It was an honor for me to do this small passage with you Alan! I had a great time at sea...it had been a while. The most striking things for me about Wave Rover II is that she feels like a much bigger boat at sea....behaves more like a 30 footer! The second thing is the rig! I can't say enough how impressed I am with the junk rig! So much less work and so easy to handle.....I'm thinking seriously of changing my boat to a junk rig. She is very safe at sea! Even when the wind increased to over 20 knots overnight, and the seas to 2 meters, she handled it with grace and strength! The cockpit was dry the entire time! Great sea boat! I would take her anywhere....and I know you will! By the way, Wave Rover I is still for sale.....looking for offers....

Alan has forgotten more about sailing than I'll ever know, but I'm not overly thrilled with the lack of lifelines around the boat other than in the cockpit area. In this video, I see there are times when you need to access the foredeck to resolve an issue. I greatly appreciate the simplicity of the design and all the effort it took to design and build her. Great luck on our adventure!

Every old salt I've talked to has said that lifelines, especially the paltry, low slung sailboat type are more likely to trip you than save you. If the weather is enough to worry about lifelines then you should be strapped in.

Wonderful to see her making way under full sail! So cool to get a close look at how it's rigged and find the arrangement now in _Practical Junk Rig._ That three-point euphroe span appears to be the very common and is said to be tolerant of the full range of sheeting angles without adjustments. Please feel free to demonstrate all the nitty gritty details you discover about it on Waver Rover 2 and everything you learn along the way. I noticed you chose to forgo a traveler for the sheet, for instance. I'd be lying if I claimed to know of what what benefit it would be but anyway now I get to see a real rig being put through its paces. Thank you so much for letting an audience tag along; this'll be grand!

Alan are you going to rig a guard wire between the pushpit and the roof corner? You looked vulnerable to "rolling" over the side when reefing. Do you have a fastening for the hatch when it's open? When you catch a greeny over the top it could slam shut with great force. Hope these comments help, they are sent with love and best wishes. Neil & Anne

About the halyard and other control lines on the top of the cabin on the starboard side. You are using cleats to hold the lines. Usually people use "line stoppers". The kind that you push down over the line. I see the following advantages with the cleats. 1) They are probably cheaper than the "line stoppers". 2) The cleats are easier to use. You don't have to push them down over the line. 3) There is less of a chance that a cleat will let go of a line suddenly. It's easy to check if all four are set up right. They will all look the same. 4) The cleats should not chafe (+/-) the lines. 5) With only one turn on the cleat, you can use it to release the line slowly like you would using a winch. -- I can't believe you back on the water. We will be following you!😎

Congratulations on your completion of the boat and the beginning of your journey. I wish you a safe journey and great sailing experience. I do believe personally that the contessa you sailed in you previous trip is a much safer and capable boat for blue water sailing than the boat you have built. If I had to choose between boats it would definitely be the contessa. I believe your present boat is more suited for coastal sailing at best. I will be following you with interest and concern for your safety. All the best in your travels.

I wonder if a toerail at the sides (or maybe one down the centerline?) of the aft deck would have been a good idea? Something to place one's foot against and perhaps double as a handhold. Sailing to Port Hawkesbury, my mother's father's family came from.Cape Breton. Met some of my 3rd cousins there several years ago. I have fond memories of visiting the island. My mother's mother came from Saint John. My most memorable story of her growing up in Saint John was when she "hooked school" and got caught on one of the rocks when the tide changed at the reversing falls. Wave Rover 650 looks very comfortable on the water. Don't forget to give Mrs Waver Rover the proper start of journey kiss when leaving Port Hawkesbury.

I get Divinycell H80 25mm for $250USD/sheet.. 50mm is overkill. Plywood is cheap, fast, easy to work with (and acquire) but difficult to maintain as years go by. Foam core provides more insulation, impact absorption, flotation, doesn't rot, and at 1" requires less internal structure (eg no ring frames). I do resin infusion which cuts my epoxy use in half and saves a lot of labor but I had to work in a boatyard to learn how. Fair winds Alan, love the aft deck, seems like a very safe and stable platform.

We had a Tanzer 22 in the 70s and my dad being the great sailor he is , would have the windows underwater 😂 Sailing was my dad's life away from work! His new wife doesn't like it so he gave up on it almost 30 years ago! He won the Figawi a few times and placed top three when he didn't win. PEOPLE , DONT LET ANYONE SPOIL AND RUN YOUR LIFE!! THATS NOT LOVE , THATS CONTROL!! Anyways , she looks light on the water! Do you notice a difference with the twin keels?? I would think if anything , you might not be able to point as far upwind as a deeper keel! Alan , you've given me some drive to get back sailing! Congratulations! The boat looks AWSOME! ..... Just wondering about the comment you made about steel and smaller boats... Why is it better to only use it when building larger boats?
@sietuuba
@sietuuba Жыл бұрын
The reason you don't see very small boats made of steel is that you can't make a steel hull arbitrarily thin to make them light but still strong enough so that the hull wouldn't eat too much of the total displacment, and therefore compromise the usable carrying capacity of the boat. I believe Alan built his first boat out of steel but this one is smaller. Where the "line is drawn" exactly I don't know myself; Alan mentioned a minimum of about 30 ft on the video though, so 9 meters. Imagine making a steel shopping bag... it would be heavy even if it was more like aluminium foil, and might not actually survive the expected dings and bumps. Steel is great for cargo containers and boats a little bit larger than WR2 but paper (wood fiber!) or plastics are strong enough and better for carrying smaller loads. Somewhere inbetween you can find glass reinforced plastics, carbon composites, aluminium, even concrete has been used for boats... and once you go big enough steel is the only option until humankind invents how to spin diamond lattice structures on demand. :-)
