Only seeing Athena once a week I had just come to take it for granted that the port lights were glassed over. As soon as you said you said how you had been going crazy to open them up it suddenly occurred to me "oh, of course!" When you cut them out It made such a difference it was like seeing an actual boat again for the first time in a while, and she was beautiful.

Love the video! For temporarily adhering two things together, nothing beats a hot glue gun. I actually use it for cabinets as well. The glue joint is fully reversible with a hair blow dryer & the bond is surprisingly strong when left cold. Fast, easy, and very simple to remove the glue residue when you separate the glue joint. (cheap also) They even have cordless versions if you don't feel like messing with a cord.

As always great video and pleasant to watch. You coming right along doing great. If I may, just to explain my comments on prior videos, With the step down on the inside, you now have 3 90 degree corners to finish. Two outside rights and one inside right. A lot of work. If you had extended the deck to the side of the boat you would only have one outside 90 degree to work. The outside right is easy. That inside right is a PIA. To work a 90 degree corner, fare it square with a perfect square 90 edge. After its level on top and even on the side then you sand off the square edge. All your corners will be perfectly smooth and straight. Very easy. Next, the tool you use to level the fairing compound needs to be a little flexible. In auto body they have spreaders with 3 steel rods in them to control the stiffness of the spreader. use all three for very stiff. use one rod for more conforming around a curve. The spreader should conform to the deck some, but still spread the faring compound conforming to the surface. For final faring on autos glazing compound is used. It covers the bubbles and spreads out thinly, easily and has better shape sanding characteristics. Many of the fairing compounds will absorb water. Very bad. I would paint the deck with high build epoxy primer paint to seal it. The high build epoxy auto paint will seal the fairing compound and help you to see wavy surfaces. You can fair again if needed. An old body trick is painting a surface with primer to show up any imperfections. When you sand, sand in a X pattern. Back and forth for one leg. Then change directions. Back and forth on the other leg.

I am 51 now, when I was 16, I got a job at an auto body shop. Yup, as a Sander. One day, my first week or so there, I was sent to sand the bed of a pickup truck. They found me sleeping in the bed, hugging the sander and my head resting on the roll of sandpaper like it was a pillow. They started calling me Turtle after that. When I was about 20, they started telling people, we think he is almost a master sander, and they started calling me Tortuga... which is Spanish... for Turtle.

You might get some good tips from watching some auto body repair. They do block sanding in diagonal crosses with a guide coat of color to see where the high and low spots are. I use this technique on cars myself and it is easy to get the hang of. It leaves the panels perfectly flat and since you're doing the cabin in a semi gloss that's exactly what you want. Check it out.

I like your solution to the radius jig. I was going to mention making something like that in my long winded explanation but decided not to because of the rough surface it leaves. Either way, there is always a bit of sanding and re-dragging of the template until smooth. Epoxy is not quite like modeling clay. However, you are on your way! Nice work so far.

Hey Mads. When sanding down the fairing compound (bondo), try to sand in a criss cross pattern. Do the section one way and mirror it the other (Hard to describe). I work a lot with bondo and bodyfillers on cars and when you do circular sandingmotions you tend to flatten it out instead of following the radius. Still impressive work you do!!

Now i sound like a know it all... I have not worked a lot with thickened epoxy from West systems, but after stirring up a mix take 30 seconds to flatten the compound on a board with a spatula. that way you squeeze out the small air bubbles that form. That will remove some of the pinholes and will leave a smoother surface.

Might I recommend a channel with a lot of fairing and painting to perfection ideas.... the followtheboat channel. He had his boat Esper in Thailand and did weekly updates with the work and the painting and fairing processes looked like they would achieve perfection. if you do any more heavy applications of filler, it might be worth waiting around for it to set-up just a bit. when it goes rubbery, you can use "cheese grater"-like tools to quickly sculpt your surface. With a little practice you can rough-in a large surface with a lot less sanding.

Should've covered the edge jig in packing tape for smoothness. Also, a section of it should've led down to the flat one which should be about 3 cm max. Tho, frankly, the best kind is the edge kind. You can't beat that stuff.

Deck is comming out great....Hahaha yeah, somtimes the eyes need a little satifaction. I can understand Your temptation with the windows. But don´t You think this time that was a little too enthusiastic. I understand the boat goes outside and now You have to close the holes. Of course the best would be installing the windows but I think there are a lot more things that go before that. The center of the fiberglass that covered up the openings for the portlights wasn't wetted out so it wouldn't have been waterproof :) I'd much rather just tape up the portlights in case I don't manage to finish painting the deck in time :)

Hi Mads Nice to see the progress on the boat. I just bought my own boat today, a Beneteau First 27, a 27 foot sailboat. Im gonna be moving back to my hometown Skive onto my new boat in about two and a half months, and my plan is to do my own refitting of my new boat. I have seen almost all your refitting videoes, but i was wondering how much you pay every time you have to get your boat moved? I need to get my new boat transported from Rødekro to Skive, and the prices i have found is super expensive. So any good advice would meen a lot to me! Looking forward to have you as a neighbor, and let me know if you could use a pair of extra hands for any help.

Welcome to Skive (in advance). I don't have much experience moving boats by truck. I did have Obelix moved around 20 km on a truck and I think that was around 2000 Kr. When the boat is moved around in the yard that is 1000 Kr. I look forward to meeting you in person :)

You say that you want to paint next weekend, but most paints require 15C or better for application and proper curing. Are you likely to have that ?

The primer I'll be using cures down to 5C and the paint actually cures down to -5 C .., yes negative 5 degrees... that is crazy :) I think the real issue is going to be taking care of the last faring. The weather looks just a tad too cold this week :/

Sail Life how about a wooden raised toe rail. Cheaper than a replacement aluminium one, and aesthetically more pleasing. Plus any excess water on deck would drain straight over the side. Loving the refit. 😎
