Bear in mind those nearby boats are going to love you as they will be covered in little rust stains from the little rust particles you are putting in the air which will land on them and then bleed in the damp. Thank you so much for your update from your project. You are doing a realy great job on this boat. I dont remember if you mentioned earlier about what is your scedual for this project... I mean, do you have any idea of when the boat should be ready for sailing, and when are you planng to do your journey and so on? It should be interesting to know... If you already did tell, can you please tell in what episode you tell about it and I will go back and watch that episode again... And just some safety advice from me.... (I'm a "tool guy". Working as rental tool maintainer).....about your use of your power tools. The needle gun give some very bad vibrations for your hands. Dont use it for long periodes, because it can damage the nerves in your hands, and give problems about your blood stream in the hands. The wire brush on your grinder splinter wire pieces that easily goes through your skin, and harm you quite bad. Use full face mask/shield when using it.. googles is not enough. Dont let this sailing dream become destroyed because of you get badly harmed or sick by working unsafe. Best regards from Norway.

When it comes time to replace parts of panels the neatest method I found is to tack weld a larger replacement panel on top of the area to be fixed
@p3512at4 жыл бұрын
And then use your cutoff wheel to cut both panels at a 45 degree angle . The excess outer panel is ground free, the patch removed and the excess inner panel removed. Then the patch is welded in. The 45 degree cut allows for a perfect fit with gap for weld and requires no measuring. Odd shapes are no problem.

It’s definitely worth considering. Join some of the steel boat groups on Facebook and pick their brains.
@aserta3 жыл бұрын
If anything, it's easier to repair. I mean, if you get yourself rated to weld steel under water, and setup with the most basic rig for it. You're pretty much set for life. Where as wood or glass, you'll have to come on hard. No way to permanently fix it in the water. An example, if you have a tear from a rock, you weld a patch on top from the outside, cut from the inside, weld a patch, and then you're set for until you're on the hard, where you just remove the patch and give it a lick of paint. Haven't done this myself, but i have seen it on fishing boats. In those, they pretty much just patch it with stainless steel and move on.

@needwindinmysails63494 жыл бұрын
Hi guys new subscriber here thought I'd say hello, and offer a couple of tricks that might help out, 1/ oxalis acid to wash down the boat with it will remove the rust staining and most everything else from the paint the good thing is even though it's acid it not really bad as in it won't burn you or anything like that, 2/ you need to make sure your pressure cleaner is not sucking air as it is in the video the results will be catastrophic if it keeps sucking air. 3/ this one for the inside of the boat for mould,mold you can use oil of cloves a few drops in a spray bottle with water it kills the mould,and you can also add it to your paint so it won't grow any. Cheers from central Queensland Australia where at the moment the temperature is around 42c everyday
@SailingMelody4 жыл бұрын
Wow! Great advice! Can’t figure out where the air is being sucked into the pressure washer? Why is it catastrophic? Good advice about the oxalic acid and oil of cloves thank you! We’ll do that. It’s currently 1 degree Celsius here 😂😂
@needwindinmysails63494 жыл бұрын
Why Catastrophic, It starves the pump of water and will dry out so it will wear all the internals until it seizes, Here how you should do it ,hook up water hose turn on full pressure at tap letting all air out of hose ,then connect pressure cleaner,then hold trigger on gun until you hear no more air bubbles then turn the power on and it should be good,but even a little bit of air caught in the hose will cause trouble , also when you pull the trigger keep it on until your finished don't stop and start as it will damage the relief valve,just thought I'd point this out, sorry for coming across bossy which i'am not it's just writing instead of talking, but they cost a lot of money to get and looked after will last your life time. Anyhow have a great day and enjoy the cold at least you can put more clothes on to keep warm, cheers

Hi. Yes we’re explaining this to people a LOT now 😂😂😂 We can’t sand blast in the yard. Period. Not allowed. They only allow us to book their sandblasting service. The yard has blasting facilities but it’s very very expensive There is no indoor area so the boat has to stay outdoors If/when we pay for the sandblasting we will have to wait for 2 days of warm dry weather It’s currently winter and horrible weather. For future reference, are you considering a fold-flat propeller that can trim the blades to minimise drag when under sail? Or isn't that relevant to your plans?
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
I have mixed feelings about folding props. I think for now we’ll stick with the prop we have as it’s one less thing to spend money on. When we do eventually change the prop then I will strongly consider a folding prop but I have a feeling we will have enough trouble reversing this boat anyway without adding a folding proper to make that even harder 😂😂😂 we’ll see though.
@markchip13 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMelody - OR a prop that you can feather, like a propeller driven plane - that gives you instant reverse too but with less hydrodynamic efficiency when engaging reverse, because of the profile of the blades.

