I thought about you Mads when my husband was making our children their Christmas gifts. He made a shelving unit for both of them. We had so much saw dust in the basement. At one time, he said that it was time to go downstairs for more glorious sanding. 😂 May you and Ava have a wonderful new year!

The company I work for does 3-D architectural and site scanning and modeling. While I don't do the work my self, some observations I've gleaned over the years: point density matters, do the math! Density varies both due to mode (fast/slow = low/high density) and scan distance (greater object/surface-to-scanner distance = lower density); Oversize point clouds can drastically increase computing time and file size to no benefit and can overwhelm hardware/software resources; Consider merging point clouds of varying densities to capture detail where needed while keeping 'flat' area point density low; One can print one's own 2-D targets; spheres (e.g. largish marbles for the hatch cover scan) make excellent 3-D targets for multiple view angles due to regular shape/curvature, a major advantage when scanning flat-ish surfaces obliquely; Scanning a transparent and/or highly reflective surface/object is a problem - covering/spraying them temporarily for scanning may be needed to produce a good scan.

Hi Mads, very interesting. I recently bought a 3D Bambu printer to make some parts for my model Venice water taxi. But first I had to learn to do the CAD drawings so I went to Fusion 360. I had a lot of fun and yes it was suceessful with both learning CAD and using the Bambu printer.I am very pleased with the outcome and can say that both systems worked perfectly. Cheers and Merry Christmas. Ian

Yup 3d scanning is cool tech, I do the same for work. If you're going to do more molds, make sure your part has draft on the sides to assist getting it out of the mold, and after you've roughed the cavity, do a semi finish pass with .25mm left on, then paint the cavity with lots of wood preserver (Totalboat Penetrating wood sealer or similar) This will harden the cavity surface, then run your finishing pass with zero mm left on, leaving a perfect, hard and smooth surface ready for wax. Its actually a good idea to seal the entire mold to prevent humidity affecting it... Made hundreds of mdf molds like this for laminated parts

Mads, I have Einstar corded 3d scanner and have been using it aboard my boat for a while, one of the things I can tell you about it, is that when it comes to building cabinets and what not, it is going to be a powerhouse for being able to match contours of the hull and fit things precisely. This spring I will be using mine to rebuild my engine room. Wishing I had the cordless as that is going to be so much easier not fighting a cord!

A couple years ago Ran Sailing KZbin used a Shaper brand handheld cnc router to cut out the temporary hull forms direct from a “cut file” from the CAD drawing for the 50 foot sailboat they are building, I think it’s more for cutting out 2D parts as opposed to 3D though. The tools available now for fabricating parts for the DIYer is fantastical, we are approaching the “replicator” from Star Trek. Cheers and good luck.

I absolutely love your videos-thank you! I’ve learned so much, especially about the immense effort it takes to restore an old boat. I do have one question that keeps coming to mind, and I’m sure you’ve addressed it before, but I can’t help wondering: Why invest so much time and energy fixing up your sailboat to travel the world only to start fresh again instead of continuing to sail? Life is short, and I’ve learned the value of being grateful for the little wins and savoring the journey while we have good wind in our sails. I know you love the work, and it’s inspiring, but don’t forget to enjoy the adventure from time to time. Sometimes, ‘good enough’ is better than chasing perfection-don’t let the quest for perfection stand in the way of optimal. Keep sailing and enjoying the freedom that brought you here in the first place! - your friend..

