There have been many ship restorations larger than Yaba , with the support from subscribers this is not a lost cause . These shipwrights are knowledgeable about these type of boats and probably have done many thru the years . In construction we use to say " With enough money and time any project can get done " . Demolition always comes first so don't jump ship yet as Yaba will sail again ! Go Ben & MP but please don't crawl under that engine again that was scary.

Ben, as you approach replacing the internals of the boat wiring, piping, plumbing I recommend that you label or color code everything. And include intermediate labels as you pass through major bulkheads. Near the end of your efforts in each category create a single line sketch of the wiring and plumbing. These steps in addition to the photos you take will help immensely when you’re troubleshooting in the South Pacific far from land

Hi MP & Ben, One of the joys of rebuilds/restoration is that the job can seem insurmountable, the more you pull apart, the more that you find needs to be fixed/replaced. The trick is to push past this time and just keep going. Plenty of people are just naysayers and just because they cant do it doesn't mean you cant. There are plenty here that want you guys to succeed (and I am one) so just ignore anyone negative. Onward and upward.

I know you say that 'People think our boat is doomed but we refuse to think that and will do whatever it takes,' but there does come to a point that you say enough is enough. I admire your commitment to Yaba and to keep going where many wont however there is a time to know when to walk away from something. It may not be what you want to hear. If you had shipbuilding skills, carpentry skills than paying a yard to do it then its a re-build project. This way is a lot of money. As somebody has said before its probably best get the guy's to start from a new keel, ribs and use Yaba as a parts boat and work on a new one. Nobody will say you didnt try with Yaba.

This is a story of faces . . . the shipwrights are all smiles, they know they have a veritable gold mine on their hands. Her face often shows a look of concern, worried and wondering, just how deep into this mess they are going to sink. His face, while I don't wanna sound mean or cruel, displays a distinct lack of understanding, a general look of innocence as he falls deeper and deeper into the repair, someone who has been blessed with a generous inheritance and is bet and bound to finish this adventure, hang the expense. What they are going through makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I wish them nothing but the best, but I can't feel they are fighting a battle there will be no honour in winning.

Lot of people are talking about cost here but wood is one of the cheapest materials to work with in Brazil. Country isn't exactly short of the stuff and costs of labour is also pretty affordable. And another thing, anyone who can buy a 50 foot wooden boat isn't exactly poor. They are spending money they have, people are free to have their own opinion, but this channel has grown faster because boat is rotted out hulk. Many channels with factory fresh boats have less engagement on KZbin.

This is a critical difference. Most of the people screaming out about the incredible cost are right. In western, 1st world countries, it would be ridiculously expensive, but in Brazil, where labour is cheap and wood is cheaper, that's a boat of an entirely different colour. At a rough guess, 2 weeks on a slip in any major western city would probably cost more than the entire amount of money for labour and material to effectively rebuild this boat (which is basically what they are doing).

It's incredibly cheap to have work done where they are, I'd be surprised it they have more that $2500 American into it at this point. The men are only making .25c American an hour, if that. They may be paying by the job, no one knows.

I hope but not sure these two realize that this project is probably not worth saving but now that the "boat" is on the hard what else can you do but keep going forward. ( other than just cutting the whole boat up and having a barbeque although the wood might not burn because it is so wet. ) I said quite a few episodes ago that you were using the old boat as a template to build a new boat. I was waiting for the deck to crash down over the rest because there doesn't look like any supports are left to hold it up. I really am rooting for you guys to get this done. It's fascinating watching the team of professional boat builders taking on Yaba. With minimal tools they are tearing apart and rebuilding what is obviously a complete right off. Compared to Acorn to Arabella and Sampson boat co, their approach is infinitely pragmatic. I went back through all the videos and seem to recall Yaba is not that old! I am convinced it would have been cheaper and more practical to build a brand new boat that would be infinitely more usable to both sail and manage than this old wreck, but watching this old tub get unreasonable love and care is enjoyable. My goodness I hope you have deep pockets...

