Boot key was the best spot in the keys to provision. This was a different view than I am used to. I usually go Hawks channel , then offshore to Miami, my boat draws 6 1/2 feet. And I have 70 foot air draft. This keeps me offshore until port canaveral for a rest. There is also a good haul out yard in port Canaveral called cape marina. I don't know how far you plan on going north but it's there. Most haulout yards require liability insurance before haulout. My next haulout is going to be done in the Caribbean. Florida is a great place to source parts and supplies, but yards are expensive here. I had to get insurance, then haul and launch was 1000 and one month in the yard was another 1000. It's way cheaper in the Dominican Republic to do it, especially if you have everything you need with you.

Thanks for bringing us along. Dodging crab pots and cursing at power boaters in narrow channels will have you ready for a return trip to your old waters in BC's Gulf Islands. I am glad Choco was not eaten but I worry it is just a matter of when not if.

@sailorama no, I'm just a Big Fan. I do live very near the mouth of the Miami River downtown. But my friend Lance, who happens to be Canadian lives, anchored just off of The Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key. Lots of space there.

I feel your pain about crab traps. I'm definitely going to get a rope cutter for my prop shaft. I hope you guys do too. Just curious, if you could get a different engine would you be open to changing it? I had a Volvo MD11C before and finding spares was a real pain and parts were used and 3x more expensive than say Beta or Yanmar.

Yeah the boat came with a small knife-like rope cutter and we would be interested it getting one again for the coast here. We are also finding that the hardest part about having this Volvo md2b is sourcing the parts that we need affordably - definitely looking to upgrade our engine situation one day.

Interesting you mentioned poor quality bottom paint in Mexico. I sailed down to Sea of Cortez from BC on cheap bottom paint thinking the stuff I could source here would be more effective due to what I've heard are more lax environmental laws. Guess not 🫤 Anyway it's great to see you guys cruising again. Will you go to Bahamas or the Caribbean?

The mistake we possibly made with bottom paint was going too cheap. Getting paint in Mexico is always kind of iffy in general because we find that it doesn’t always get stored well (sits for too long and maybe sits in the heat) which is possibly what went wrong with our batch. We know the brand of hard anti fouling that has worked well for us in the past, and want to go with that again (interlux barrier coat and micron csc).

@@sailoramaYES! Another cruiser from BC used Interlux Micron CSC and had no problems. Definitely going to use that stuff next time.
