Sakura has been in the business for many decades in Japan, and was one of the first to spearhead the use of long fiberous materials in their watercolour markers during the 1980's. Its no wonder that you found the kit so well thought out & properly attired. Their German, or Prussian Blue is really close in hue to Manganese Blue's found in other lines. The Koi sets are very finely ground, even if they aren't nearly as high in quality of pigments. Often the cakes or pans will start to lose moisture over time. A little Gum of Arabic will suffice in returning the flow your hoping find in them. It won't take much to resolve the ill. Great review. I'm certain the Koi line would be overjoyed to hear of your satisfaction. Take care.

Thank you for the information!I'm still getting more used to using actual color names so i was having a hard time describing it! And you're right about their sets just being planned out so well, there must have been years and years spent just making this box just the way it is. I haven't really saw the pans drying out so bad, even on my old set but the surface on some of them do look like they crack when they dry though I don't even notice it at all when I'm working

@@hambot the Koi Collection is by no mean's a beginner set, it is rather an Intermediate grade for enthusiast who demand vivid hues and consistent working qualities. The Prussian Blue has been much altered from past, since Phthalo is a far better tincturally, and doesn't need other inert fillers to keep its permanence and color. Manganese is a modern advent of the middle of the 20th Century being chemically more stable and cheaper to make for the Art Market. The old Prussian Blue often will destabilize over time and separate the binder from the pigment. You explain your craft better than most of my College Art Professor's ever could, so a pardon is hardly required. If we wanted to be novelist, we would paint with the word's leant by other's. With Art, all that is secondary, and expression is composition and color alone. Better in all respects, I would say. Very best wishes.

This the set I got when I learned watercolour from cheap sets and was ready to move on...i've had it for 3 years and I love it so dearly! The colours are so perfectly chosen and I never feel like there's a colour I don't use. They're my only watercolours, and I think I'll just get them again when they run out one day :D

ate, can you make your mixing palette visible while you're painting? i really appreciated the video that you made where you placed the mixing palette inside the frame cause i struggle so much when i try to figure out the color that i need whenever i'm painting. this is a suggestion but it's also okay if you won't do it if you're uncomfortable. i'd still watch your videos cause i love 'em!

Purpley sure! I can do more that way but i can't do all of them the same way because it disrupts the footage and can get distracting sometimes

i had sakura koi as my first watercolour set too! i used to love it until i realized the colour differences of it compared to daniel smith and winsor newton. it might not be a fair comparision because the price difference is huge, but i am truly impressed how your art skills utilized a student grade watercolour set to make such pretty art :)

I absolutely recommend superior watercolor, if it's any help. I found it to be comparable to Van Gogh or other upper end "student" colours. Some people even think that they're rebranded Paul Rubens paints with some filler in.

I find your drawing process very inspiring. But you should be careful not to touch your colors. The pigments are toxic and can be harmful to health.
