That has to be the best output for any boat engine that I've seen, even at tickover you could run every electrical item on your boat, and still be charging your dinghy motor, without sun or wind!

My experince from a Balmar regulators. (not sponsored) Having a regulator that actually knows how much current (amperage) the alternator is supplying, and can limit that to keep the battery safe. And, yes, I know that lithiums have battery-management systems (BMS) that limit damage, but they do that by suddenly cutting off the charging source, and maybe the loads, too (depends on the setup), not something we want on a cruising boat. So it’s good, even if only as a fail safe, to have a regulator that independently knows the batteries’ voltage specifications and maximum charge current and will respect them rather than causing the BMS to throw a wobbler. Rather than making that simple required measurement, the Balmar stupid regulators guesstimate using a combination of time and how much the regulator needed to juice the alternator field coil to maintain the acceptance voltage. That’s bad enough, since different alternators have different relationships between field and output current (amperage) and, of course, how long a battery will take to charge will depend on how much it was discharged…duh. But wait…it gets worse. This stupid regulators have no way to understand how much of the alternator’s output is charging the battery and how much is supplying loads-they truly operate blind.

Rick, a few years ago Project Atticus installed a high output alternators with new lithium-ion batteries. I remember few details, but one thing still stands out is that there is a circumstance in which the high output generators can be fried. I don't remember the circumstance, but maybe a check with Jordan might help you avoid a problem. Also, there may be very little to avoid damage from lightning, but there may be something you can do to reduce the amount of damage. What have you done to protect your electrics, including alternators? I think what you have done is you have built a whole house emergency generator, except instead of being powered by natural gas as the whole house normally is, you have it powered by diesel. Yeah, 11 to 12 kwh would power everything in my house! Very interesting episode. Best, :¬) Webhead USA

there is nothing you can do to protect you electronics if your boat is struck. There are millions of volts going through your mast, creating all kinds of magnetics fields around. There are many instances when boats that were not directly hit by the lightning but were near the vessel that did got most of their electronics/instruments fried.

Just wondering what puting what is a substantial load on this engine at low rpm, at least more than what it encounters while pushing water at same rotational speed will do. My experience with actual tractors would say keep an eye on engine temperature! Also, diesels are designed with a sweet spot for fuel consumption vs power, once you get off that, they waste fuel etc… same for electrical motors/generators.
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady Жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s exactly why it’s important to match your rated output and hp requirements of the alternators to that of the engine at the RPM you want to run the alternators , exactly what we are working to achieve here, maximum efficiency at the rated output curves of both

Great Install. I was really impressed with your eye for detail, with the complexity of the install and the testing of the 1st alternator. I was impressed with the cooling fans that you made to be a part of the install. It was also great that you were able to put them on two independent drive belts. I have been watching your channel for several years and have never posted. I am posting now because I have a concern at what I saw at 3.24 minutes into the video. Not sure if you installed a heatshield between the alternator and the fuel filter/ rubber fuel hose as you can't cover everything in a video. On my Jaguar E-Type, the Britt's installed an asbestos (type material) lined steel heat shield between the brake/ clutch master cylinder/plumbing and the exhaust manifold. I am thinking you might want to consider something similar behind alternator #2. Coming from the racing world, I would also consider changing the fuel line to a braided steel line like race cars have. Hot fuel is much less efficient and if that alternator decides to light up, a fuel fed fire would not be easily delt with. Again, the only reason I am posting is that I care and surely don't want to come off as a know it all. Retired Race Car Driver Carl Bullock

I looked at 3:24 and did not see what you were speaking of. You may have mistyped and meant starting at 12:24. You have a great point and good eye. That sure looks like a fuel filter housing. If not the safety of this issue, just the few degrees higher diesel going into engine would be less efficient? I'm not a diesel expert by any means. My tractor can confuse the hell out of me at times.
@jimjones7821
@jimjones7821 Жыл бұрын
@@Abe262 Diesel ignites at around 450-500 degrees C when touching a hot surface. So I would say a diesel line near an exhaust could potentially be dangerous. An alternator is not going to get hot enough to cause issues. If your alternator is approaching 450-500 degrees C then you have other issues going on long before the diesel ignites. But it was an interesting thought and certainly a good thing to be aware of.
@Abe262
@Abe262 Жыл бұрын
@@jimjones7821 I believe he was stating the issue could arise from the alternator "lighting up". I took that as if it overheated due to malfunction. I only commented because I've had one get hot enough to cause the belt to fail and wire to melt due to malfunction. This was in a car, but same principle.
@jimjones7821
@jimjones7821 Жыл бұрын
@@Abe262 Understood and all good. It was interesting to dig a bit deeper to understand exactly what conditions are needed for diesel to ignite - its a worthwhile thing to know, especially in a boat.

I hope you're keeping any eye on the charge rate of your Lithium bank. I don't remember how many kWh your pack has, but with e.g. a 10 kWh pack, 10 kW charging rate would be 1C. Tesla cars drop below 1C around 65% state of charge (SoC) to protect the life of the battery. Also, the cell temperature is closely monitored - I hope your BMS is smart and you won't wreck your battery bank in a year or two. Even more dangerous is overheating cells. I think you said you have LFP cells (not NMC), they should be safe, but an NMC cell can get a thermal runaway and on a boat that means grab the grab bag and get into the life raft (or the dinghy).

Really Great Rick! -- QUESTION -- One thing I don't understand.. your engine must use extra fuel to turn that awesome alternator.. however, when you don't need all that extra electricity to be generated, do you manually press a button to shut off the alternator? When the alternator is "off" is the engine just as fuel efficient as one that does not have that massive alternator, or will you always sacrifice some fuel efficiency?

Very impressive. Great job walking through all the steps. I assume if you need full power from the engine perhaps punching through waves you can disable the alternators to get back 10 or so horsepower temporarily? Also should one alternator fail does it automatically failover or do you need to recable / jumper the good alternator. The blowers were very innovative. It would be interesting to see the temperature drop with and without the blowers. Nicely done as always.

Hey Rick, I'm sorry, when you put everything in "watts", ot sounds very impressive. However, there has to be others, not just me, that don't quite get it. Could you put it in "dummy" terms? If you use the A/C, is it taking power from the batteries even WITH the solar? I'm guessing, the amount of solar you have, its close. But if a person uses all the electrical kitchen appliances, does solar cover it? Or might you need more from the mechanical generation? I LOVE how you show all the electric you have, and how to make it. You said, its true, on a boat one needs to know how much power they are using. Could you maybe give simpler terms for me???
