Don't worry folks, I do understand that "Kamiyama" is pronounced with a soft "a." Try as I might I find it really hard to work his name into a sentence without getting tongue tied. Heads up too. A lot of folks have asked me on various platforms about still being able to support the channel since I de-activated my patreon 6 months ago. Well, my patreon is active again strictly as a "Support option" for now. Unfortunately this means all the old pledges are active again too. I sent all previous patrons messages on patreon, so please, don't ignore it! If you need to cancel/alter pledges, by all means, please do! I don't want to just spring random charges on you guys, but patreon gives me no way of cancelling your pledges without blocking you and selecting from a list of reasons like "User committed fraud" or "User stole my content."

Considering the social aspects, VN gameplay tends to be the focus of the series as far as I remember from _So Long, My Love_ (which had like one battle per chapter) this sounds roughly par for the course. I'm mildly curious if the ease of combat was related to simply doing a bunch of the social events. As I recall, the previous entry didn't really let you level up through battle, instead it was simply fostering your team relationships that "leveled" characters up. That probably also means that combat is probably just tough to balance in general for the series without making the game absurdly difficult for players skipping lots of events or simply doing poorly in the ones they do. It's a title I'll probably end up checking out later when I can get it for a good price. It was a nice surprise release (and localization) for the series though, and I certainly wouldn't mind if it makes something of a comeback.

Daaamn - chunky, in-depth analysis as always. I still really want to give this a try, just because it looks like a top-tier AAA visual novel/waifu simulator with a bit of easy combat thrown in (sounds like fun to me, tbh). You said the characters are great, with decent backstories and interactions. I'm pretty much sold. Great video!!

Definitely experienced the same issues you did, but I couldn’t help but to enjoy the game overall. Felt like an awesome mix of some of my favorite games (Persona, Yakuza, Trails of Cold Steel) and anime (Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagaan, etc). I found the main and supporting cast endearing enough to cover the sometimes filler content. Not to mention, as you noted, the insane attention to detail in the environments and character models. I thought the pace and balancing of action and social sim portions of the game was done well enough to keep me from getting too bored with either and the episodic nature kept me wanting to see what would happen next. Overall it’s definitely a flawed game. The action sections left a lot to be desired, despite being generally fun and quick enough to make up for this, and there certainly could have been a bit more variation, but the game provided enough unique elements, charm, and flair that it kept me hooked until the end. I also loved the length - didn’t overstay its welcome and was a fun game to finish in a weeks time. Great review!

actually.... yeah, the combat are always like that, even in the days of tactical RPG Sakura Taisen IMHO the early games had some challenge, but its really not hard, not like Front Mission or Final Fantasy Tactics hard, especially if you do your homework right (you did treat your squad girls with enough affection and "maxed out" your main girl) than the game is quite easy, but if you do them bad, and..... its kinda hard, kinda

Personally I think they should have stuck to the tactical turn based combat like in older titles maybe borrowing ideas from Valkyria Chronicles. By doing that they could have the entire team present rather than just a single partner. I get appealing to new audiences but I’d prefer it over lackluster action combat.

Tarks Gauntlet True the thing is they came close to that with the previous title Sakura Wars: So Long My Love(Wii/PS2). Although the games story tended revel in absurd moments especially during the ending. What’s notable is like 2020 they set that game up to appeal to a western audience as it took place in New York City. I still love the music especially the games various main themes they always get me pumped for some reason.

The game was great in my opinion: the story was interesting and bubbly similar to gravity rush. The gameplay was fun and kept it entertaining trying to do the missions with no hit runs made me feel like it was fun little personal challenge. Sure there could have been more combos for diversity but the mech options with the other team members was good. Story wise, it's your typical anime structuring; however, it was interesting and entertaining. Dating sim could have used a little more like going on dates with them or spending more time with them. Regardless the characters were interesting and full of personality which is good. Sure it is a niche type of game; however, I definitely recommend it. 🤷‍♂️ I hope they make a sequel, the game deserves it, and I hope they continue with the battle system it's modern and fun.

Fascinating, the carpet thing was a cool detail. Great review, my favourite part of Berseria was all the bonus dialogue and the theme of the story you mentioned with Sakura was interesting to me, so I think I'll pick it up sometime in a sale. I already spent my money this month on Utawarerumono, lol. I honestly never felt that the game dragged on or was just full of filler, yes some events like the four clover one could have been cut out entirely with nothing lost but i tend to like games that focus more on the story or have alot of social elements thrown in. actually i almost felt like the game was slightly too short (even after doing every optional event) and i wanted more. i dunno i guess i was really drawn into it. Sakura Wars is probably one of my fave jrpgs of all time actually, it was way better than i expected. Also ive recently become obsessed with koi koi through Yakuza and 51 clubhouse games so seeing it in this game was really a treat.

Great review as usual! I am a big fan of the original anime/ova and absolutely loved "So long my Love." When I first saw this announced I just about screamed as they literally never bring Sakura Wars games here (except the previous one mentioned). However when I found out that they changed the combat from my beloved turn-base to a more action style. I died a bit. Why are all my favorite series doing this!!! Turn-base can still be good and popular, look at Persona 5 or Dragon Quest XI!! ...sigh... Anyway it also sucks to see that this one has more filler than ever before, but your review still has me excited. First and foremost this series is about the great main cast and its good to hear that that is still well intact. I'll wait a bit then give it a try. Keep up the awesome in-depth reviews!

