I have always viewed the New Batman Adventures as a bridge to Justice League. Batman: The Animated Series focused on the Batman Mythos alone, with the idea that Batman was the only active hero. Superman The Animated Series introduced a second major hero to this world, and introduced other heroes like The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman showing that Batman was not alone. The New Batman Adventures brought Batman into this expanded universe which also showcases him working with characters outside the Batman Mythos. It also sees him extend his partnerships beyond Robin by working not just with Batgirl and Nightwing, but other heroes like Superman. This sets through stage for Justice League where Batman not only works as a partner alongside other heroes, but forces the Dark Knight to tackle the more sci-fi, mythical, and magical aspects of the DC Universe. Of course, this was not planned out at the time, but when looking at the shift in tone for The New Batman Adventures, it makes sense if you look at it as a bridge towards Justice League .

Me too. If anything reruns of The Batman Adventures is what got me back into DC right before Justice League aired when I was in middle school. I was born in 90, so the BTAS was out when I was still a toddler so I obviously didn’t appreciate it until I got older but, Cartoon Network showed mostly reruns of Batman adventures. So I could never hate on it.

I remember being very annoyed when they changed up the art style the day "Holiday Knights" aired. But now looking back, I'm glad we got a pretty solid "Bat-Family" show, with a few episodes that could stand up with TAS any day. That one when the girl finds out she's Clayface... I was about Tim Drake's age when that aired. I wasn't expecting to be that sad on a Saturday morning...

I was always able to accept the change between styles because it was building towards a larger shared universe. TAS wouldn't have transitioned as well to a more streamlined style. I still say that was the coolest Scarecrow we've ever had. And the fact that they got veteran horror actor Jeffrey Combs (Reanimator, Frighteners) to voice him was icing on the cake. I actually met his brother when I briefly worked at a liquor store. I know the show took a slight dip in quality as far as writing, but the creators had a lot on their plate and it paved the way to better shows. After that was Batman Beyond, Justice League, and JL Unlimited. Those were stellar shows. Still the best Justice League ever put to screen in my opinion. TNBA may have had a couple of missteps, but they were mistakes I feel they learned from. Regardless of anything, the body of work they produced between TAS and JLU is some of the best animated shows we've ever had. They still hold up over time and it's still great for all ages. When I'm old and gray, I'll probably watch those cartoons.

For me TNBA is both the bridge between Batman TAS and the larger DCAU as well the bridge between BTAS and Batman Beyond. In the first case, it shows Batman's wolrd evolving, going from this grounded noir crime drama to more fantastic sci-fy side of Batman. Instead of fighting mobsters, Batman is now having to deal with more super villains, mad scientists and other weird opponents. On the other, it shows the beginning of Bruce losing his humanity to his Batman persona, cleary a result of Batman spending so much time fighting this monsters that, by TNBA point, he's finally suffering from burnout, no longer showing the same level of emotions as before (all this represent by Kevin Conry, whose voice slowly loses it's distiction each series). He's just a stern vigilante focus is only on the mission. All this lead tos Batman becoming the Old Man Bruce from Batman Beyond. No longer a charismatic billionaries, just old man alone living in his mansion, with batcave full of trophies and memories from his past life.

Joker's design is not good for this phase. I always maintain thay his Justice League/Beyond Return pf the Joker flashback look is the best. World's Finest is one of the best crossovers.EVER. It's still the best Batman V Superman out there. All the crossovers w the Supercrew were fun and you could tell the writers and actors loved doing them.

For me, TNBA was a show with higher highs, and lower lows. The stuff that worked was very strong, but things that didn't hurt more. It makes sense in the context of updating for a new network and a more shared universe with Superman and later Justice League. I do still mostly prefer the more grounded nature of the original BTAS, where the fantastical and super-powered stuff was usually technological in nature.

This video put into words why I always thought TNBA seemed like a watered-down BTAS - it never even tried to pull off the emotional punch of episodes like "Heart of Ice" or "Baby Doll". However, BTAS may not have done justice to "Old Wounds" or "Never Fear"... I only wish they hadn't completely trashed Riddler.

TNAB is a different show. It just exists in the same continuity. Just like Static Shock, Batman Beyond or Justice League are different shows but in the same continuity. It then allows me the ability to appreciate it without any of the disappointment.

