Hey guys!! We are loving how much you participate on our videos and we really appreciate the fact that you comment! And for those of you who are incredibly kind to us: THANK YOU SO MUCH, we truly appreciate your support! Unfortunately, as our lives are focused on the refit, we are lacking time to respond to you all! Please don't take us wrong! As it's really difficult to answer you individually, we are going to leave here some information over the main questions we’ve been receiving. 1) What kind of wood are we using for the new keel? The wood we are using is Garapeira (Apuleia leiocarpa). 2) What are we going to do to avoid the worms to eat our keel again? First of all, we would like to clarify that what happened to the old keel was a combo of: neglected maintenance + boat stuck at the same place without moving for too long + tropical waters (worms’ favorite environment). As we are planning on moving and maintaining the boat yearly, the worms shouldn’t be able to feast on our hull like this again. Besides that, we will treat and protect our wood against the worms, for sure. For now we’ve been applying a protective thin coat of an anti-corrosion primer, to start protecting the wood from sun, rain and basically anything in general. As it’s very thin and gets absorbed very well by the wood, it also works as a treatment against cracks by simply nourishing the wood. We still didn’t define 100% what will be done afterwards, so we will share this information later on. We are sorry we didn’t mention this in the video… it’s been a very steep curve of learning and we often find ourselves so fascinated about the process that we simply forget to mention some other stuff! We hope this clarifies your doubts! Thank you so much for being here! Feel free to ask more questions, we will try to answer individually or, again, we might answer many at once like we just did. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND BE HAPPY Love, Ben, MP & Yabá!

I have been a carpenter since 1972 and have built a few small boats plus have watched a few larger ocean going sailboats built/ Always in a big shop with modern tools. Replacing a keel is one of the hardest and mot important parts of boat repairs it is going to be a pleasure to watch these men at work. I wish I was young enough to come and learn from and help these men.. Carry on!

Take one of the logs from the old keel. Cut out of it a plank with t one side still some remnants of the damage. Make out of that the tablet with some artwork and the large area with all the names. You two work on that. Prepare it, make it weather proof. This way the old keel will still remain with the boat, but now as a document of the revival.

I loved MP talking about a wood boat being alive. Lots and very diverse cultures have this concept, not because of the material, but of the conscious planning, effort, work, time and resources invested on it by many people. My personal favourite is an intersection between japanese tsukumogami, and muslim barakah. Tsukumogami are tools (and often other objects) that have a soul, by virtue of having acquired a kami or spirit due to being used rightly. Barakah is an islamic concept where the blessing of God is imbued into objects, places or persons, and is often "contagious" either by proximity or by adhesion to spiritual practices. So, an specially gifted artisan would transmit this barakah to the objects created. Sorry on the long comment.

It is so amazing for me to see the keel being made and perfected, with mostly hand tools and a small power saw and power planer. I have much respect and awe for the skill of your shipwrights. They sure know the craft perfectly! I am watching each of your videos in the series, to learn a little about how wooden ship building is done. This is a beautiful and very instructive video. It is simply amazing the level of wood Craftsmanship that you have there in Brazil. Here in the Delta of California there is only one maybe tow Yards that do wooden boats and the time is intensely slow as the people with the knowledge have simply retired or ceased on this type of Boat work. This is fascinating to watch them actually build and replace the keel on your 70 ft boat...And your videos are such informative and professional and enjoyable to watch. Keep going!

Hi Guys, what a great episode!I love how MP talked about the life and people who put there soles into the building of a boat.How many times there hands are on the wood, the time spent just crafting the one scarf joint on the keel it is truly amazing! Its the backbone of the ship, and the new beginning for Yaba, keep the dream alive!! The shipwrights you have there in Brazil are true craftsman and goes to show that with all the modern machinery we have, nothing can take the place of hand craftsmanship. I look forward to watching these skilled shipwrights bring Yaba back to life!
@JagLite4 жыл бұрын
They are doing a good job with the keel. I 'm sure they know that the stem and stern timbers will need to be replaced, at least from the waterline down. You mentioned the new frame ends as well as the planking needs to be checked one by one. Hopefully not all the frames will need work but you can guess that every plank below the waterline will be wormy and need to be replaced. Bottom paint will keep the worms from getting into the timber but you do have to haul the boat, scrape it, and repaint every year. The cost of labor must be very low in Brazil so I am watching with interest as the work progresses. I will have to come to Brazil when it is time to have my next wooden sailboat built and see what it will cost. I hope you don't run out of money before they finish re-planking.
