Absolutely astonished that they took their family through this region. Even a year ago it is one of the most lawless areas in the world. Piracy is rampant, if a couple of gunboats caught you, the boat would sold, the adults might be held for ransom ( or thrown overboard) and the children either ransomed or just sold into slavery. As others have commented, they just don't seem to consider any risk factors. Do you think if anyone went overboard without a PFD (rogue wave) that they would be able to start the engines and turn the boat around in tie to save them? You won't see a thing in those waves.

There was a fellow sailor on a cat that made that route maybe 10 years ago. He was a dentist from Arizona I believe. He addressed the stresses on the boat (especially cats) with speed. This is great to see - I spent five months sailing in that part of the world back in 1998, and this brings back a lot of memories (most of them, but by no means all, good). Got blown off an anchorage - flat calm to over 40kn in just a few minutes - and chased along the coast for 36 hours, surfing swells almost all the way to Yemen, slightly scary and very tiring but also exhilarating. Beautiful part of the world that's probably more risky, politically, now than it was then. One of my greatest-ever marine memories is a couple of hours sitting with legs dangling over bow in bright moonlight, watching otherwise invisible bow-surfing dolphins making trails through the phosphoresence off the Hadhramaut coast. Socotra is insanely beautiful, and ecologically amazing both on land and underwater. What a fantastic experience of the world for your young people, too. Thanks for this, and well done guys on getting to one of the greatest remaining beyond-the-back-of-beyond parts of the world.

Wow the speed. At what point do the family wear life vests if not then? A bit nerve-racking. Great job keeping cool.

Quite the Robinson crew, I enjoyed the adventure. Risky tour around the cape , watching for pirates , be safe. Wishing you and family safe passage. How many tales would inspire.

I was afraid of that hatch blowing out and causing the boat to fill with water and sink like I hear other cats have done in similar situations!

I would love to do this, but I get sea sick. It's such an extreme nausea, and I HATE being nauseated. So it's a no go..

As a mother I want to give Renee huge RESPECT. Mama Bear I felt your concern in voice. You handled it damn well lady! I pray you calmer seas. And the Lord keeps a protective hedge around you your vessel and the family. In Jesus name. Amen.