For me, what really lowered this show was how Batman was characterized. I didn’t like how cold and grim he was all the time, even as Bruce Wayne. I always like Batman to, with Alfred and his allies, have some humanity and warmth show through, that little Denny O’Neil heart. TNBA is still a good show. I just think it’s not a good sequel to BTAS. That said, I do think Bruce’s characterization bounced back by Justice League, which matches with how he feels more like the same character from BTAS when he’s around Superman and other major DC heroes from outside Gotham.
@caryslan5890
@caryslan5890 Жыл бұрын
I always felt that Bruce's change in attitude was bitterness over the way things ended with Dick Grayson and the fact that no matter how hard he tried he was fighting a never ending battle alone in Gotham. Yes, he has Batgirl and Tim's Robin, but they were much younger than Bruce and were junior partners. Working alongside the Justice League allowed Batman to work alongside other heroes that were not just his partners, but his peers. This showed Batman that he no longer had to shoulder the burden alone and he had allies who were committed to helping him save innocent people and upholding justice. You see this in Justice League and Unlimited where he often jokes with Superman or is one of the few people to get through when he thinks Superman has lost his way. Or the episode of Unlimited where he shows tons of respect towards the Flash, seeing him as a hero. Being on the Justice League brought back Bruce's humanity which he lost after spending years fighting crime in Gotham. Which makes it even more tragic when the Joker cruelly takes that away by torturing Tim Drake.

Okay, it's never been debated that The New Batman Adventures was a new series that took place in the DC Animated Universe. The reason the styles changed was because Batman: The Animated Series and The Adventures of Batman & Robin were aired on FOX Kids. After Batman & Mr Freeze: Subzero went direct to video that ended the style that was on FOX . The New Batman Adventures was aired on KidsWB alongside Superman: The Animated Series, eventually putting out a block called The New Batman/Superman Adventures after their crossover. They changed the style to better match the look of Superman: TAS. For me it wasn't jarring because I was there watching as it aired and just thought "Oh, it's a new style" I was never in the mindset that suddenly it's a new continuity.

The thing that bothers me about an animated series is how little it changes over time. Yes, if you have a great look, you don't want to tamper with that too much, but as you point out, the viewer (and the creators) can get tired of it over time. In a comic book, both writers and artists can change rather frequently, and while that can hurt the sales of comic where the readers liked a certain writer/artist combination, it also allowed for different styles and stories to be told, or for readers to find a new writer/artist they like. As an example of this in animated cartoons, when Scooby Doo dreamed meeting with other Hanna Barbara characters in a Mystery Incorporated episode, it switched to a retro animated style entirely different from the regular art style.

This is why I like anime, because things do change. The art style and story evolve. Take something like Dragon Ball, and you see a massive shift not just in the story or the fact that new allies and Villians are introduced, but the art style changes while characters like Gohan grow up. . Compare that to the Simpsons which still uses the same status quo as when the show debuted in 1989. Yeah, the art got better over time, but the family is the same age as they were over thirty years ago. But look at Batman in the DCAU. He goes from fighting mobsters and his rouges gallery with adventures largely contained in Gotham to going on adventures with the Justice League where he fights aliens, gods, magic users, and even a time traveler just to name a few The DCAU felt like an evolving universe and Batman is the poster boy for this since he was there from the beginning. You can see the universe evolve around him, change him, and there's tons of appeal in that.

@@caryslan5890 Dragon Ball seems to be it's own thing in fairness to anime, I've seen more shows where they just flat out end the series with a massive kill off than a show that grew up with the kids like Dragon Ball into DBZ. Simpsons and the adult cartoon shows following the Flintstones are kind of their own thing except King of the Hill which did age characters a little. I'd view those more as just sitcoms and they don't change much even with live actors. I think that's a lot of the issue is DC works best the more terra firma it is because ultimately Superman and Batman aren't above helping the average person. The X-men and Avengers are "heroes" that never actually help anyone other than themselves or the shadowy government they work for. When's the last time Wolverine foiled a robbery? When did Iron Man solve a murder? Spider-man is the only one helping the average joe of the big names out there on the Marvel side. It's weird to think Marvel got big because their heroes were more grounded yet in actual action their heroes are basically tied up in their own drama with no real help to anyone else. Gee wouldn't it be nice if Professor X would tell us the dark plans of the elites or maybe stop a war? Nah mutant civil rights, because God forbid maybe we'd help our cause more if Cyclops goes and blasts a cartel drug lord or maybe the Avengers go win the War on Terror? I know I know they gotta be villians clad in purple all the time. Prince must have been the ultimate villain in their world since he had more purple than Thanos, Apocalypse, and Magento combined.

