Salah : A Personality Changer ᴴᴰ - Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan
Let me teach you what you will do to appreciate Allah...here's how you appreciate Allah. Make rukuh, make sajda, what is both of these things referring to? Salaat. First he complained about humanity, you're not doing your job appreciating me, you believers, it's your turn, you need to appreciate me. The first step in appreciating me will be...Salaat.
Where is your Salaat? How much we appreciate Salaat is a good indication of how much we appreciate Allah. How active, how vigilant we are in getting up out bed, how lazy we feel in making it to the masjid, how bored we are when the recitation is not entertaining enough. All of those are good indicators of where we stand before Allah (azw).
You know somebody who doesn't know about prayer, doesn't know about the Muslim prayer, a non-Muslim guy walks by and he sees people making Salaat...he's gonna notice these people are standing with their heads down, they're humble before somebody...then they put their heads like this, half way, wow they got even more humble, and when they got up, what happened next? Face on the ground, they got really humbled. In other words, he's noticing that there's a progression in their humility to Allah, to whoever they're worshipping. They're getting even more and more and more subservient. It seems like they're appreciating their master, than they appreciated him more and they appreciated him even more. The progression of Salaat itself teaches us that we're supposed to evolve, grow in our humility to Allah.
So this idea, as the more we serve, the more we're going to become humble. The most, the extreme of humility, is sujood...then from there, because these 2 things still in the end in essence refer to Salaat, they refer to Salaat. What about in between the Salawaat? 'And enslave yourself and worship your master.' In other words, now that rukuh and sajda is done, that's not the only ibadah, you understand ibadah is more than that, ibadah is an attitude, I'm a slave, I'm here to serve, ibadah is how I walk, how I talk, how I think about myself, how I think about others, your entire attitude gets transformed because of prayer....prayer is actually a very big part of a Muslims personality. Not just our behavior.
You know, prayer we think of it as a behavior, but prayer actually, the daily Salawaat, they're supposed to have a really direct effect on how we think. Our attitudes, our thought process, our mentality between dhuhur and asr, my thoughts are gonna be impacted by the dhuhur prayer, between asr and maghrib my thoughts, my priorities are gonna be impacted by the asr prayer. It's the way a Muslim carries himself as a abd (slave), that's shaped, that's what the Salawaat do. You know how pillars hold a building together? The Salawaat hold our day together, they hold our day together and the between hours are dictated by what quality of Salaat we had. Now if the Salaat itself becomes empty, if the Salaat becomes just cardiovascular exercise, it becomes a review session for suratul ikhlas and suratul kauthar (shortest surahs), cause you don't have time for anything more...if it's just becomes that, you're not gonna see any change in your personality.

The actual Salah with KHUSHOO, where you know everything you are saying, where you feel Allah watching you do it, and where you consider Salah as a "conversation" and "meeting" with Allah five times a day. This is the real salah, and if you do this, then Allah puts nur and iman into your heart. The other kind of salah is when you start considering it as a burden, as just a bunch of words and positions, with no idea about what you are saying or doing or who you are standing in front of. If you do this salah, then it is literally meaningless, and has no effect on your heart or your iman. As the prophet PBUH said: "The first blessed thing that will be taken out of my ummah is the KHUSHOO in salah". Nowadays we need to understand this vital crises where our salah has just become a mechanical way of praying rather than a real spiritual experience every time. So from this we learn that our salah, which is our "guard from shamelessness" can be compromised in two ways: 1. Either leaving it all together. OR 2. Abandoning khushoo while we are doing it.

That is shaytan. He's trying to get you not to pray by making you think you've done too many sins. Thinking your sins is too much to be forgiven by Allah is wrong. And go step by step, donot pressure yourself.

Salaah Washes Away Sins Abu Hurairah (Radiallaho Anho) narrates that once Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) asked his Sahabah, "Do you believe that dirt can remain on a person bathing five times a day in a stream running in front of his door?" "No," replied the Sahabah, "no dirt can remain on his body." Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) remarked: "So, exactly similar is the effect of salaah offered five times a day. With the Grace of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) it washes away all the sins." Jabir (Radiallaho Anho) narrates that he heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) saying: "The likeness of five times daily salaah is of a deep stream running in front of the door of a person who bathes therein five times a day." Running water is generally free from dirt, and the deeper it runs the cleaner and purer it is. A bath in such water surely removes dirt from the body and makes it clean. Salaah offered with due regard for its essentials similarly cleanses the soul of all sins. There are several Ahadith of the same meaning, though with slight variations in expression, narrated by different Sahabah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) . Abu Saeed Khudree (Radiallaho Anho) narrates that he heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) saying: "Each of the five Salaah covers up the sins committed since the salaah preceding it. To explain, let us take the case of a person working in a factory. His job is such that his body gets covered with dust. But there are five streams of running water in between the factory and his house and, on his return from the job, he takes a bath in each stream. The effect of five times daily salaah is quite similar. Any sins of omission and commission between two Salaah are forgiven on account of asking for Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) forgiveness and repentance in each salaah." Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) through such examples aims at impressing that salaah has the wonderful power of removing the sins. If we fail to avail of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) Rahmah, surely we ourselves are the losers. To err is human. We are likely to commit innumerable acts displeasing Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) and deserve thereby His wrath and punishment. But look how merciful our dear Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) is! He has most graciously shown us the way to earn His mercy and forgiveness. It is a great pity if we do not avail of this great favor. Our Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) is always eager to show us His mercy on very small matters. It is said in a Hadith thatif a person goes to bed with the intention of getting up for Tahajjud and ,by chance, does not wake up, he receives the full reward for Tahajjud, although he has been enjoying his sleep at the time of Tahajjud. How boundless is the grace of Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) and what a tremendous loss and deprivation if we do not receive blessings from such a Giver.
