Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Just wanted to add my two cents... when you connect the multiplus to shore power make sure to check and turn down the amps that it uses so it doesn't try to pull more than what the shore power can provide.. it will reset/pop breaker in the panel or heat up the extension cords... please look this up and research it...

The stiff bar can cause a lot of stress on the battery terminals ,cable is more suited on a boat even if you clamp down the battery they can move in heavy see. MP ,you are lucky to have a dad who's willing to share his time and learn you, good luck with the rest of the electrical 💡💡

I was going to post the same thing. Even strapped down they will tend to move. The terminals can break off eventually. I would use the cable since you have it and all the stuff to make them.

MP, that busbar connecting the two 12-V batteries is NOT a good idea for boats or even trucks. For houses , yes. But those batteries will move about slightly, independent of each other, (even 0.5 mm) causing strain on the poles, that will lead to those poles' failure and eventual destruction of the poles/batteries, even if strapped down. You may need to reconsider that connection, using two CURVED (C-shaped) piece of thinner wires instead (of that one busbar) that will accommodate the same current and any such small movements. Can't wait to see you (MP and BEN) actually sailing on the high seas !

I would rethink the solid bar connection between batteries. If the batteries shift even a little bit it could cause the terminals to flex inside the battery and damage them.

I made a comment about this, somebody else also did, and there is you. That would be THREE recommendations to replace that busbar. Preferably, with two C-shaped thinner wires that can handle the same maximum current as well as solve this possible problem (flexing, vibrations, etc). This will not be difficult nor expensive to implement. And I know Ben and MP do take advice from their online followers/supporters/well-wishers.

Congratulations on the switch on! I work in IT, and there is a similar moment every time you first power up a computer you have assembled. It's called "The burn test", where, if you have done something wrong "magic smoke" can sometimes be seen from the circuit boards and a burning smell becomes very evident. Not a happy moment, but even having gone through countless burn tests, you can't escape that moment of anxiety you just went through, even if everything has been triple checked. So we'll done! Bravery is always needed at such moments, and you came through! Got to say, though, while I deal in small parts of an ampere, you were dealing with massive (if relatively low voltage) power sources. I'm relieved that there wasn't a slip with a tool that might have shorted something out, that might have resulted in not only the release of much magic smoke, but a large bang and sparks everywhere.

The best thing is that MP has acquired a lot of tough skills, from mechanic to electrician and more. She should continue her training and get some certificates, that would help her to continue to develop her career, to be able to to earn. They can't take away the skills.

Using a solid bar between the two banks will limit the inevitable movement between the batteries and eventually cause the battery connections to fail. A flexible wire connection would be preferable. Go girl go!

When everything is up and running it’s a good idea to check your connections with a thermal camera. That way you will see any problems before they cause a problem. If any connections look hot then it’s worth investigating.

You might want to check your battery cables and make sure that they have room better the positive and negative cables so they don't rub on each other and cause a short and a possibility of a fire. Better to be safe than sorry.

When it comes to through holes in a ship, less it better and always make a pilot hole from the inside to place the hole just where you need it. I learned that while helping my dad fix up the sailing ship he built. Then you go outside and make the hole size you need following the pilot hole. Perfect holes each time.

Great Episode!!! My thought when watching the „bus-bar“ on the batteries: No matter how strong your straps or other fixings are going to be to hold the batteries in place, they will move a little bit. Your terminal won’t „like“ the slightest movement, I could be also vibration from the engine, it doesn’t need to be a rolling boat. I’d change them for short cables, especially as you have them „on stock“ already. I love your daily episodes and I know how much energy it takes to produce in this mode… Stay healthy and strong. You’re wonderful! (Yaba is wonderful too!)

The solid bar between the batteries will cause the battery terminals to fail as the batteries inevitable move around. The bar becomes part of the hold-down system and the terminals are not designed for that. Use a cable.

I would not use a solid bar between the batteries. Almost everything on a wooden boat moves. If the batteries move just a few millimeters, they may become damaged as the bar do not allow for movement. Best to make a heavy wire to connect them

Congrats MP on a big milestone with the batteries. Suggest you have a separate battery for just the engine and house equipment. Also, make a disconnect between each house battery in case one fails, you can separate it from the other good ones. Also, make sure you can switch the house batteries to jump-start the engine in case that battery fails. That way, you have a backup to start the engine for emergencies.

I like your work and learn a lot from you. Maybe a small tip, the batteries are heavy and theybwill each vibrate slightly different. If you fix them with a busbar then there will be a lot of force on the anodes when the batteries vibrate. Something has to move and your busbars might get loose. You make great cables with ringlugs. If you also use small pieces between the batteries where the busbars are now, then you will not have that problem.

what i like is how MP manages to give that last pump on the crimps to put the connection to the cable. MP could do that all day I jest . they do have motorized hydraulic crimps but cost, when you've got a Ben to do it your farther must be so proud giving his knowledge great job

Battle born batteries have a feature where batteries in series can balance (in conjunction with bms cell balance/protect). But battery balancing functions occurs only when the batteries are held at the high recommended voltage for a while, then the highest battery will discharge all balanced cells. Again this happens only at maximum charge voltage AND this takes time. If you have a long stretch where the batteries don’t get fully charged the batteries can get unbalanced and the higher one will trigger a charge protection which is punishing on the battery. If this happens you may have to manually charge the lower voltage battery. But there is a better way. Since you have four batteries, two in series, I would recommend that you purchase two Victron battery balancers. Then set the bulk voltage to 28.6. This should allow the cells in the batteries AND the batteries to balance. This would reduce the stress and increase their longevity greatly. Trouble free, no worries.
