St. Raymond of Peñafort, Confessor
Biography of St. Raymond (Sant Ramon de Penyafort)
St. Raymond joined the Dominican order just 8 months after St. Dominic had died in the year 1222. He worked tirelessly against the spread of the Albigensian heresy, to protect the simple souls of sheep from the heretical wolves. He was called to Rome by Pope Gregory the 9th to be his confessor. Later, when he discovered the adultery of King James of Aragon, the king kept St. Raymond captive on the island. Trusting in Divine Providence, Raymond spread his cloak on the water, stood on it, and sailed across the sea to Barcelona. Seeing this miracle, the king repented and led a chaste life.
Collect Prayer
O God, Who didst elect blessed Raymond to be an eminent minister of the sacrament of penance, and didst miraculously guide him through the waves of the sea, grant that by his intercession, we may bring forth worthy fruits of penance, and reach the haven of eternal life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
Faith of our Fathers! Holy Faith! We will be true to thee till death.
