I've been on a pretty big retro RPGs kick lately! I've finished Earthbound and Link's Awakening DX on NSO for Switch, and I've been replaying Final Fantasy VII (PSone) a lot of the middle parts of the game I haven't seen since I was a kid, and I've been appreciating so much about it in both story and game design. I've also been working through Breath of Fire III, another childhood fave, but mybold disc was so screatched up I couldn't finish the game, but I finally got a working copy a while back, and I started Tales of the Abyss, which has been sitting in my backlog far too long

The PS5 version has a ray tracing option too, which of course looked great, but as you can expect knocked the FPS down considerably so I just settled without it. The baked lighting still looked good, just not AS good.

"The Last Guardian" To this day, I still don't know if I enjoyed it or not. I like the ideas, the atmosphere, and just the wonder of the setting. But actually playing it...yea-no. I haven't gotten so frustrated with a game since, funnily, doing the Hard Mode Time Trials for the PS3 version of "Shadow of the Colossus, the one with burked physics causing Wander to stumble constantly. "Ghostwire Tokyo" I still feel like I want to play this, especially in lieu of Tango Gameworks closing, but I just can't bring myself to. It gives me the exact same vibes as "The Evil Within" did. As silly as it sounds, I have some real scars of insecurity due to how much flak and ridicule I ended up getting for liking that game at the time, it scares me off from even bothering with this one. "No One Lives Under the Lighthouse" I've never played it but I did watch an analysis review of it by Pastra. It definitely seems like an interesting time. Very much a sort of experience you let gradually soak in.

Please stop Falcom ... No don't stop ...yes stop! NO DON'T Hook theses games in my VEINS! ) ( I think I need a Therapy )

I've heard silent hope was quite a surprise hit for some people. Trinity trigger is divisive to say the least. It's a Furyu game I believe, so I kind of expect some questionable design. Still want to try it myself someday though. I like how much it looks like a 3DS game.

Don't know how I feel about this game. I loved it until I made it to the Infernal Castle. I hated every other part until I finished the last 16 level dungeon of the old school house. The game didn't know when to quit and there were waaaay too many boss fights. I just beat it and I am still angry about it because the game lied and said it was the final fight so many times only to throw in more and more boss fights at you. I can't see myself playing the game again because of that. That being said I loved the final ending and it made me cry. It was so emotional.
@TarksGauntlet3 күн бұрын
The final dungeon is definitely way too big. That's an issue I have with so many RPGs but this game took it to a new level. But man the events at the end of that dungeon were insane. Some of my favorite moments in the whole series/franchise there.

This is one game I'll be truly sad if it every completely disappears, and is one reason I believe game preservation must happen. It's only ever been on PS2 and 3DS, not the most accessible things anymore between the game, systems, and play ability comfort. I don't know how well to trust them to remake it anymore either, given things that happened to Symphonia. But I hope it gets another port, especially on PC, and more especially a good port. And with the same voices, don't redo that, it'll ruin the feeling of everything.
@SiliconSlyWolf6 күн бұрын
The biggest complaint I have to agree with is, if you want to fully experience this game, you basically need a guide. A good amount of the optional end game stuff is locked behind a side quest where you have to go back into a dungeon for no other reason than to meet an NPC, a dungeon you walk by like 50 times over the course of the game, and there's like a single plot point A to plot point B window to do it. Then you have to meet this NPC again in a town with no prompting inside another very small window of time. If you mess up either of these, you can't see about 25% of the game.
@SiliconSlyWolf6 күн бұрын
I've never gone looking for reviews of this game, but I also almost never see anyone putting one up in recommendations. This game has possibly ruined many other games for me by not being as good to me by comparison.

That King Arthur game did little on its own to give itself a chance sadly. It's sad what happened to Enix games, because I knew of Enix as the company that made some very good games. Some bad ones, too, but they were a company I went to for their oddities

Amazing retrospective. I found this game as a kid by accident and it became one of my favorites on ps2. The relentlessly dark story and soundtrack are the things that hooked me. I still remember that dude who throws himself off of the tower. I found the game to be too grindy in order to unlock the secret characters and level enough for the final boss which was too hard for me to ever beat. I also found the summon system overly confusing. Arc the Lad TotS might be the best game i never beat. I could revisit it as an adult but i don’t find much motivation to devote time to rpgs anymore. I greatly appreciate finding your video as it let me relive some of these precious memories.

