Thanks for the videos. Once again the scene in the galley highlights your beautiful and creative refit. After losing 30+ cans of veggies in a 6 month period to rust. And we have a super dry boat. My wife and I decided to put everything in plastic.Zip lock bags,Space Bags or tight bins. We reuse all the bags. A can comes out. A new can rotates in.Our clothes go in Space Bags . My tools are in locking bins.Everything is bagged or binned. Two results. Zero mold or mildew and zero food loss.In two incidents of shipping on water and two liquid spills into our lockers we have lost nothing.Cleanup is easy. Pull the packages wipe them down. dry and clean the locker. Return everything. I have smiled with relief more than once as I watched something or other flow into my locker.Another benefit is this. Everything is beautifully organized and easy to find.It is a great pleasure to find what I am looking for clean and dry.You probably already do something like this. But I have been amazed at the number of people who never thought of it . Fair Winds . We missed the Bahamas for this season but are happy for our friends who are there now. S/V Sea Dragon

just a heads up, pickled veg doesn't need to go into the fridge. the salt and vinegar will keep everything from spoiling. that goes for fermented foods as well. hope that helps for future provisioning trips, cheers!

I live on a boat in the Caribbean. I never refrigerate anything pickled. Or mayo. I know...I know...but as long as you don't contaminate it...it's all good! Stick a clean spoon inside, don't double dip with a dirty spoon. It has never made us sick in five years. Learned this from other cruisers! Same for many, many store bought condiments! Great episode!!!

Hi guys! Quick FYI you don’t actually have to put your pickles in the fridge, if you ONLY use a utensil to remove a pickle (in other words don’t use your fingers😉) the vinegar will keep them bacteria free -that’s why stores keep them on the counter 😁 hope y’all are having a blast! Thanks for sharing! Hope this helps!

Great discussion guys! I enjoy it when you get into discussions like this. Your thoughts reminded me of something. In _Voyaging on a Small Income_ by Annie Hill, she discusses provisioning at some length. One paradox she discusses is that larger boats obviously cost more for acquisition, operation, and maintenance, so you want to go as small as you can. On the other hand, if you go too small, you're always beholden to the local prices which can be insanely high (as you've found.) For instance, she found that the first port of call after the common crossings tended to have high prices. If she had enough provisions on board to maybe pick up a few treats but wait for an island or two before doing the really big shopping, she could save a ton. The second thing she learned was how much she valued the ability to snag up those killer deals you sometimes see. "Ten cents per can for tomatoes?!?" Empties shelf! Not "Oh man! But where would we put them? Arg!" For her and her husband aboard, she found their 34' monohull provided the ability to store up to a year of provisions while still being small enough that other costs didn't get out of hand. (Not that she'd always have a year aboard. Again, capability.) I recommend that book to anyone with an interest in the full-time cruising life. Good read. Amazon has it in paperback and Kindle (No affiliation.) When I get seduced into the designs of the brilliant Steve Dashew and the like, I can always rely on Annie Hill and Lin & Larry Pardey to bring me back to practical simplicity.

Your boat was so quiet during the autopilot calibration. Electric drive makes so much sense if you're not relying on the diesel to go long distances. You'll like the freezer once you get one. My boats always got a freezer right away because I tend to spend three months aboard over the summer. I get those big family packs of chicken legs and fill both racks in my oven for a mass-cook. I make gallons of chilli in two gigantic kettles. It all gets divided into portions in baggies and frozen. There is a big freezer and a small refrigerator on my current boat, which makes the most sense for long term cruising away from the cities and groceries. The fridge is only for a couple days food that is thawing and some cold drinks, while the freezer has three months of frozen food.

We were just having this discussion with some new cruising friends a few nights ago. We totally get that almost everything here is shipped over from other countries, But so is Curacao and many other islands we visit. The prices here and in Turks and Cacios don't reflect simple shipping costs. Many other islands we've visited get a major chunk of their annual income from tourists (including us boaters) So they keep their prices reasonable and we all buy locally. But if you bump them too high, you get the negative spiral happening here in the Bahamas, everyone stocks up before the come over, and don't spend as much locally, making everyone need to raise their prices to compensate and the cycle continues. But many of the things we bought before coming over, you can buy here, but just for more money since they had to be shipped from the States anyway. The way we see it is, it's better to support local businesses buy paying for services or buying local fish and such, not just buying the same stuff you can get in the USA but marked up, then all you're supporting is the shipping / importation industry. Anyway, there seems to be no right answer, as we chatted about this for hours.

