Good one! Just to add, in carnatic tradition, the equivalents from the 72 melakarta system are Ionian = Sankarabharanam, Dorian = Karaharapriya, Phrygian = Thodi, Lydian = Kalyani, Mixolydian = Harikambhoji and Aeolian = NataBhairavi. Locrian has both Madhyamas without a Pancham and termed Hanumasri (Thodi with both Madhyamas).

Salam! Sajjad bhai please let us know something about the exercise we should do to sing those fast fluctuating notes... Like you did while demonstrating a Raag at 3:10 in this video. Or like Shafqat Amanat Ali did in his song "Khairiyan de Naal".. Like when all big singers like you, and many others do it, we Small singers get really impressed by your ability to play with notes from your throat and voice.. Please be great and kind enough, and generous enough to share some exercises with us as well, which may help us grow our mind abilities to understand and produce such Raag or fluctuating notes though our voices.. I have a big question here. In C major (Ionian mode) you have 7 degrees of chords (Cmaj, Dmin, Emin, F, G, Bmin (m7) )and you usually harmonize the song using those. But what if I use for example the Dorian? Does that mean that I must harmonize it with the chords of D minor and not C major? Because if I do the first it will sound like C major, right? I'm confused with that. It can be asked in another way: What is the relationship between the scales and chords in the other 6 modes (non-Ionian)? Nobody teach that when explaining the modes, and same with another scales from non-Western cultures. They explain the scale but not the relationship between the notes and the harmony. I think that the answer to that question is very important.
