Only thing better than playing this organ is to have the master, Daniel Roth, be the registrant, anticipating and opening/closing stops precisely when you need them to be! I hate he’s retired now, but he earned it!

Of all the amazing things about this (of which there are many) it's that the organ doesn't run out of wind--at all--during the biggest, loudest parts. I keep waiting for the wind to sag, hoping it won't, and being so pleased that the wind can keep up with the demands. Maybe I'm just used to organs where the wind supply is barely adequate. The St. Sulpice organ is so strong. So great.

The sight of Daniel Roth sitting right beside him, pulling stops and turning pages without a murmur, is awesome! +Roberr Risk Generally, Max Reger's music modulates quickly and continually which distresses me greatly. I can handle this opus because: (1) the cantus firmus in the pedal provides tonal stability, (2) its minor key and slow 3/4 rhythm are reminiscent of Bach's great Passacaglia in C minor, and (3) this performer could probably make any piece of music sound inspired. What an unusual trinity of Reger, Roth and Latry flanked by two registration cherubs.

It's an entertainment in itself - turn down the volume and watch the faces of Daniel Roth and his fellow registration operatives as they negotiate the minefield of orchestral colours prescribed, no doubt, by Olivier Latry. Sometimes the expressions suggest sheer horror and even panic. It must be absolutely nerve wracking for these unsung heroes; they have my admiration and respect. It's a good job St. Sulpice is able to afford 'assistants' (perhaps they're volunteers?) otherwise it might eventually lead to having thumb pistons and other aids installed. (unthinkable!) Life would then become a sad and lonely experience for the solitary player.
