Nick; Good catch on the missing safety wire on the shackle. I noticed you used a common set of pliers to seize (twist) the safety wire. Safety wire pliers specific to that purpose are readily available, on line or at tool shops. They are primarily manufactured for, and mostly used in, the aviation industry. They are inexpersive and work much better, and faster, than other options. In aviation, safety wiring is required in various circumstnaces by a combination of good sense, specfications, regulations, and best practices. A variety of mechanical components are required to be safety wired, such as oil filters on recipricating aviation engines. In that application, oil filters ARE REQUIRED to be safety wired after installation to prevent the filters from backing off their tightened position due to engine vibration which might lead to leaking oil or worse. I've always safety wired shackles and other fitings on our boats, but once I became a private pilot and began doing some of my own maintenance (only as allowed by regulations) I became increasingly alert to circumstances in boating where appropriate safety wiring made sense. Originally, I bought safety wire pliers for the aircraft. Now I wouldn't install a safety wire for any marine or aviation purpose without using them.

Other than the boat hook (and Teresa 😉) What is the most important thing you have had fall off a boat? Seriously though, that easy access on and of the boat into the water is going to be amazing!
@sailingrubyrose11 ай бұрын
This is the second boat hook that's gone overboard! But to answer your question, it's a tie between a drone (that was very upsetting!) and when we left Gran Canaria on our Atlantic crossing many years ago, the seas were pretty rough with 45kts of wind, and we lost a heap of things over the side, including a cushy seat thing and all our fruit from our fruit net in the cockpit.

Boat that size really should have a much longer and more sturdy boathook on board. The aluminium ones with the polycarbonate hooks are light and easy to handle but invariably break or bend. I added a 7ft solid white oak boathook with a solid brass hook end to our Jenneau53 inventory years ago. Use it almost exclusively. The freeboard of your boat also necessitate's a longer reaching boathook. Just a though...the oak ones float as well. ;-)

Given that the national park says that all beaches are public property, I suspect that the hotels are paying to keep people other than hotel guests off “their” beaches. I’m glad you’re enjoying happier days. 👍🏼
@eclecticmemes11 ай бұрын
This is NOT true. Many national parks in Thailand are "Thai people" only, which I suspect that this particular one is. Thailand is a wonderful place and #1 in the world for tourism. I don't blame them for reserving a few places to get away from the hoi poi.
@rik880911 ай бұрын
@@eclecticmemes , I was referring to Koh Samet, not every national park in Thailand. My point was that some hotels there are trying to keep the beaches in front of their resorts for use exclusively by their guests. Locals are barred as well as visitors from sailboats, yachts, etc. Given they don’t want people coming ashore, I’m surprised they haven’t removed the mooring balls.
@HeadCannonPrime11 ай бұрын
Resorts around Koh Samet definitely restrict their beaches for guests only but I have not seen any "thai only" places. It is super touristy and lots of EU/US people vacation there. I'm guessing they are moored in the actual park though, which will have bouys for rent and they would have to pay the park entry fee if they went ashore. Most high end resorts don't have bouys in front of them and they don't let you just rock up with your dingy and park on their beach.
@eclecticmemes11 ай бұрын
@@HeadCannonPrime Go to Google Earth to the beach they are talking about 12°34'13"N 101°26'52"E It's clear it is a private resort, not open to the public. There are acres of beautiful beaches on Koh Samet with public restaurants 100s of meters away. This is not a case of rejection. It's a case of piss poor planning.

Enjoy the moments. I will say however that your what you have shared with your new catamaran experience has completely convinced me that a catamaran is not for me. I want to be able to sail long passages short handed (meaning with two people) and be easier to handle and manage overall so will stick with a monohull. All the best to you both. Cheers.
@paulgreaves997911 ай бұрын
Please don’t assume that solo/short handed sailing is any different mono/cat. I’ve covered >10k miles in 5 years on my 40ft Cat, mostly solo. It’s about how you set your boat up for solo or light handed cruising and learning/practicing appropriate techniques for docking, anchoring,mooring balls etc. The other big factor is safety, like clipping in every time you leave the cockpit underway for even mundane tasks regardless of if you’re alone or your partner is sleeping. These guys know what they’re doing, they’ll pretty quickly get in the groove with this new boat. I feel that very soon they’ll be a lot more relaxed about being able to handle their boat solo, even though that’s not their primary goal :)
@jamesneirinck41311 ай бұрын
Not assuming anything as in the last episode they stated themselves they will need additional crew when doing longer passages as things did not go well. Glad to know for you and your cat you are comfortable shorthanded single sailing.

Wonderful seeing you guys relaxed and enjoying yourselves. Your next job is to slow down - it’s disappointing to see how much motor sailing you’re doing when you’ve got a reasonably well sailing cat. It’s OK to sail at 2-3 knots if you only need to travel 15-20 miles, so if the forecast is not quite right and you can’t sail fast enough to go 50 miles before dark, rather than turn on your engines just switch destinations.
