For your bilge pump hoses and check valves, you might want to put the check valves closer to the pump. After the pump turns off the water in the hose, between the pump and the valve, will run back into the bilge. This can create a on/off cycling of the pump, when in auto mode, and ruin the pump and waste electricity.
@kevinthomas802511 ай бұрын
Very smart observation and great advice.
@RobertLake-mf2qt11 ай бұрын
I agree with you. The check valves are inexpensive and easy to install. The valves will also ensure the least amount of water in the bilge.
@pidjones11 ай бұрын
And, you can re-use the hose, just relocate the short section to the pump outlet. A heat gun will make the hose more pliable.
@skipbaker52911 ай бұрын
I Agree. Those hoses are a large volume and the bilge water will flow back in to the bilge from the Valentine's. Also they need to be accessible for service. Cheers!

Check valves really? Spend for something to hide a problem? Yes and then you have a real problem that was avoidable

Don't cover the access to the through holes until after splash . If there is an issue during launch , it will be faster and easier to get to any issues that may arise ! ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵

Dip the end of the plastic hose in boiling water for a few minutes and you'll get the plastic hose on the valve easily as it will be softened and stretch over easily.

Wave a heat gun at it for a few seconds, quicker and easier. They have one that they use for electrical connections.

Hi, I would have placed the non returned valve close to the pump so that when the pump stop the water in the pipe would not flow back in the bildge. Additionally, if nneeded to be replaced, it ywould be accessible without removing the fuel tank.
@clstjam432111 ай бұрын
Ben, consider moving the one way valve closer to the pump. As you have it, each time the pump turns off the water will run back down the hose flooding the bilge and re-activating the pump. Which will cause the pump to constantly be switching on and off as the water flows up and down the pipe.
@Pocketfarmer111 ай бұрын
Check valve should be as close to the hull as possible . When the hose fails the valve keeps the seal out of the boat. Through hull , ball valve, check valve then on to the rest of the plumbing.If the volume of one run of pipe is tripping the bilge pump raise the pump switch a little.The remainder can be pumped by the manual setting. This is not a set it and forget it kind of boat. Yaba will need constant vigilance.
@CaptRobH11 ай бұрын
Pocketfarmer is correct. Keeping your bilgepump happy is not the purpose of a checkvalve. Keeping seawater flowing in, through your bilgepump, IS. ( or -god forbid - water entering the boat, through a hose that slipped of your pump…

Have you ever read “The Cruise Of The Snark” by Jack London. The build took so long that repairs were needed before the ketch was done! It reminds me of Yaba because some of your outside brightwork already needs refinished from the constant rain and humidity. London finally said screw it and set sail with plans to complete necessary repairs in Hawaii. It’s an excellent read, I highly recommend it.

You need to put the check valve (no return valve) as close to the bilge pump as possible so that the bilge water that is in the hose higher up can't come back to the pump when it shuts off, otherwise it has the potential to cycle continuously.
@doncritzer279811 ай бұрын

I agree with the people that say to put the duckbill valve right next to bilge pump then the hose out. Will help you keep a drier bilge. I would put one on each pump as close to the pump as possible.

I'm going to say. The one way valve connected to the line for the bilge pump should be accessible even when the diesel tank is installed. If something happens and the valve becomes damaged you will need to get to it and make repair without moving the full diesel tank that could weigh 500 kilos. And, there should be a shut off valve to isolate that line before it goes under the tank and connects to the through hole. You'll be happy you installed the redundancy.

I did not see you do it and you may well of done, but I did notice you struggling to get the hose on to the hose connector. Just a tip to make it easier is to put the end of the hose in boiling or very hot water to make it supple and easier to push on. This also makes a better seat if you tighten your hose clamps when the hose is soft . Great to see you every day now and so looking forward to your splash. i have been with you from day one and actually thought you were both nuts.. I've never been so glad to be proven wrong. :-)

@georgewood869111 ай бұрын
Check valves should be installed right at the bilge pump. The idea is to keep the water in the hose from flowing back into the bilge when the pump shuts off.
@paulnielsen852811 ай бұрын
Crazy idea. You've had to re-caulk a few times due to the wood drying out. Is it worth spraying water in the lower levels to expand the wood a bit AND test the bilge pumps at the same time. I'm sure they'll work perfectly. Just start the wood swelling now before you splash Yaba.

When fitting PVC pipes to hose tail fittings dip the pipe end in a cup of near boiling water for maybe 30sec. It will then be effortless to slide in on to the hose tail. It cools down quick , it shrinks hard on to the fitting giving a water tight seal.

Olá tripulação do Yabá!
