Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how to attach a picture (perhaps someone could tell me). She is a 2002 build and has come out of charter. We got her at a great price and have not had to do anything major yet. She sailed us around the Adriatic for 60 days last summer. Me, my wife and our three kids. Its was a dream. We are getting ready for another big adventure this summer. I simply love it. How do I send a picture?

Very nice video! I have watched your entire series. By the way, your English is excellent - better than some native speakers! Regarding your chain locker, I recommend angling the lower "false floor" forward so water collects nearest to the bow. Then, put your drain hole and clamshell at the lowest point, nearest to the bow. This will allow water to drain away from your v-berth, as well as offer then most efficient and complete draining. I strongly recommend against any chain locker drainage to the bilge. The mud and gunk from your chain and rode will clog your pump system.

Mads, If you install a small clam shell vent over the exterior hole and have the opening aiming slightly aft. It will let the locker drain and won't let water in even when heeled over. You put one on either side if needed.
@SailLife

Mads, Another great video!!! I think the clam-shell cover will work well if you put it on the starboard side which will take advantage of your coincidental angled shelf. Maybe you could put a small ball valve draining into the bilge in case you have to drain the locker due to a blocked drainpipe or other cause.. Keep up the great videos!!! I virtually sit at my computer and wait for them!!! Also, say hi to jökull :) Cheers from Australia Morgan

Looking forward to the outcome of this. I have considered cutting out ours and doing a locker just at the very bow with a vertical windlass. I was reading some where that a sealed locker is preferable on a cruising boat. You may want to create a low area for the drain so it drains completely. Ours has a funnel shape and drains almost vertical through the center of the bow just above the waterline. Good luck

Wonder if you put the drain in the bottom (or the floor) of your chain locker THEN run a hose to the hull to drain. That might keep water from entering the boat more. Just a suggestion. Great videos by the way... Joe
@SailLife
@SailLife 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Lipcovich Thanks, Joe :) I appreciate your support :) That would be a fun experiment! I'm planning on using a small clam-shell vent cover (facing away from normal water flow) mounted on the outside of the hull (covering the drain hole). That seems to be very common around here :) Perhaps I should do two test. One without the clam-shell vent cover and one with. Just to see how much of a difference it makes :)

Love it! Would angle the floor of your chain locker so it doesn't leave a place for water to puddle. Not sure about the drain hole through the hull...I'd be worry of water accumulating. Could you put a one way valve so it can only drain out?
@SailLife
@SailLife 9 жыл бұрын
Itchy Brother Thanks! :) I think your right :) By a happy coincidence it turns out the bottom of the chain locker is slanting slightly towards starboard ;) Draining the an anchor or chain locker overboard is by far the most common way of doing it around these parts. To be honest, I had never seen or heard of a boat draining the chain locker to the bilge before reading the comments on the previous video. From what I've heard adding a one way valve would be a very bad idea. What is commonly used instead is a small clam-shell vent cover, facing away from normal water flow, so it purges the locker and deflects water from intrusion :) I'll grab a picture of how this is done aboard other boats and add that to part 4 of this series (part 3 is already done)

Looks like it will be a great locker! I was wondering about where the water was going to drain and that is a good solution! I wonder if a very low level piece of grated plastic on the bottom of the locker would be a good idea so that your anchor chain and rode aren't sitting on the wet bottom part of the locker. :)
@SailLife
@SailLife 9 жыл бұрын
LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC Thanks, Alfy :) I figured the motion of the boat would help drain the chain locker but after reading all the comments I think I should properly rethink that solution :) By a happy coincidence the bottom of the chain locker does slant slightly towards starboard ;) I might need to come up with a better solution than that :)

***** Hi Mads, A possible solution could be to have a (custom made) stainless steel or plastic grid on the floor of your chain locker. In that way the chain resides on the metal grid, which is positioned a few centimeters above the locker floor and above the drain hole. Cheers !

I echo the concern about draining the chain locker through the hull. In a heavy sea you might take on water through that perforation. Will you install a one way valve through the hull to prevent that?
@mysaltytravel
@mysaltytravel 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Mads, good work! We drilled the draining holes in the back corners of the chainlocker (on both sides 10mm each), because its the deepest point. So it will drain easier and no water stays in the the locker...From the outside we mounted this to cover the holes: www.svb.de/de/mini-lenzer.html

What will your drain holes do when you are somewhere with waves? Even in relatively light seas I've been surprised by how high the waves climb on the freeboard.

