This is an assembly video of the Sainsmart 3018 Pro CNC router kit. As of Christmas 2018 the machine now ships with the nicer coulet chuck on, and they switched the 10mm screws to hold the build platform on to 12mm screws.

Some more changes and notes: The step motor to screwed rod coupler now has 2 grub screws fitted on the screw rod end. Took me a few minutes to work out why the rod would not fit! Although the collet is prefitted onto the spindle motor and was secure, the 2 grub screws were not even slightly tightened. Before starting to assemble scribe a line using a square on the side pieces at the 46.5mm line. Having a line also lets you set the vertical on the side peices more easily. If planning to use the laser module as well as the spindle motor leave the wiring of the motor seperate from the Z axis stepper motor. Thanks again, watching your video first made my life a lot easier.

Thanks - I just built mine and this was a great help. Only difference with mine was a few screws weren’t long enough for the table (easy to replace) and mine came with a mini screen / joypad that I guess is easier to move the spindle than the laptop. Amazed everything was square and flat. Works a dream. I’ll replace the plug and clamps tomorrow as they seem inadequate but overall the machine is fine for what I want it for.

Caleb Builds 3D hi - I’ve tried a variety of software packages to generate images, turn into Goode and send to the machine. My next project is to take 3D files I created if my kids heads with an old. Kinect scanner and CNC them with the front part of their faces in 2.5D and a flat back. Maybe too specialised? An easier tutorial would be an approach to adding names into pencils - I tried holding down pencils with tape but plan to make a jig for this so I can automate the process a little. I made a few last night and it was easy but a fiddly trial and error at the start.

Great video! I purchased the 3018 pro ( fairly recent upgraded version , I presume) As far as the "Sainsmart" branding, It may as well be called the 'ZackGalifanakkis' or the 'Lickamaforbis' as that 'branding' is just a different chinese seller in most cases.. sometimes the seller/factory actually makes upgrades / changes to the design .. The one I just assembled varies a bit from your machine by design .. The bed plate was chopped as a parallelogram ( off by 1/8th inch) ... the frame pieces were all the proper lengths and therefore the frame is squared up nicely ... I have marked the bed plate to square and centered it properly to the frame but I may just remove it and either chop it square with a metal blade on my chop-saw OR just grind it .. I suppose if the frame is square I can make it mill itself LOL! ie: mill the sides of the bed plate to square! I'll post a video once it's all done and we'll see how it performs . Cheers!
@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 5 жыл бұрын
Sainsmart tends to make upgrades to their machines, and has good customer service, most Chinese companies do not do that. You can find some that do, but you do have a point. Luckily the plate doesn't need to be that square, however that is a good bit of a skew. You will most likely have issues machining the plate square, mainly because the router wont go that deep unless you have a longer than usual bit, which is not good for machining aluminum

I got the pro version and for some reason they sent the non-pro manual so I stumbled on this to see which parts go where. One thing you should always do when building anything like this, put together the entire gantry, make sure the axis dont bind or feel tight, then fit the leadscrews and stepper motors. Testing a gantry by turning a leadscrew is kinda like hitting it with a hammer, theres alot of torque even with just your fingers and you wont feel it if its tight. Second thing, put the leadscrew into the coupling before the stepper, the stepper will happily slide all the way in and into the space for the leadscrew but not the other way around.
@jamesknox9656
@jamesknox9656 3 жыл бұрын
I got mine just a couple of days ago, and lots of issues - missing parts, full of crud, etc. Leadscrew won't go through the nut seat (either ones). Working on that. But my big issue (and question) is that with everything snugged down, I can BARELY turn the lead screw (moving the platter fore and aft) by hand. Pretty much worn the skin off. Frame is trued square. I can't find the problem. Individual parts seem to work, as long as I don't tighten anything down. Any suggestions?

