It's a no brainer, as you concluded, I've just ordered one for my steel Van De Stadt 34' just the safety aspect of the auxiliary rudder is a massive factor, seconly there is no wear on your steering gear when in use unlike the servo pendulum vanes, I'm a tiller steered boat so that's not a major factor, mine is 4K including shipping to SA. Can't wait for it to arrive. Just to add to that the service from Will, John and the team at Hydrovane is absolutely fantastic. Kirsten Neuschaffer from South Africa, who is the only female entrant for the 2022 GGR has chosen hydrovane for her boat, for exactly the abovementioned reasons. If servo pendulum vanes are your preference then your two obvious choices are Aries and Scanmar's Monitor, the monitor is probably the best heavy weather vane for control and accuracy of steering but the differences between them are nominal, I have a Scanmar Pelagic autopilot which is by a stretch the best electrical autopilot on the market and if Scanmar made an auxiliary rudder vane that would probably have been my choice. But as far as auxiliary rudder vanes go HYDROVANE is the Rolls Royce. The Pelagic works brilliantly so I'm excited to compare the two, I'm doing a solo Atlantic crossing from Cape Town to Grenada in November of 2021 (based on the plandemic being less restrictive) and won't leave the dock without Heidi as well as the Pelagic and a redundant autohelm tiller pilot, It's as much a safety item as my liferaft and EPIRB. Great upgrade

Nice job! Use blue Loctite 242 on threads to prevent galling (stainless nuts and bolts like to weld themselves together). Also use TefGel or similar to electrically isolate the bolts. Or use nylon washers. Dissimilar metals + salt water= battery/corrosion. Keep an eye on the interior aluminum backing plates to make sure they are rusting away. Loctite 242 and TefGel are two things no boat should be without. Have fun tuning the vane in. It's sensitive to sail trim but if you can get the boat balanced (i.e. no or little weather helm) they work amazingly well and require no electricity. What name will you have for it?

If you squeese out the whole sikaflex, there is nothing left for the bond. Don’t tighten the screws up to much. After it has dried out you can tighten the nuts up a bit more for a realy stabile connection. Sikaflex don’t need pressiere for bonding. Other then that great job and very sattisfying watching 😉 Liebe Grüsse aus München Marc

That's exactly what i wanted to contribute. Awesome video but polyurethane kit is not the same as glue such as epoxy. This means: do not squeeze but let it settle. Especially on the inside you want a flexible layer as otherwise the aluminium backing plate will guarantee to cause polyester cracks at the corners...

Great work guys. We can really relate to the anxiety and nervousness when doing these jobs for the first time. It gives us the confidence to do things too. Most established sailing channels have experienced owners now who appear to be undaunted by any task. It’s fantastic to see the sadness of drilling holes into your precious boat turn to joy when it all works out. Always look forward to your next video!

Well done! I 've used an Aries wind vane on my previous boat (34 ft van de Stadt) and it never failed me. Even when a lot of electrical power can be made available nowadays I still prefer a wind vane over an electrical autopilot, no noise, no constant sorrow about battery capacity left in long passages, much higher reliability. When listening to your talking during the installation I was reminded that Mandy also speaks excellently German. Have you ever thought about doing a German version of your vlogs, maybe just using voice over technique ?

In principle, we do not put a steel, aluminum or stainless steel plate directly behind a fiberglass panel, because it can shear, and completely cut the place....!! we first put a wooden plate wider (serving as a shock absorber, then the steel plate...!! this also applies to the installation of the windlass at the front of the boat...but congratulations on your installation... you have installed this in a superbly conscientious way...
