Not how we wanted to make it on KZbin! Ha. Hope you guys are well and enjoying the States. We hauled out in Key Largo and hope to start repairs soon. See you out there and please keep in touch. SV Zia (grateful to still be amongst the living!)

So wonderful to hear that you made it to a boatyard and will be doing repairs! We’ve been trying to get into a boatyard also, but it seems tricky along this coast. We’ll keep in touch - send us an email, facebook or any sort of message to let us know how it’s going!

Not sure where you guys are now but if you are looking for a DIY location consider Crackerboy Boatyard up in Fort Pierce. If you are eventually looking for a place to hunker down for hurricane season, consider going into Brunswick, Georgia.@@sailorama

Glad you made it safely! AIS is super important 👍🏼 I’ve sailed (mainly solo) as first a stick boat captain too lol until oh 10 years or so then could afford my first Beneteau and after oh 30 more years got my dream baby! My Oceanis 30 and left the caribbean / gulf which was my main sailing arena other than some mediterranean and a couple pacific crossings. In what world would one not expect crap weather in December in the gulf??? 🤣😂💙 I bet you never expected to miss complete islands irregardless and so glad you made it onto dry land!! Love your videos as they bring back so many memories of my teenage early twenties sailing years! It’s been over 45 years oh geez nvm it’s been 50 years since i first learned to sail with my older brother of the coast of sicily as a kid and it was on a stick boat as we fondly called it and then bought my first sloop 23’ er around 15 years old and left home to sail around sicily and the Italian coast alone. There’s just nothing like being on the sea!! Can’t wait for more of your videos!!

AIS can be a great tool - but also nothing can replace staying alert. We discussed a lot after this incident that as much as we want to get as much rest as possible during especially shit weather, perhaps our 15 minutes timer sessions of closing our eyes was still too risky, seeing as the catamaran had a lot more gadgets onboard compared to us, and still got hit. Good to hear that you are excited for upcoming videos! We’re excited to share again soon! Cheers to you!

Radar and AIS - despite all that tech, there are still collisions, yes it’s scary.

From our perspective, it certainly seemed like it would feel that way - and yes, it was the first thing they expressed over the vhf radio.

Sailing the oceans without AIS, that really isn't very smart, especially considering you're short handed. Stuck out in the middle of an ocean, with land weeks away in any direction and you get caught in a severe storm for a few days straight, 2 people will be exhausted and no AIS is asking for trouble. I can't fathom your thinking in not having such an important piece of kit. wishing you both the best of luck
@sailorama11 ай бұрын
Maybe you haven’t seen any of our other videos - we also lack a lot of other equipment that we wish to have. In this particular case, AIS didn’t seem to stop the catastrophe of the collision from happening. The best part about having AIS in our previous experience having it onboard has been being able to identify and call ships by name over vhf. So very useful, but we definitely have other things that come before it in our long list of boat needs.
