The director and stars of Saint Maud, a psychological horror in which a mysterious nurse becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient, talk about making the film.
Having recently found God, self-effacing young nurse Maud (Morfydd Clark) is untiring in her spiritual devotion. Landing a job as full-time private carer, she arrives at the plush home of Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), a hedonistic dancer left frail from a chronic illness. While they could not be more different - Amanda’s taste for the extravagant being the antithesis of Maud’s pious values - the mismatched pair are intrigued by each other, slowly building a brittle bond of co-dependency. But when a chance encounter with a former colleague throws up hints of a dark past, it becomes clear there is more to sweet Maud than meets the eye. As Amanda’s self-indulgent behaviour escalates, tensions between the couple steadily grow, leaving Maud convinced that she has been sent to serve a higher purpose. Rose Glass’ gothic-tinged psychological drama is a wickedly playful piece of work, by turns insidiously creepy, darkly humorous and heartbreakingly sad. The two leads crackle with palpable chemistry, with Jennifer Ehle’s beautifully nuanced performance proving the perfect complement to Morfydd Clark’s star-making turn as the unsaintly Maud. Consistently upending expectations, this thrilling one-of-a-kind is an almost religious experience.

This was one of the best films I've seen in years. It fucking _blows my mind_ how good this was, given it's a directorial debut. Along with Ari Aster, Robert Eggers and Jennifer Kent, Rose Glass will surely be noted in future as one of the great arthouse horror filmmakers of this generation of film. I can't wait to see what Glass does next.

The film is beautiful, terrifying and tragic Could have been cliche trope religious hysteria but this was so well done .. the performances are so pitch perfect it becomes intimate and emotionally driven and therefore we care about the characters and the dichotomy /contrasts that exist and that they each are marching towards death and dealing with the mystery of it and what life's purpose is etc in very different ways And like star-crossed lovers they are tied together and suffering And seeing the conflict that ultimately leads to such a tragic and horrifying ending is just stunning It is a brilliantly unsettling and sad psychological horror film. I applaud Rose and both actresses I won't soon forget this bizarre beautiful gem. PS the actress who plays Amanda reminds me of the great Sigourney Weaver

I loved Saint Maud so much. Stories about religious psychosis are fascinating. A film that comes to mind is Breaking The Waves, another story about an isolated young woman who has an intensely personal relationship with God. In the late 70s we bought a house from a young man. There were two houses on the property and part of the deal was that he could live in the smaller one for a nominal rent for three years. We had been renting the larger house and he had been our landlord. He was a Christian and so was I and we often shared our faith with one another. At some point he became obsessed with the idea that he was a prophet. His vision was that he was to start his own church and my husband along with several of our male friends were to be the elders, his disciples. As a woman I was not included in the hierarchy even though I was more his friend than any of the others. The men did not accept that this guy was a prophet and in fact, they thought he was nuts. As his fantasy became more elaborate he got the notion that he needed to confess his sins. These "sins" consisted primarily of unhealthy sexual fantasies he had entertained about the children in the neighborhood, my two daughters included. He made the rounds confessing these lurid fantasies to neighbors he hardly knew. It turned the neighborhood into quite a turmoil. Another part of his delusion was that as a prophet he didn't have to pay rent anymore. This gave my husband the excuse to start eviction proceedings which took over 4 months to complete. Even after he was gone he would occasionally call me on the phone or even come by the house when he knew no one else wouldn't be home.

Rose Glass is so talented! This was a really incredible debut. Straight up 10/10 from me. I do think it’s a shame she’s making the concept of the film so clear cut in these interviews, when it would be much more appropriate, given the themes, and the ending, to allow her viewers to interpret her work, rather than spelling it all out. I refer to the idea that Maud “has it all in her head”... people could’ve been interpreted that differently.

Brilliant Film 9.5 /10. The only film it really truly has clear parallels with is Taxi Driver. The differences? The main character is female & the loneliness takes a highly religious paranormal anxiety ridden twist. The score is one of dark impending..... Well you'l sense, see & hear it. I'm trying to think of a better English made film (& I've seen many) & I currently can't. Also see It at night, lights off & sound up for the full on Saint Maud Experience. 🎬 👿 💃❤️🌟 😁
