Hey guys!! We are loving how much you participate on our videos and we really appreciate the fact that you comment! And for those of you who are incredibly kind to us: THANK YOU SO MUCH, we truly appreciate your support! Unfortunately, as our lives are focused on the refit, we are lacking time to respond to you all! Please don't take us wrong! As it's really difficult to answer you individually, we are going to leave here some information over the main questions we’ve been receiving. 1) What kind of wood are we using for the new keel? The wood we are using is Garapeira (Apuleia leiocarpa). 2) What are we going to do to avoid the worms to eat our keel again? First of all, we would like to clarify that what happened to the old keel was a combo of: neglected maintenance + boat stuck at the same place without moving for too long + tropical waters (worms’ favorite environment). As we are planning on moving and maintaining the boat yearly, the worms shouldn’t be able to feast on our hull like this again. Besides that, we will treat and protect our wood against the worms, for sure. For now, we’ve been applying a protective thin coat of an anti-corrosion primer, to start protecting the wood from sun, rain and basically anything in general. As it’s very thin and gets absorbed very well by the wood, it also works as a treatment against cracks by simply nourishing the wood. We still didn’t define 100% what will be done afterwards, so we will share this information later on. We are sorry we didn’t mention this in the video… it’s been a very steep learning curve and we often find ourselves so fascinated about the process that we simply forget to mention some other stuff! We hope this clarifies your doubts! Thank you so much for being here! Feel free to ask more questions, we will try to answer individually or, again, we might answer many at once like we just did. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND BE HAPPY Love, Ben, MP & Yabá!

Yaba is really coming along. Your chippies are doing a top job. The limber holes that let the water pass through the floors can get blocked over time and I've been told a way to get round that is to get come plastic chain that will go from one end to the other on both sides which is half a meter longer and tied at each end. When you want to clean the bilge or check them just pull from one end then the other and the chain links will clear the holes which will make the job much easier and faster.

It really humbles me hearing you so often saying “ these are things we didn’t know” and seeing critics mocking your efforts, when all along you are learning from true craftsmen and will eventually know far more than those critics who profess to know more; what they are, are “ armchair experts”. 😎

Right on Todd , these are local shipwrights, or repair men who work on wooden boats all year without rich man's equipment. This is a great video . People need to see how they pulled this boat out of the water by hand .........

I am really GLAD EVERYONE has an opinion on shipwrights in a country or Island that repairs wooden boats for a living EVERY DAY ! Iam totally amazed at the way this is done wit totally raw materials. The scarf joint was amazing with eyeball dead reconning & no Lasers or high tech CAD . So what I am saying is I think the tools used are definitely OK for the job at a boatyard maned by local shipwrights. More power to this project. This is the way people live and survive every day life to earn a living.

The amount of man-hours and technical expertise going into this build is pretty crazy!! I bet these guys could build a boat from scratch!!! Now is the $65,000 question....... where will you be sailing once you get Yaba back on the water? Up and down the coast of south America? Will you follow the coast up to north America? It will be interesting to see how long it will take to get Yaba back on the water... I would hope before the end of the year BUT.................. Love your videos!! Ben seems like a great guy and MP is an angel in disguise!!!

I wonder if they realize how much time they would save if they would sharpen their tools. Their drill bits and chain saw were basically just rubbing their way through the wood. You could tell by the dust like shavings and the smoke coming off. Sharpening them would cut cutting time considerably.

i agree they should really be treating the wood joints with something as when she is finished thats where all the water inside the hull will accumulate. So now we are seeing more of the inside of the boat the outside keel timber is mostly wormed to bits but the inside is rotted due too water collecting in the hull below the water line. I am assuming they are water proofing the exposed internal surfaces once finished but agree would be better long term to seal the joints. Perhaps previously the vessel had a bad bilge pump. PS the carpenters know their joints as creating a keyed scarf joint aint easy
