Half of it is anticipation. Like Max said, MvC2 is a very assist-heavy game, so you track the enemy character and keep an eye out. If they jump or dash, they'll most likely use an assist too, so you prepare to block or counter. Likewise, when you're coming down from a hyper jump, you use your assist to catch the opponent by surprise. The hardest part is timing for combos, it's going to take some time in training to figure it out. Learning how to play (not win) against certain teams comes with experience.

It was hillarious to watch, but he played really good, too.

Yes Wong from way back in summer 2000 mastered this game. He blocked things that would make ur head scratch. But the best I’ve seen? He was not an infinite guy, no flashy combos etc. Just straight beating using intellect. He is to this day, to me, the best there has ever been at MvC2. Sandford Second. Yipes Third.
