"I pay rent, I need to eat, and I need coffee." My guy Sajam
@sneeze41004 жыл бұрын
This is a correct Sajam, this Sajam speaks facts. I file all of my immediate families taxes, my brother is employed and my father is a small-business owner. I do my brothers taxes and it's like "oh the company already has all his income in the system, oh he doesn't have to pay anything, oh i guess I'm done"... Then comes the boss stage, self-employed small business tax for my father. Ever quarter I have to sift through a thick ass folder of documents, receipts and bills so that we can pay less money, filing all this shit into a giant ass spreadsheet which is organized with all the other giant ass spreadsheets, then there's the 4 different online accounts I need to access that aren't even mine just to file... Finally when it comes time to pay the full years taxes owed, since he still has personal taxes on top of business, I have to go through a bunch of the shit I already looked at over the year so that we can get a 2 dollar refund. What a time we live in. We do be saving money tho.

Just a little clarification - as an employee of a company that does withholding, you have to guess/estimate how much to have them hold for your taxes, and you have to pay the difference if you had them hold too little, or you get a tax return if you had them hold too little. If I owe 10000 in taxes but my employer only withheld 9000, then I still have to write a 1000 check after filing.

I'm not sure how serious you were being about your investments or lack thereof, but you'll want to look into a Roth IRA, probably max it out (only a few thousand per year, but it grows tax free), and you'll want to look into index funds. If you want to understand index funds, I recommend a somewhat quick read called A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel, or the even quicker read, The Simple Path to Wealth by J L Collins.

I mean, if you aren't comfortable with a managed investment portfolio (bunch of different investments someone else handles for you), then just take out some bonds or (over here in Canada) GIC's. He didnt even mention self employ tax. That is the tax that pays for medicare and social security. Its 15% on top of federal and state income taxes for people filing as self employed. If you have an employer, you are only paying 7.5% and your employer is paying the other 7.5%. Imagine on your pay checks that the medicare and social security withholdings are doubled every check, then add them all up and pay lump sum at the end of the year, and thats self employ tax. Money might as well just be dumped into a giant landfill and set on fire. Not like anyone under 45 is ever going to see those programs.