I do a lot of Vacuum infusion and would recommend using an envelope bag. Vacuum bag the whole mold by putting it inside an envelope bag. This will overcome any porosity in the MDF. Use plenty od mold release. 👍
@robm.451218 күн бұрын
Seconded, and just in case it didn’t get the attention it needed: USE PLENTY OF MOULD RELEASE AGENT AND IF IN ANY DOUBT USE SOME MORE…JUST BECAUSE HURTING A PRISTINE PART WHILE EXTRACTING IT IS SUCH A MASSIVE DOWNER. I’d also add that introducing a decent sized carbon patch into the layup around each hinge and latch area, and a run of carbon tow around the inside of the return on the periphery would make them pretty much bomb proof while also reducing any tendency for gel coat cracking at the edges in the long term due to flexing, but perhaps that’s just gilding the lily.
@davidseslar579818 күн бұрын
@@robm.4512 I guess you both are new here. Mads has done vacuum infusion before for Athena's rudder: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXrNf2yJnNJlp9U
@robm.451217 күн бұрын
@@davidseslar5798 Hi David. I’m not exactly sure of your motivation in posting that to me, I suspect that you might have misunderstood my own intentions when I posted. However, to answer your question and statement whilst also clarifying my own motive (and I suspect the OP’s) for posting as I did. 1, No, I’m not “new here.” 2, Yes I did watch the rudder build for Athena series of videos and observed the snags that Mads came across during the process, as is the nature of things when learning a new to you process on the job. I also provided a little advice then, as did a few others with professional experience in the process. 3, My primary goal in backing up the OP’s good advice and adding a little more detail of my own was to impart a little extra knowledge borne of a few decades of hard won hands on experience in moulding design, toolmaking and producing finished parts from both high volume production moulds and one-off single use temporary moulds such as Mads is using. To expand on why I felt that my comments could be helpful, not only to Mads but also for anyone else interested in undertaking a similar project, perhaps I should have included an explanation of the reasons behind the advice. The fundamental difference between the mould for a rudder half and this hatch mould is the relative area of the mould, it’s proportions, it’s depth and it’s edge form. In the case of the rudder half the shape provided easy access for blade tools to be used for separation post-cure, as was done in that example. With this type of shape that is not the case due to the returned edge and there is frequently an issue with such items in that the extremely large flat area, which will be the upper hatch surface, will present a problem with separation when attempting to extract the part. During the extraction process an object of this nature is quite subject to both visible and unseen damage during removal. That damage can often include overstressing the still relatively green layup locally around edges and sharp changes in section, such as the hinge and latch pockets, as the object twists and flexes during removal. This can also lead to local overstressing of the gel coat which can result in premature surface cracking and chipping later in the object’s life. Hence the suggestion of including carbon in the laminate around those areas to help stabilise them a little, which will also bring a benefit for the overall durability of the item long-term. I actually missed one further piece of good advice which is that there is a large benefit to adding a robust sacrificial flange of composite around the periphery of the item during layup, that can be trimmed off post-release. The objective of that is to provide a robust and easily accessible region to use pry tools against, which will present no risk of marring the finished part and will further protect what will be the finished edge from damage. A further feature that could be beneficial when the time comes to extract the part would be the inclusion of a few small diameter holes, typically stoppered with a skim of wax or a small vinyl sticker, in the floor of the mould and through which compressed air can be injected to blow the large flat area of the part free from the mould, breaking free any adhesion without risk of damage. This does however mean that there will be local spots that will require polishing out post-release. I assure you that I intended no slight or negative comment on Mads’ abilities and I would hope that if he has read my post he did not feel any animosity towards me or the OP, since clearly the intention was to hand on knowledge that is very much in line with his own objectives. I also hope that if he had he would answer on his own behalf, not expect another individual with no first hand knowledge or expertise in the subject at hand to leap into action on his behalf. I’m confident he’s quite capable of speaking for himself should he think it necessary and have great respect for his willingness to publicly communicate his true feelings when the situation demands. I wish you no harm either and I’m with you in that defence of others is a laudable goal, but in this instance I think it was perhaps a touch overzealous. I wish you a peaceful, prosperous, and above all a Happy New Year. Cheers, Rob.

Only you can do this. You are our sanding Hero. Wait a minute! If I am making two of these. Not 36000. glopping on silicon and pulling 2 molds takes x hrs. to do. Laying up both sides with a semi-solid e-glass-strand filler would make a stronger and cheaper part. I love the idea of the scan to print concept. This may be good for so many special projects. A waterproof carbon fiber Stradivarius would be great. I made a fiberglass deck step for a Hunter 40 legend that came out great with a packing tape plug mold. with gelcoat base I added chop strand mat and cloth. I trimmed it and covered it with fake white carbon fiber. It is slip-proof and when it wears out. It can be replaced in 10 minutes. Teak gets slippery and needs attention. How about a custom interior console with all of your instruments and multiple monitors to bling out that cat. Build out the interior like a starship. AI designed with human tactile handholds. Oh and a disco ball. Has to have a disco ball.