Hey guys, this had to happen. When I first saw you announcing you had bought a sinking wooden boat, and saw the enormous shipworm holes patched up with pieces of plywood, I dounted you would make it to the shipyard and I suspected what you would find. Well, I am glad you made it, and I am confirmed on my assessment. You are doing the equivalent of building two boats: ripping up the original and patching a new one in its place. The cost will be double too. Did you not get a survey and prepare for all this? Or did you hope your Patrons would finance this venture? I admire your enthusiasm and smile at your innocence. Keep going!!.

I suspect the feasibility comes from cheap labor and materials. Expenses are nothing like the US over there, while if they made their money in a country that was in a better situation (or in an industry that was more internationally involved) they could support this for years on end. For example, a carpenter in Brazil makes 1.7k-5k BRL per month according to salary explorer, or an average of 40,200 BRL/yr. That's 7k USD per year per person working on the boat. Some of them probably make more (like the guy making the frames, and the guys who did the keel work), while others make less. But having 5 guys working on a boat for a full year is only $35k USD, which isn't much for the amount of work 5 people (+the 2 of them) can get done. (as shown by how quickly they've been getting through it, I reckon they'll be on the water within 2 years thanks to the number of people they're employing)

@@tombobtail7706 Insufficient sail plan for what? 12 meter racing? OK. It is for living aboard and motoring occasionally, which is what sailboats do much of the time anyway - since the wind is almost always directly on the nose. A sailboat is part fantasy that the wind will take you anywhere for free. A sailboat is also the most expensive way to see the world third-class. We lived aboard for a number of years and the reality of motoring is just easier and that boat has some large tanks to navigate along coasts with occasional jumps to offshore islands. Look at the ballast. Yaba mostly relies on its beam to keep it upright. That is fine for what it is. The bottom line is it Ben's and MP's adventure and mocking them is self-serving at best.

As regards that stubborn bolt: what I do is to grind the bolt head to bright metal then weld a nut to it, putting the arc rod down the centre of the nut then tacking the sides. If you want to reuse the original Yaba sign, you could insert spacers between the sign and the new hull. This would allow water to drain and dry, without collecting and rotting.

I really really really would have second thoughts about putting any part of my body UNDER this rotten, rusty, junky wreck. I really really really admire these two guys still have the guts and smile to keep the project going. I really really really hope they have deep deep deep deep deep $ pockets. Coz in the end they have to make a new boat as Yaba's only value is as a template how NOT to construct a boat. I know the rot situation might be different and that we might have a different approach and knowhow how to construct and maintain wooden boats, but in my country such boats normally last +50 yrs. If Yaba is only 15 yrs, I'm shocked.
@pidjones

If you plan to continue, find the original plans and make templates for the frames from that. This way, the hull will be "fair" - smooth, shapely, and the water will flow properly around it.

With all the frames out in the engine room if you don't take the time to pull the engine and rebuild it you're making a massive mistake. Even if it's fine, which it's not, you'll never have better access than you do right now. Pull it and have it rebuilt, yes it's expensive and will hold up those frames from being refit, but it's a lot better to do it now than to have to cut the cabin roof, or the sole of the wheel house out later.

@@corpsmanup5498 I don't think they're at that level of patreon support just yet. A whole engine would be really expensive due to import taxes in Brazil. However, labor is dirt cheap. A rebuild might be in the hundreds of dollars rather than tens of thousands that a complete repower would be.

@@bobadam7021 The Mercedes, Scania and Volvo engines are produced in Brazil. Brazil has a huge truck and car industry producing own diesel engines, those are locally marinized. No import of engines in Brazil or the power need to be >500 kW. All the wooden boats locally on the rivers and fishermen operating offshore are making use of the local produced engines. 99% of the vessels operating in salt / brackish water areas don't run overboard water true the engines but make use one cooling channel on each side of the keel (keel cooling). This avoid fouling of pumps, cooling heat exchanger and corrosion problems.

The anchorchain should have been mounted to the ship in order not to loose chain and anchor. As everything it looks like nothing is to standard on this boat. It is a huge miracle that the crew didn't encounter more problems when sailing the ship to the yard. I cannot imagine that this vessel is built only 13 years ago. Or the wood was rotten already by then. Unbelievable that there is really not a single piece of wood in a good condition. I hope the new wood is of a better quality. Such a project should make me and my wallet depressive. So I am still surprised that Ben and MP can report about the progress without tears in their eyes.