I’m a paramedic now but I was a professional musician for 25 years and lectured in multimedia/film music at various colleges and universities. So although I’m not a professionally video editor I did a lot of lecturing in video editing and composing music and soundscape for film and TV. I did the film score for Girl23 by Tumbleweed productions and for Committed by Hotaches productions and I was the musical director and conductor for Les Miserables for a little while in Birmingham. I studied for a masters in orchestration and composition at Birmingham Conservatoire after completing my bachelors degree in music production

Don't want to sound negative but the only right way to do such a project is to totally strip the boat, then sandblasting in- and outside.
@SailingMelody4 жыл бұрын
Yep. Fully aware of that. That would involve....... Crane onto a low loader Transport to a massive hanger. Purchase of shipping containers to store interior and hardware. Strip down. Crane onto another low loader. Transport to a blasting facility big enough Blast inside and out. Treat with rust suppressant instantly. Crane back onto low loader Transport to spray shop large enough. Spray inside and out. Crane onto low loader Transport back to workshop. Refit under cover.... Can’t do any of that but thankfully we’re resourceful types where other people would give up. There are simply no facilities to do that in our area so have to find some other way.

Hi Guys. Wouldn't it of been safer to leave the guard rails and running rigging till last. That boat is pretty high up. one false move and you're over the edge. Think of little jack. Take my advise and keep jack and your wife off the foredeck. You must make a very stern rule from now on. Only yourself to be on the foredeck at any one time. There are to many hazards to trip and slip on. Good luck in your project.
@SailingMelody4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your concern. We are very careful and they will be going back on as soon as we have treated underneath them. Jack is only allowed to go forward when we are about and he must hold on at ALL time walking along the side deck. As for me (the wife) I think that pretty sexist comment! I do as much work on this project as my other half and am more than capable of moving round the boat safely. Thank you for wishing us good luck though very much appreciated 👍

You don't need "marine" epoxy paint. Use Penguard HB Jotun (two part epoxy paint. Painted my keels and there is no rust after a season. For the first time since I have my boat. Approx. £40 inc VAT per 5L. Drop me a message for the source and discount code if interested. Good luck.
@SailingMelody4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks so much. We’re already buying our paints from Jotun actually :) using Jotun87 winter grade 2k epoxy primer and then Jotun Hardtop. It is “marine grade” in as much as it’s used on boats, fishing trawlers, oil platforms and wind farms so it’s robust stuff. Thanks though

I know what you’re saying. But it depends on what we’re aiming for. If we’re aiming to get her “finished” before launching then it depends what “finished” means. Is finished..... 1. Floating and water right 2. Rig strong 3. Sails working 4. Engine working 5. Steering working Or is finished 1. Brand new standing and running rigging 2. Brand new sails 3. Full engine rebuild 4. Full back to bare metal restoration inside and out. 5. Bespoke hand made interior to an immaculate standard 6. Brand new electronics throughout 7. Brand new plumbing throughout 8. Water maker 9. Genset 10. State of the art navigation 11. Brand new cooker See what I mean. Once she’s fundamentally sound and useable we can launch and use her and live on her and it might then take 10 years to “finish” her yes but to be honest I don’t think you ever “finish” a boat in the same way you never finish a house. You might fit a new kitchen or new bathroom every few years and there’s always maintenance to be done just like any boat or house. So yes if we wanted to do absolutely everything to perfection before launching then I’d agree. But at what point can we dump her in the water with reasonable confidence she’ll stay afloat and go in the direction we want her to in a controlled and safe and seaworthy manner. That’s a whole different story. :)

UNBELIEVABLE Statement to make..... You don't have to " beat a child " if you take the time to teach them first. Only an absolute IDIOT would make such a statement like that. If you bothered to really watch these videos you would have seen that Jack is a very loving and well mannered little boy, not some stubborn mule in a muddy barn-lot. You have obviously been " BEATEN " to your head too much............. Jack, you are awesome ! ! ! Keep those videos coming ! ! ! !
