Excellent video. Timing is crucial. Told my boss I wanted $100,000. He couldn’t afford to lose me and I knew it. I held the cards at that juncture.I had been doing a great job all along but it didn’t matter.I flexed my muscle when another key member on the team left.No one else had the skill set and it would take time for the company to bring someone on board and get them up to speed.

Thanks for this video. I've been thinking about how to navigate this with my current employer. Seems like the only way to get a large bump is to bring home an offer from another company and have the counter offer it.

Hey Dave, Great content, been watching for a while. This video is quite relevant for me right now, thanks. Aside: I see you have used this location a few times now and I think it's good. But your camera seems to be automatically messing with some of the settings whenever you move. Very distracting. I'm not a camera guy so I don't know whats happening but it looks a little weird. Keep up the exellent work!

Hey Dave, this was an insightful video. I'm about to enter negotiations with a startup, do you have additional advice about negotiating equity?

Usually it's some kind of see-saw. You will trade one for the other, that's what happens in most cases. You may try to raise both but from what I've heard, and seen happen, you usually push for one or the other. Anyways, equity is always a lottery ticket, so it may not mean much. I think it depends on the stage of the company. I've seen really really early stage companies who can't physically pay you, they should be more generous with the equity to make up for it. You can watch a lot of videos about equity (and you should, there's a lot about it) but the tldr usually -> get more equity if you really, really think the company will do well. watch more videos & read up on it for sure! haha

How did your salary negotiations go with Qualcomm, which if I'm correct was the first place you worked at after college? Thats the kind of company I'm looking to work for, I'm a CpE JR right now, plan on graduating next summer. I dont' see myself getting into web design and etc like you did, maybe in the future, but all I know right now is I want to get into chip design. Number one place I want to be at is in Austin, cuz UT is a top school for Computer Architecture, and cuz there are plenty of companies in Austin that do computer chips.

Qualcomm was my first job out of college so I did not do any negotiations for those. I think generally as a student, it is less common, but you still can.

I think those videos adds perspective of what it's like as a regular day working as a SE and provides value to those who are coming from drastically different careers (ie. manual labour job) and may provide extra motivation for them to work harder to achieve their goals. It may also make your subscribers feel like they know you a little better and probably good for your channel too since it'll boost subscriber loyalty!

I agree with Ander S, besides, they give us motivation to keep grinding to achieve our goal, i mean.. it's not gonna be that helpful if the entire video is just about you eating 24/7 like some videos i've seen, but instead showing us really what a day in your life looks like, that'd be something.

Depends on the market. In cities where demand is very high, companies greatly overpay developers. I have friends in Europe who are baffled by how much developers make in US tech hubs, because it's not as glamorous a job over there.