Tommy Jinks Funny you should mention it :) I was just chatting with Jakob from Sailing Blue Bird. He pointed out that water enters into his chain locker through the drain. Take a look at the beginning of his video. Jakob also pointed out that this could be minimised by using a small clam-shell vent cover, facing away from normal water flow, so it purges the locker and deflects water from intrusion. All in all I'm not worried :) Jakobs video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnTReaaJm66UfZI

***** Draining an anchor or chain locker overboard is by far the most common method around these parts. Water will enter the chain locker no matter what I do thru the hole in the deck. Having the chain locker drain overboard and thereby keeping water from getting 'inside' the boat seems like a big plus to me. Also keeping the dirt from the chain out of the bilge seems like a good thing. Both for keeping it clean and the longevity of the bilge pump. :)

I still don't get why you're not moving the hose to the port side where you showed, but INSIDE the chain locker instead of in the cabin space. Also, you don't want to have the floor of the anchor locker level, you'll want it at an angle of about 10-15 degrees, with the drain at the lowest point. This is so that the locker can drain without leaving a puddle for your chain to rust in. It will also help if/when you upgrade to a windlass, which will cause the chain to stack up in a pile in one spot until it jams at the top. The angled floor helps prevent this by causing the stack to fall over before reaching the top.
@SailLife
@SailLife 9 жыл бұрын
Ingmar Is your suggestion to move the fill cap and then use some sort of coupling in the bottom of the chain locker to connect the hose to the water tank? :) Your point is valid and I agree. I'll need to come up with some sort of way to avoid having standing water in the bottom of the chain locker. Unlike my other videos, this one wasn't uploaded right after shooting it. That means I've already cut the pieces of plywood I need and coated them with epoxy (as you'll see in part 3). When I'm back aboard the boat I'll take a look and see what kind of solution I can come up with :)
@Ingmar
@Ingmar 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well, actually I just meant moving the fill cap and then covering the hose just like you were planning to do where it is now, but in its new location, so it's got a separate "tunnel" in the corner of the anchor locker. But using a coupling might be an even better idea due to leaving it more accessible. Good luck with your projects, it's been interesting following them.

Kamau Iandiataiyero Hi Kamau :) Long time no 'see'. I hope you're doing well and that your project is going according to plan :) Around these parts, it's very common to drain an anchor or chain locker overboard. In fact, I've never (in person) seen it done in any other way :) To be 100% honest before seeing the comments on part 1 of this series I didn't know some boats drain their drain to the bilge. I think draining overboard has some advantages. 1) it's the shortest possible distance 2) no dirt from the chain inside the bilge 3) less dirt and work for the bilge pump. Would you prefer to have the chain locker drain into the bilge? :)
@IandiBoats
@IandiBoats 9 жыл бұрын
***** NO! In my design it drains locally, although I do use a sump pump. The forward 10' of my boat is considered the first compartment. There is a 1.5" (36mm) collision bulkhead closing off the bow from the 2nd compartment (the forward cabin). If there is ever a collision the bow could fill with water and the rest of the boat would stay intact; as long as the structural damage is limited to the first 10' :-) I only mentioned it because I know lots of smaller boats (under 32') seem to drain everything to the bilge.

cumnshow The short answer is cost :) It's much more cost-efficient to use fiberglass and plywood (vs solid fiberglass). It takes a lot of layers of fiberglass to build up the same rigidity as you get by using only one or two layers of fiberglass on top of plywood.

ranking is important? I am not sure how this youtube ranking works and what for but will do some research on it to find out!!! No reply needed
@SailLife
@SailLife 9 жыл бұрын
David Cannamela A reply might not be needed, but you're gonna get one anyways ;) The ranking of the videos determines not only how they will be displayed in a search result but also if they will appear in the suggestions KZbin provides after you're done watching a video. A better rating on your videos means more views, more subscribers and in turn more revenue from AdSense. None of this is of course truly important (it's not why I started uploading videos) but seeing my channel grow is nice. It's silly I know :) The good thing about KZbin is the community and the connections to people all over the world. All of the people I'll be visiting this summer on my trip to the US are people I've come in contact with through KZbin. Gaining friends (like-minded sailors) is why I started uploading videos and why I'll continue to do so :)

David Cannamela Sharing a video on Facebook helps a lot! Thanks! :) It'll be very interesting to see what boat you two end up with :) Though choice for sure! So many things to take into consideration. I'm putting together a list of boats I'd consider upgrading to once I've been living aboard for a while. Basically, I'm looking primarily for well proven offshore cruising boats that will provide standing headroom and are available in Europe. Going through all the options out there is very time-consuming!