The hydraulic Auto-pilot seems to be much quieter than the electric ones which attach to the tiller👍😎. I’m always impressed with the care you exercise both in component research and installation.👍 The neoprene boot may allow water to pass depending on whether it’s open or closed cell foam. It may also be subject to rapid UV degradation depending on spec. They do make flexible neoprene paint which could provide protection from water/UV. If the paint was light colored it would both reflect heat and disclose degradation if the black underlying neoprene began to show. How do you keep the birds off your masthead and wind vane? 🤔

Just a little trick I learned to clean the anchor chain: - get yourself a tube/rod (wood, aluminum, PVC, etc.), about 1,5~2 meters long, with a large hook at the tip (enough to embrace your anchor chain) - pull the anchor chain back until the dirty part is barely at sea level, but still underwater - with the hook, pull the anchor back and forth a few times, while still underwater - the water flow created will clean that section of your chain much better than your deck spray and without any battery usage. Not to mention without all the mess that usually ends up on your bow after the traditional procedure. - once this section is clean, pull the clean section up with your windlass until the next dirty bit starts coming up. - rinse and repeat (it even works for cleaning the anchor itself) Since I have a pretty heavy 10mm stainless steel chain all the way, I usually just pull it towards the bow and then let it fall back free. The vibration and water flow cleans all dirt out.

Hey Guys it's finally happening heading south again...yeah! Just to let you know, mustard does not have to be refrigerated once opened. Also, they make mayo that comes in a squeeze tube like the new tomato paste tubes. Since no air can get into the tube you do not have to refrigerate it either. I've tried it, and it works great! Also eggs do not have to be chilled eithe as long as you turn them every other day they will last 6 months or longer. Turning them coats the inside of the egg and does not allow air into the egg thus it doesn't spoiil! Check it out on KZbin along with all kinds of other long term storage tricks!

@@spinnaker5514 no worries,I figured you know. I just wanted to put it out there for others just in case. I might be wrong on this but besides already being not so fresh. It's my understanding that the washing process strips some of the egg's protective layer off too allowing more air to penetrate the shell. I must say the first time I had a month old egg that never was refrigerated,I was a little shocked. Had I known before I'd have passed. But now it seems like they taste fresher longer. When we had our boat in west palm I used to go to BOW all the time. I gave up on West Marine, it seemed all they had was swim suits.

I loved this one, last video too, a Lot of good work y’all have done ✅ The boat looked like a NEW one when you walked away from it at the dock. I also like when you take us Shopping 🛍 with you But I would have liked to have Seen What you got at “Freedive” and your thought process while getting the fins, mask, Spears, etc... 🤷🏻‍♂️👍

I agree, good move to dock. You must be exhausted. On to the Bahamas! Have a great sail, and Happy Holidays.

You need to provision at Aldi's in the States! Better value than Publix. Winking Owl wine $2.89/bottle

I was gonna say that too. Or even Wallymart. Sams's Club/Costco or "dollar stores" for the name brand canned stuff. Regular grocery stores might be cheaper than the Islands, but its expensive compared to discount food stores.

No, they need to learn to start collecting coupons for those big buys and save half on that final price. Even weekly couponing can save them 50.00 dollars. I think for them, they are very computer savvy so going online and getting coupons will be easier.

Fair winds my friends. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas in the Bahamas. You guys have got to find a less expensive grocery store. Publix is infamous for being the most expensive food store in the south.

Guys, you win the all-time grocery store trip amount that I've ever seen. Then again I'm not heading to the Bahamas in a boat. Imagine what a family of 5 on a boat spends. I wonder how much Rolly and Elayna provision at one time being that they have all the room on their catamaran. I'll bet you still win. BTW, how did the new instruments install go? Are you thrilled, I am and it's not my boat. Have a safe crossing to the islands.

Still working my way through! Great vidoes! The new electronics looks so pretty! Brilliant job with all of that, getting all that food - must be difficult to know how how much of anything to buy, but $200 of wine sounds good :-)!

Just as a heads up. There is no cheap beer in the Bahamas. Stock up at Walmart before you go. Cruised a few years in the Bahamas and I learned this lesson after the first. Love your channel:)

👍Just FYI - 💝Digital coupons could have certainly helped with your grocery bill and there are cheaper grocery stores to shop at as well. Have you guys downloaded the Ibotta App? It’s excellent. 🤗💞🤗

Gwen du Preez - 👍I thought it was available every where, but I could be wrong. I downloaded the free App from the App store. I don’t go crazy with it and I buy stuff I would normally buy and upload the receipts to get a little back. It adds up over time. I hope this helps. 💝 Here’s a couple of videos about it on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b37QaaV5mtCVpZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/omrWf6OJitqaiLs
