By the way... Jeanne Marie Darré 1905 - 1999, French. At 21yrs old, she played all Saint Saens 5 piano concertos in a concert. Amazing !!
@DavidLehrman-wr9hs3 ай бұрын
Jean Marie Darre has fascinated me for sixty years. I listened to her recordings as a young music student, and this concerto has a special place in my heart. In 1964 I was a student at Hunter College. Our conductor, Clayton Westerman led our school orchestra in the second piano concerto (fist offered here). The magnificent jagged dotted rhythms in the opening movement, the Bach to Offenbach opening arpeggi, the sheer vivacity of that last movement are re-awakened with this hearing. Darre was the one to whom I listened at the time. Small wonder, Liszt himself touted this as among his favorite concerti, as did so many others. (Arthur Rubenstein, Benno Moisewitch, et al.) Apparently the first reviews thought the mood shifts jarring. The first and last movements came in for their fair share of critique. But I am a fan, adoring every note. Maybe love is blind-and a bit deaf-I'll take the rap. Thanks so much for posting, Classical Music/Reference Recording!

What a splendour of sounds! Saint-Saëns is surely no boring composer, he understood well how to use the various timbres to engage the listener. There is no one style in which he wrote; relishing in the idyllic just as well as driving the orchestra with resolute ferocity.
@alecwilliams7111 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for presenting all of Saint-Saens' piano concertos together. I don't think that numbers one and three are as often played as they should be. Ms. Darre's playing is exceptional, particularly in phrasing and dynamics. Certainly her recordings are an achievement. The re-mastering of the old analog sound is of note, too. One wouldn't think that these recordings date from the 1950's. Thanks for adding something to our musical knowledge.

Another remarkable recording in this series, beautifully remastered. Jeanne-Marie Darré was one of the greatest pianists of her generation, and her performances of the Saint-Saëns piano concertos were unsurpassed in her lifetime (probably not ever since). This is another luminous gem. It is truly a Century's recording by a legendary pianist with repertoire she made her own. Thank you for sharing this with us.

My favourite performance has been since a long time with Aldo Ciccolini. I never heard Jeanne Marie Darré. She is really at the top in the 5 présent ones. Cleverness, sensibility in a music full of beauty beside high technical sides from Saint Saëns. Even in the third concerto. The orchestra is fine for every mvt. So my second reference giving the wish to hear the concertos. A great lady.

The music produced by Saint-Saëns is stunning, for the emotional sequence that provokes us. Now moments of dazzling delicacy with others of great musical intensity, but linked with a sublime art. These masterpieces provoke us completely antagonistic emotional states, but with an astonishing beauty. The pianist is the first time I have heard her, but I am amazed at her sensibility, technique and magnificent sound she takes for the piano. Bravissimo.The orchestra and its direction are magnificent. Thanks for these remarkable set of recording.

There's definitely such a thing as too much classical music in one sitting, at least for me, and I might have overdosed today, but this guys music is either absolutely-to-die-for-outstanding in places, only to be followed by insane psycho-loud-obnoxious let's-just-get-through-this-piece annoyance...very much like Rachmaninoff, again imho. It's sort of 30-70 as in 30% miraculously awesome to 70% I'm-leaving-the -room-now to go find a glass of wine to calm me down...and btw., Opera to me is more of a 20-80...but let's not even go there...Could it be this equates to life in general...30% awesome and 70% barely tolerable...hmmmm; food for thought.
