Rediscovered by Kodak after the war (by same lead chemist), they marketed it in the late 50's. Locktite repackaged and sold it in the 60's, eventually outselling Kodak. First medical use was mid-60's during Vietnam war.

Hi you, love the videos. Just a tip on duel throttle manoeuvring I was taught recently and I found really helpful. Turn your shoulders in the direction you wish the boat to turn (one shoulder forward one back) now imagine the throttles are your shoulders this will help to work out what throttle to push or pull to get the response you desire, this works in forward or reverse. Handy in a tight spot and the pressure is on.

So many comments about boring upload. Or tension ect ect. You can clearly see that they both are waiting. Respect the process , geeze. True fans/followers are waiting with them patiently till they can get back to what they love to do. Sail. Not sure what people don't understand . I suppose they want quick gratifying always intensely exciting videos. Your channel is clearly going through a change with the new boat. "With great change comes great responsibility." That glue is what they mainly use in emergency rooms here in Finland. I study carpentry and got a booboo and this is what my school nurse did. At first I applied a lot of pressure, which only made it bleed more. Just apply a very gentle amount of pressure and if the wound doesn't dry up a little the glue won't really work. I LOVE you guys so much and am so happy happy happy on your behalf, however, a few years late. :)

Wow. ok, I just started a young channel sailing channel with an old sailboat (gib sea 37) and I used to watch your vids from the begging but since few month I didn't (to busy on my sailboat). So suddenly, you jump from a monohull to a cata that worth 500 000 Euros !!!!! That's impressive, well done. I remember you saying that a smaller boat would be a better choise, but with money, a good cata is super cool. I use to travel on a Lagoon 410 so I know the feeling a a cata. Personnaly, I prefer the mono hull, it's better to fight a wind comming in front of you. Anyway, keep going with what you're doing, It's a dream life and people seems to enjoy it. Nice vids, take good care of you !! SeaPixieAdventure

All caught up. Wow. I just binge watched your trip around the world leading up to today. Fitting as this is the most recent video. SUCH an adventure!! It's an interesting experience to travel through years of someone's life in such a short amount of time. One theme I've noticed Riley bring up, as well as some other very wise people you’ve interviewed, is to seize the moment and to take the risk … don’t wait until it’s too late. Some people say that life is a journey. Yours looks like quite a journey. But, I like to think that life as a dance. “When you’re dancing, you don’t aim at a particular spot in the room because that’s where you will arrive. The whole point of the dancing is the dance … We thought of life by analogy with a journey, which had a serious purpose at the end. And the thing was to get to the end … But, we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or to dance while the music was being played” (Source: Alan Watts and David Lindberg). You two have chosen to dance together, and show others how you dance, while encouraging everyone to get on the dance floor. It helps that Elayna plays such beautiful music. Thank you for sharing your lovely story. Oh ... I almost forgot ... any chance Elayna will be writing her own music soon? Cover songs are great, and you play them well … but I’m way interested in hearing your own music.

my wife is a pharmaceutical rep and used to sell that surgical glue. It's great. We've used on a person my son took water skiing who slashed his knee on a prop that was not moving (just lifted his knee up on the stationary prop). Avoided an emergency room visit by gluing his skin back together. A year later I had cut my scalp on the edge of a piece of metal rebar and i held/pushed my scalp back together and she glued it. worked great. no scar, but the glue looks like shampoo was left on your head for a couple weeks.

FYI...That glue for a cut is likely similar to "super glue" which is based on Cyanoacrylate, which was developed during the VietNam war. It will work but get familar with it's use before you really need it. It likely cures pretty fast and may make quite a mess if spilled in the wrong place. Oh by the way, if it's cyanoacrylate, it will burn like hell while it is curing. One last tip, like anything being glued, aline the two serfaces very carefully before bringing them together as it is possible to make some very weird scars! Don't ask how I know. lol
