💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.
More about us:

💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Adilson, Beto and Luiz. YOU ARE LEGENDS!

Even though Yaba is out of the shipyard the work will always be your companion. You are at least doing the smaller finishing touches and they are quite rewarding. When you get your sails your life will be much more interesting and your scenery will change continuously. I wish you the best of times on Yaba. You have earned it. Best Regards, Your pal Al

A refrigerator and a freezer are really nice to have on a boat. Yes, you two do make a great team. 👍👍 Ben, please, please, please use some safety devices while using a table saw. You scared the begeebers out of me. Short story; Back when I was in shop class in my first year of high school (fall 1978 😭), there was someone I’ll call Charles. He was part of the tough crowd, and could always be found holding court out on the smoking patio at school, when not in class. He was in my shop classes that semester. On this particular day he was using a table saw. I will NEVER forget that day. Running across the shop, screaming, and a rag wrapped around his hand with blood everywhere. He was back in class the next week. 1 reattached finger, and 2 missing tips. He was a completely changed man. Those images are forever burned into my memory.

yep i have to say, i always wince at others using circular saws, especially when its really boring to watch and you tubers think its entertaining to speed that footage up, i have to skip it, safety dudes, its the law, do not skip anything, things bite and bite hard - i am usually very savvy at these things, but having told myself to check a set of steps before climbing, grabbed a box, used the steps, and then used them another three times, before they collapsed, i was only on the third step, as they collapsed the back side was against the wall, the front that i was standing on pushed my legs forward from under me and i landed on my back, i laid there in agony before getting myself out of the situation, i got to hospital and later was diagnosed with a fracture to my T12, yep a broken back and two years on much better, but have problems still, safety, if you think, don't skip it, DO IT

hey Ben, consider supporting your round diesel tanks the same way they do on heavy trucks. you could use flat stainless steel strips to make U-shaped bands to hang the tanks from the ceiling. Your wood supports would still help secure the tanks, but bands would stop pressure points onto those tanks.

Hola amigos, When cleaning the hull, get 2 glazier suction cups. They stick onto to hull and give you something to hang onto. Get 12" stainless drywall knives. Google them. Add a 1 mtr handle. Now you can reach 2 meters from the surface. Makes the monthly task much easier

Fit a sheet of plywood on the inside of the diesel tank support struts. Put some strong polythene bags under the tank and fill them with expanding foam similar to your dinghy. The foam will expand to fit the tank exactly and transfer the weight to the hull. 100 gallons of diesel weighs 880 pounds ,so good support is essential. The full support will also stop the tank distorting under the weight Been a subscriber since day and i am really proud of the work you both have done plus all your crew! Yaba looks beautiful afloat, where she belongs.Alan here in the UK.
