Stilwater is one of the greatest maps ever created. There’s so much variety in districts, enterable buildings and unique architecture with a beautiful colour palette.

The feature that really stands out in SR2 is the interactivity of the npcs - there were npcs reading books, skating, etc. Steelport in contrast feels the same in every district and is much less interactive.

They'd comment on your clothing, they'd respond to taunts/complements, they had unique lines if they were drunk driving, they'd say things about blown up vehicles/dead bodies or if the player drinks beer/smokes weed. They'd even comment on major story events like Carlos dying or a rival gang boss being killed.

My favorite part of Stilwater is it did a really good job of having a city that felt like it had history. Sunnyvalle garden despite never getting a dedicated mission to it is arguably the most important district of Stilwater, it a part of town with a lot of important history, and a part me like how they never give it a big mission especially in the first game. Yes it's important to the structure of Stilwater throughout several decades due to the important influencers that rose from that part of the town, but at the end of the day you can still tell it's an undesirable part of town, and the fact King never looked back or tried to build it up not only tells you a lot about King, but also that these important landmarks don't really matter to anyone if it can't be used for power and money. The Saints row redevelopment plan hints at this further, where no one wants to prop up these poor areas until it can be used as a symbol of power against the saints. It really did a great job of making you feel like you're in a city and not just a sandbox for your carnage.

When you compare Stilwater with Steelport you can really notice just how oppressive and soulless Steelport is. It feels like it's just a one giant factory, its skies are polluted, its greenery feels fake. Hell, it doesn't have a University for fuck's sake. What I'm trying to say is that Stilwater is one of the most diverse maps ever in gaming. You never feel like every district is the same and there's always something new to find. Hell, I've been playing SR2 for 6 years and only last week I've found out that the strip club and the bar from cutscenes are visitable by the player.

Here’s my head canon of the history of Stilwater. Founded in the 1800s, Stilwater was a major port city in the island state of socatoa. Alongside its sister city by the western side of the island: Steelport. Where Stilwater was founded on some shore that won’t get massive marine trade, Steelport had it better when it industrialized and actually had inner access to its neighboring coastal cities, it had massive access to trade

Maybe it’s more north of Stilwater. Maybe both cities are set in the same state and yet Stilwater was warmer and had a dominant population and governance. And thus stood out as the most playable city. Contrasting to Steelport which had an industry focused economy and that itself destroyed the city on the long run. Devolving into a ghetto esque city. As well as expanded the size with building identical buildings and those identical copy and paste buildings only made it look uninteresting and people would move to Stilwater which has an interesting character of a city. Steelport would be more colder than Stilwater which had some heatwave and set south of Steelport, and also the glass buildings was because there was some gentrification in only the central area of Steelport. And certain parts of the city as well.

Stilwater is loosley based on both Chicago and Detroit because 1. Chicago has both an L train system and a chinatown, 2. houses look a bit like the one in the suburbs of Chicago and Detroit in the 1st one, some of them were boarded up (been a while since I played SR1) until 2 when it was all fixed and 3, the downtown area may similar to Detroit and the skyscraper may look a bit like Detroit as well.

It's too early to make any solid judgment, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. @@MXOY99 this is an insignificant bit compared to the rest of the game, but when Flippy said that the Bear APC and the Challenger tank will be coming back, I changed my stance from "Absolute Hate" to "Just Very Pissed Off". I liked those vehicles a lot, and Volition confirmed that VTOLs will return (just please, if you're bringing back the F-69, change the laser for a regular autocannon, plz), and I think that I saw a modern version of the Tornado attack helicopter in the gameplay snippet. Those Panteros Dodge Challenger-looking cars were also pretty rad. Vehicle-wise, I love it. The characters, well, I'm pissed beyond comprehension, I wish Gat would "skullfuck" the protag, and well, she doesn't have the hep.

From what it seems from the original version they used the original saints row 1 map in saints row 2. Cool just to see volition reused there early assets. Just goes to show that volition was genius at that time unlike now. Helmers trailer would have made more sense in sr2 since they brought back the trailer park instead of helmers being in the downtown district.