Hello friend, your video helped me a lot a couple of weeks ago to build my cnc, but I have a query. I have been using my cnc in a perfect way and made several engraves succesfully, but 3 days ago, the cnc began to make the designs much less sharp. I investigate and investigate and do not achieve what happened. Tighten all the screws, I checked the programming, the plate but nothing ... At that time I lubricated it with DW-40, so when that happened I even lubricated it much more so that it could fix it but nothing ... Until today I noticed that one of the bearings was locked ... So I changed it and ready, now works perfectly. But that helped me to investigate and realize that the DW40 damaged the bearings, since it penetrates and dries them. My question is, if I can not use DW40, what oil or lubricant do you recommend for the cnc? and what other maintenance or cleaning do you recommend so that the cnc is always in optimal conditions? Also to consult you about the step-motors, after 1 hour working they get very hot, they boil, so I do not know if that is normal... I do not know if the temperature of where I live is part of the quasante, I live in Honduras and it is normally at 95F. .. I put a fan to it but it always gets hot, I wanted to know if your step-motors also get hot after some hours working, and also what you think about it? Thank you very much for your assistance and I encourage you to continue with your very helpful videos!
@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad my video was able to help you! Thank you for telling me about WD-40 ruining the bearings, I didn't know it would do that. I would recommend using a white lithium grease, it goes on wet and then dries and stays lubricated. It also prevents dust from getting stuck on the rails and in the bearings. WD does sell some. As for other maintenance, make sure everything everything is tight and square, also make sure to use a thread lock on the screws that are on the threaded rod couplings. I would definitely advise using some form cooling, fans work good, that's what I use and I am in Florida, which is also hot
@gerardocastillo8463
@gerardocastillo8463 5 жыл бұрын
@@calebbuilds3d223 Thank You very much for your answer! perfect I will start using white lithium grease, thread lock, and more fans! But, I just noticed that I jchanged the bearings that I mentioned to you, they were the ones in the frames, but it did not work as I thought I would .. it's still making the design very, very bad ... I do not know what it could be, do you have any ideas? Now I was going to check the lower bearings, the ones in the bed, but I noticed that they are other type, they are linear, and I do not know how to check if they are good or not, since those of the frame with the finger were easy to test .. These others ones using the rod I tryed to test them, and felt a little roush one ones more than others ... I do not know if the DW-40 have ruined them too or not .. it is difficult to know if they are good, you know how to test them? or do you have any other idea why the designs are coming out like this? Caleb, I need an easy to operate CNC to cut ABS plastic parts. They are 1/8" thick x .700" wide x 5" long cut from ABS plastic sheet of the correct size to mount on the CNC with (I would guess) 1/2" plywood underneath to allow cutting completely through the plastic. The part has two .060" deep grooves cut across the .700" dimension to allow the end user to break off 1 or 2 of the tabs to vary the length of the piece . There are only simple straight cuts but I would also like to be able to drill a single pilot for tapping a #4-40 threaded hole. I would guess this machine could drill the hole (with a tool change) but could not tap the hole as the spindle speed would be excessive. Am I correct? Can I input a simple image of the part into any available software I could install on the CNC or will I have to program it in? Thanks.
@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 5 жыл бұрын
This machine can definitely do what you are asking for. However a lot of the ease you are looking for comes from software side, which I would recommend using easel by inventables, which I did make a video on. The only thing with that software is that you need to multiply the material thickness and cut depth by 2.54 in the software. In the comments on that video a guy did have an alternative way that makes it where you don't have to do that every time, it might have been on my first engraving video though. You can definitely drill a hole with this, but you are right and tapping will not work, I would recommend using a 1/8in upcut bit for abs, or small bit diameter if needed, but that's my go to for plastic. Easel will allow you to input an image and cut it, along with model and control your machine all from your browser. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 4 жыл бұрын
The Chuck is annoying. You can get by with just a vice, which is what I did at first. However, that method isn't the best and usually doesn't go on completely straight. Heating it up is definitely your best bet. A heat gun will not be nearly enough heat, it will need to be in an open flame from a torch or some other fire. It shouldn't take too long to get to the correct temperature either, probably only a minute or 2 depending on your heat source. If you have a propane torch that will work great otherwise you can potentially stick it on something and slide it into the flame of your grill for a bit, or just make a fire and cook it there. I'm sorry for the late response, I hope this answers your question.

Good video helped a lot. The only thing I’m confused about is.. did you show the ring screws being used when you did the bottom sliding those pieces into the metal plate. You show you were using the small screws to do it and the long ones when you did your frame. But then that was the one part of your video that you fast forwarded , when you were also struggling to slide the pieces in to the metal plate ..But I tried the small ones and it was impossible. So I used the long ones. And the long ones work fine So did you end up changing your screws around ?? Your video was very helpful anyways thanks so much. More helpful tben the one the company sends in the instructions. They should pay you to make this video. The only suggestion I have is .. the top part of the video is cut off and a few times I needed to see what you were doing up there lol. That and to explain more clearly which screed you were using in the second part (when you need the bolts on the under rods to attach to the metal base frame thing ) lol. Awesome job tho very very helpful 😀thanks for taking the time to make those video. Idk how you did this without the instructions unless you’ve done it a million times. I’m sure I’m probably not even going to no how to use the machine after tbid. You would think for about four hundred dollars I just paid for tbid machine it should come together omg what a pain. At least some of it I mean come on now gimme a break. They can’t even send it with a few pieces together for all that money there getting four hundred bucks for a few pieces of metal and bags of bolts and screws and a laser what the heck lol

I have heard a good bit of that from people who bought some cheaper ones on AliExpress or even Amazon. If you bought it from Amazon you might be able to work out a return or refund. Personally I go for the Sainsmart ones, but even then those are not perfect. Starting at a low price point is definitely dangerous when it comes to 3d printers or CNC machines. You might be able to just get a new $15-30 control board that is higher quality and get your machine running reliabily, depends on the quality of the other parts from whoever you bought it from

@soundmapper
@soundmapper 4 жыл бұрын
High End Vape LLC either the collar is stripped, or the set screw is junk. Best option for the set screw is buy better screws locally, or in a pinch, a #8 torx driver fits better than a hex key.
@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 4 жыл бұрын
Use some super glue, or make a dent in the threaded rod where you want the nut to rest. A flat surface on a flat surface is much better than a flat one on a round one. Definitely make sure the nut won't back out when you get it right by using some super glue or thread lock. Maybe file a flat spot, like how the stepper has it.

I had to quit watching this video. Its too much of a pain to watch you put every single nut on one at a time and then have to fast forward through it. Conveniently, you fast forward through installation of the bed, but you cant seem to do that for any other of the tedious tasks involved. Secondly It's not 165.5 mm for the gantry arms. That's 6.5 inches, that would be a massive gap. The actual gap in the manual is 46.5 mm which is 1.83 inches.
