Thanks for your excellent video. I second your continued reference to how sharp these bits are. On my first use, I mistakenly treated the bit similarly to a drill bit in a drill press. While tightening one of the hold down clamps, I slipped and cut an artery in my finger, making a bloody mess on the machine and work piece. The machine was stationary at the time, but it is still important to remember safety at all times when using any kind of power tool.

I'm glad you liked it! For power tools and stuff like this, always treat it like it is hot or on, because they are dangerous even when they are off. Very fun machines and not overly dangerous, if you take the proper saftey precautions

I found on mine the linear x axis bearings got quite sticky. Might be because of the type of grease that was on them. I found it very helpful to put a few drops of better bearing oil on them. Stopped the squeaking and grabbing. Thanks for the videos.

If you setup in Easel, add a 2nd milling bit, eg 1/16 straight and accept the offer of a roughing cut on 1/16 & fine cut with 30° v bit, then the cut will take considerably less time. You can export both cut paths to be used in Candle or UGS
@FlyByPC
@FlyByPC 3 жыл бұрын
Nice overview. The initial cut is shallow because the gcode file defines zero Z as the level of the *bottom* of the cut. So when you set Z= board height, it brought the bit down to the board but didn't cut it. A workaround would be to set your origin as far below zero as the depth of cut should be, offsetting X and Y too so that you can start off the build plate and not crash into it. The sample file really should have Z=0 at the top of the part, not the bottom.

Which do you prefer UGS or Candle? I liked UGS but the preview on Candle is superior, imo. One thing Candle needs is the plugin/modules that UGS has because there is one that is invaluable (makes it where UGS is the go to) and that is the X/Y/Z probe plugin/module.

You could place a small desk top fan to the side to blow the dust away from the part being machined and keep dust from building up on the machine.
@calebbuilds3d223
@calebbuilds3d223 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe a bit more than a small one, but you definitely could! Or you could put a fan on the bit itself, and you can also connect a vacuum up to the machine and then have it suck around the bit. The great thing about these machines is all of the upgrades you can do!

Ive been debating on getting this machine for a while but most vids are how to put them together and the basic carve test. First time Ive seen someone attempt the relief logo. @@freew67 I am working on doing some legit 3d carving that is front and back, so I have some ball nose bits coming in for that, hopefully they are better, I do admit that I cheaped out and didn't buy a more expensive set. The link to that group is in the description. If you're still milling PCBs with your 3018 router, I HIGHLY recommend that instead of Candle you use a GRBL control program with autolevel, like for example OpenCNCPilot. It's an open source program that autolevels your routing bit to the copper PCB and makes 100 times better results than anything else I've tried. Hope I'm not getting here late. Good luck mate!

If your board got fried you need to contact Sainsmart customer support or whatever company you got it from. Sainsmart should replace it pretty quickly, and they tend to have fast shipping, especially compared to the month long wait most companies give you. I have just ordered one of these little machines just to see what it can do. I hope it's faster than what you are demonstrating? how much experience do you have with CNC? and G code ? from what i am seeing, it looks to be running G code. Therefore the machine should use cutter compensation/or auto left and right for the tool you are using. when a program pops up, are you able to manually edit that program? You can't make something that is supposed be say, 6 inches wide using a tool like you are using and get that exact size, you need to compensate for the tool you are using to get what you want and that's why it is taking you forever.

You might want to do aluminum instead, silver is super hard to machine because of how soft and gummy it is, it will clog your bits in no time, and gold is even worse, I think it would be hard to find something under $2k that isn't a custom machine that can do it. If you want to put people's names on silver using this machine, get the laser and then put blue tape over the silver, laser the name, and then etch the name out. It's not hard or expensive, just Google laser engraving metal and some videos should pop up. You could also just electroplate aluminum for a true silver outside, granted polishing the aluminum to look like silver would work too

@@tripleh4884 Plaster is pretty common for aluminum so you shouldn't have any problems. But yeah it's one time use. You literally break the mold to get your part out. The result is a high finish but you typically get one use out of the mold. I only mention this because milling graphite sounds like a powdery nightmare. Especially on this tiny mill. My suggestion is to mill out the design embossed (maybe wax for loss casting), cast in plaster, make a master part from the plaster, and then proceede to use greensand molding for replication and manufacturing.

@@lyesakkouche8285 You have to find or make your own 3D files. The problem with the 2D is that you can't tell whether it's working -- they're meant for lasers to burn in and not for endmill cutting. As for trying to zero, put a piece of paper over the point you want to act as zero, and manually jog the mill to that point. Jogging downward, stop just as it touches the paper, and then back up one step. There should be just enough gap for the paper to slide, and that's 1/10 mm tolerance.

It also doesn't help you are using plywood which is made up of sheets of thin wood, you need to try it on mdf or on solid hardwood and see what it can produce.... or hard plastic, or pretty much any decent fine grained wood, ply will just splinter nearly every time unless you ramp up the speed and have a very fast spindle and fine quality bit, use the air assist all the time to keep it cool and a suction to keep the workspace clean. overall its a nice little machine although i feel the pro model is better and sturdier, I have changed on mine the spindle for a 24k model and the base plate for a cast one which means its flat! you only need to be.5 of a mm out on the base for your design not to work, the tolerances on this machine are in that range not 0.01 so pop in a cast bed for about 60 us or euros and the new spindle for about 90 us and it will be a different machine, then use Easel to design if not already doing so. the other video of all the bits i think that you should re do this when you have time and as you show each bit show what each bit can do , that's the only way to show off the machine and how to explain what each bit can do, nice well put together video and thank you for producing it, these things take time and people do not recognise this. Your doing a great job. keep it up, if you want to know more on air assist then email me here. Hailea make the pumps and you need a AC0328 minimum, basketball inflator needle, flexi lathe coolant hose 3/8 silicone tubing and connect up and blow the air down the tube using the flex to direct it on to the head of the bit, using a larger flexi 1/2 or 3/4 connected to a suction device with a flat head on the flexi you can suck away all the crap and keep it nice and clean, I use a water filter on mine to keep down the dust. works brilliantly. Main thing always is speed , sharp tools and a flat bed and do not try and take off to much in each pass. Its only a 250 us router if that. anyway, having said all that, keep them coming... always interesting to watch. thanks ps add a off line controller to make your life a lot easier..... 22 us.....