Love the work thank you so much. I always hated how the party treated Luke. In my opinion Luke doesn't have responsibility for sinking of akzeriuth. Van does. If we want to stretch more, so does jade, ion and even guy. Tear knew how little Luke knew of the world. ToA used to be criticized for its heavy use of jargon, but that may be purposeful as Luke serve as a surrogate for the audience. He's as clueless. Even a cute woodland creature knew the basics of phonic artes well enough to know what "5th phonon to the ceiling" meant when jade commanded. That's how normal this is to everyone except the audience and Luke. That's brilliant story telling but I digress Luke's condition is obviously abnormal. And nobody took him seriously. Imagine not just being amnesiac, but literally not knowing anyone. Having your own personality, but having to be someone else you never knew. He never knew his parents, Natalia, anyone in baticul. He never knew how to walk, talk, what 1+1 is. Literally formless. And everyone expects him to know all of that and more. No wonder he was such an asshole. Nobody took time. Nobody except Van. What did they want to happen when they get frustrated with his lack of everything? Of he's gonna latch on to Van and trust him. ToA is a great experiment on identity, empathy, and responsibility. It's a helluva tales of game

@TarksGauntlet13 күн бұрын
I sincerely hope they never make this entry important in any way, shape or form lol. Knowing falcom though it could happen. This series has enough gate keepers and barriers to entry as it is. It'll be nice to keep this as a game most people agree has a wide open gate.
@Official_RetroMania13 күн бұрын
@@TarksGauntlet But the brilliant story writing of Falcom it's that all games are connected... It's similar to Kingdom Hearts. Yes, Trails Kiseki asks for your full dedication so do many long running tv shows with like 20 seasons of One Piece with like 1000 chapters and not every series is for everyone, some people prefer a media what is short has a fast start and end like a movie while others don't mind dedicate years into one series because they grow attached to the brilliant story and amazing characters.
@TarksGauntlet13 күн бұрын
@@Official_RetroMania Sure. And many series have spinoffs that don't require you to be there for the rest. I hope to god this game stays exactly as that. They've basically said every step of the way this isn't part of the overarching narrative, and I hope they keep to that. But this is also falcom. They say anything to sell a copy.

Falcom's real intentions are clear: they are trying to make a Towa multi-verse. The connection between Nayuta and trails is that Towa and Nayuta have the same last name: Herschel. There's a popular fan theory that Nayuta is Towa's great uncle. NIS America doubled-down on this by having Towa's Zemurian Ore weapon in Reverie be "Boundless Trails". Between that and Towa showing up in Tokyo Xanadu, I'm expected Towa to show up in X's 10 Nordic when it releases later this year. Y's is the only Falcom property without Towa and its high time we fixed that massive problem. The other extremely popular fan theory is that the Grandmaster is one of the mythos from Nayuta and that the game functions as the Grandmaster's back-story. Now that Reverie has come out, that theory has lost a bit of steam, but it's still possible. Other than that, when I played Nayuta last year, I came away convinced that Ada (the girl who runs the weapon's shop) is a relative of Noel Seeker, as both have red hair and a penchant for showing us their butt (definitely not complaining about that). I had an amazing time with Nayuta and I really liked the game a lot. It's the kind of simple, easy to understand, comfy platformer that used to be so widely seen in gaming, but seems to not be around anymore.

I've always said "Ba--ten Kay-tose" myself. I had finished the game once, and have always liked it. My early gaming days are a bit fuzzy now, though Baten Kaitos may have been my first actual JRPG. Took me all the way to Mira to start actually figuring out that I was making the game very difficult as I was using the elemental strengths of enemies in my attacks and defenses in each fight, having a much easier time once I stopped being the biggest dumb. I remember Mira the most of any location from all the odd places you visit, and that damned garden with the hands and slimes, took me hours to figure it out. I was a smart-ish kid, but wasn't too bright in some areas.

This game is insanely underrated. The gameplay loop was SO satisfying and fun, it has one of the best soundtracks, and I felt like the story was better than at least 75% of Trails games. People who love this game should play the 2 Zwei games, because this is basically a spiritual successor to that older Falcom series. Also, worth noting that the PC version at the very least has anisotropic filtering, so you wont get the static-y textures when viewed from oblique angles.