I just want to say, I feel vindicated for hearing that the hack and slash gameplay was implemented poorly. Sakura Wars is supposed to be a strategy game, and really, the new Fire Emblem games have usurped Sakura Wars in being a waifu-oriented with a good heap of strategy as well. Even Sakura Wars V was fun, especially with the characters stats for each main chapter's fight being tied to their motivation, something you're supposed to improve as the Team Captain. So for flavor and focusing on the social gameplay, it makes sense. If you don't work on getting everyone equally motivated, some people will get crushed in the fight because their stats are too low. Everything else seems like a solid bit of flavor and character development, even if it's full of mundane events, and it makes me just hope that we'll get another Sakura Wars game with strategy RPG elements again.

I played the 3rd and 4th which is the only one I finished, I enjoyed it without really understanding the story! The moment I heard the combat is going to be real time action and not tactical turn based I was skeptical... Played the demo,I was impressed by most of what was displayed but the combat was really disappointing, very basic and easy, I know it was a very tiny portion to have finla judgement but most reviews confirmed my doubts... At least some basic combat of old Ys games! Still conflicted if I should get this game or not... The SEGA fanboy in me wants it but the gamer me will probably not enjoy the bare bone combat system and now you're saying even out of combat isn't that interesting... Maybe I will get it on a discount! Thanks for the review dude!

Well gonna say it here just to let it be known: the Sakrua Wars 2020 Anime adaptation is a sequel to this game and takes place after the events of the game, so i would highly recommend not watching it before beating the game as you'd more or less not have any development showing how these characters got close to each other. Also since you mentioned it I also looked at the license agreement and I gotta say it's probably one of the most consumer friendly I've ever seen because it essentially says you can show off the entire game (or at least a good amount of it) if you wanted to or even copy the the game onto a disk (probably more for backup purposes) as long as you provide the license agreement...which is amazing considering how stringent Sega/Atlus was with what you could show of/do with Persona 5 (Sakura Wars doesn't even give a stopping point in the story that you're not allowed to show past like P5 did).

I loved SW5 and I was more than hyped for this game and I tried to push it as much as I could to those I thought was interested. But when I plugged this game in and found out it was JPVA only my heart sank because it basically makes it a death nail to getting the game more well known. It also meant that I can't enjoy this game as much as I want. It also doesn't help that the story so far is taking me out of the experience, maybe if it was in EN I'd speak slightly differently but that's hard to say now. I have to much more to say about this game on a personal level but I'll just say great review as always.

@@TarksGauntlet All right. If it hinders you in combat, that's a bit unfortunate. If you only lost character development it would have been fine. Then you could basically roleplay the entire game and pick the events you most felt like doing. Kind of like Persona, but without having to prioritize. But I wonder if maybe you could get away with only developing some characters?

@@pite9 totally. like he said, the game is easy so even if you made all the characters hate you, im sure you could easily get by the combat sections still. I also kinda enjoy the slice of life nature of a lot of the optional events and like he said some help for character development. the different character interactions can be really fun, though I agree the combat could be better. I think the game was made for multiple playthroughs in mind as there are even some optional scenes like a date you can go on with only one of the 5 main characters in a playthrough and a separate ending scene to get for each of the main characters. If anything I felt like the game was a bit short and I hope a sequel is made with the same characters eventually. if you do all the sub events it might occasionally break up the pacing a little bit/ take awhile to get back to the main story, but you can save and quit at any time and I really love the system where often you only have so much time to respond to the characters and choose an option, there are a few times where its not super obvious which option to choose or you might panic and choose the wrong choice since you only have so much time to answer. Also when he was complaining about the bath scenes, most of those cause you to lose points with the main cast, and you can actually skip each one and in fact its almost better to do so for the most part. I get where he is coming from with a lot of his points, mostly in the combat which I hope gets improved if a sequel is made, but personally I enjoyed the game a lot and my favourite chapters were probably the ones that focused on Azami and Anastasia since they in particular had some nice character development and were a lot of fun to play through IMO.

I gotta look into where they're placed still. With my FFVIIR video youtube dropped 13 ads on it (11 of which were mid-rolls.) As much as money would be nice, that's just too much.

Nice review, you solidified my choice to not buy the game which is always helpful in a world with way to many games haha. I think the game look beautiful and may just be the best looking anime games I have ever seen. But everything else is just way to out of my strike zone, I was originally expecting this to be a Tactics RPG like some of the previous ones which I am a sucker for a good Tactics game!. I despise dating sim stuff especially in a RPG setting, because I am of the firm belief that choices in JRPG's destroys the overall story at least on the character side. Its one thing if your main character is just I don't talk or do anything other then exist as a mask for you the player. If they actually have a personality and there is a actual serious story going on these types of games just really make them into asshats. In the end if this was a tactics game I might have forced myself through the stupid dating stuff but since its just a crappy musou game no way in hell haha!

It is a rare case where dating mechanics don't at least slightly diminish the feel of organic character development and group dynamics. It's hard to give players the choice of who to explore more and still end up with all the characters feeling fully fleshed out.

@@TarksGauntlet Yep I agree, I think its fine in games made specifically for it where dating targets/character development characters don't so much interact with each other. But when they do you can see oh these are all just shells of my affections who can not do anything on their own. Side note the new Sakura anime is not that great also. I really enjoyed the old ones but this one is kind of meh. The biggest problem is it fails to land anything that feels meaningful. It is just kind of corny it doesn't land the seriousness of the old ones or the musical charm. Its still worth watching though if you like the setting which I do!

great vid thanks man. I was thinking about buying this game and it seemed weird to me that such good looking jrpg did not had any discussion about it any where. I understand why now, its not a jrpg really. I think i will skip this one, maybe wait for a discount or something.

Just read that. The game was rather successful for a niche property I guess so Sega will be doubling down for a while.