Regarding the redesigns of a loth of the characters, a lot of the villains look great and some basically the same. Man-Bat (who only appears in the tie-in comics), Harley Quinn and Ra's al Ghul's look identical (if anything Harley looks a bit better in TNBA). Two-Face and Clayface also look basically the same just a bit adjusted for the new art style (although they looked a bit better in BTAS). I personally prefer the Catwoman and Penguin designs in TNBA because they are more comic accurate. Joker looks equally great with his Batman Beyond and JL designs if not a bit scarier (but his TNBA design is not good). The only characters I definitely agree look inferior are Killer Croc, Riddler, Ventriloquist and Mr. Freeze. Bane doesn't look great in either BTAS or TNBA. In TNBA he has a better outfit (minus the spikes) but in BTAS he has a better mask although it's still inferior to the the one he has in the comics. Mad Hatter I prefer his short stature and green attire in TNBA I'm not a fan of the white hair and the way they drew his face because he looked way older as opposed to his BTAS design. For Poison Ivy I love both her designs because they signify her character progression by showing her become more and more plant like as she sheds her humanity. And I think it goes without saying considering that pretty much everyone involved with BTAS and especially Bruce Timm hated Scarecrow's design prior to his TNBA redesign that he looked best in TNBA. Along with that Batgirl's redesign was possibly the biggest improvement. The gray and blue suit she had was okay but It did just feel like a clone of Batman's suit and even though I know that's the point in the beginning, the all-black suit with yellow and blue accents is so much more striking and memorable and is the one to have made more cultural impact.

I much prefer TNBA to B:TAS. I prefer all of the TNBA character redesigns to the original B:TAS character designs with the exception of The Riddler. I find TNBA far more aesthetically pleasing than B:TAS. I was born in '98, so by the time I was born both B:TAS and TNBA existed, and therefore I didn't experience the jarring aspect of the switch occurring. I enjoyed playing with my TNBA-style toys more than my B:TAS-style toys, so as far as selling toys go, the TNBA changes worked for me in that way as well. If we're grouping TNBA in with B:TAS to rank episodes, while my #1 episode would be "Heart of Ice", the overwhelming majority of my other favorite episodes come from TNBA. #Batman

The statement that "...Batman TAS was more faithful to the comics than The New Batman Adventures" is in degrees of relativity. Example: In the comics and the 1960s live action series, Barbara Gordon was a college graduate when she first became Batgirl, not a high school student like the Betty Kane Bat-Girl! BOTH animated series made slight changes to "established mythos", which is why I enjoyed both. However, I do prefer the design work from TAS to that of TNBA!

BtAS was a better show. New Batman show felt simpler, cheaper, more campy, less innovative and more kid friendly (likely mandated by the studio execs). The new designs were generally awful in comparison (except Scarecrow who was awesome). It still had fantastic episodes. It was a world that blended better with Superman. While I do enjoy the team ups, I always felt Batman worked better as a standalone. All these villains Batman struggled against so much are easily defeated by Superman. He could defeat all the villains in a weekend visit. Also the idea of a kid Robin is stupid. Comic history be damned. Placing a child in harm's way against armed criminals is fucking insane. What happens to him (and in the comics) is Batman's fault. There's a reason why we don't allow children to be police officers too. And putting him bright colors? I know they try to explain the bright colors in the comics, but it's still stupid. He's there to appeal to kids. But no kid has ever wanted to play Robin. We all wanted to be Batman.

Half of the 4th season of the animated series had a different opening sequence and introduced newer characters, obviously the animation style was changed to appear like that of superman and jstice league, with a sleeker more modern style, as opposed to the 1940's style. Some of the character designs were also changed to resemble the live action appearances. The point of the new series was to show a batman who was part of a larger world with other heroes and darker subject matter. Over all both series are part of the same series.

There are some connections between those two, and there are some differencies. Imo, they wanted to start a new show, but in the last second, they decided to stick to the good old material, which has been proved that works. So it was kinda both. A new show, and just a rewamped new season at the same time. With the official answear not bein answered for a long time. And than, even after that, it still kinda looks uncomfortable. As if they switched the serious nolanverse with kinda burton visuals and literally danny elfman theme, into the snyderverse. Dang ! I just realised what happened ! While I didn't get to watch this show as often as I would've liked as it didn't air here in Canada on a channel that I had access to, I've seen a ton of episodes since then thanks to the DVDs I own. That's another reason TNBA gets lumped in with BTAS. Warner Bros. chose to not only market the DVD release as part of BTAS, but also included it in the complete series DVD and Blu-ray boxsets for BTAS. Luckily the DVDs, and I'm assuming the Blu-ray set, allows you to choose to watch the episodes with either the BTAS theme or the theme for The New Batman/Superman Adventures so you can choose to distinguish them from BTAS.

I watched tons of other shows like Pokemon, Digimon, Animorphs, Radio Active, Sailor Moon, and reruns of The Odyssey, so maybe TNBA was on there at a time, like really early in the morning, or super late at night, because I was in bed by 9 pm every night because of my younger siblings. I also don't remember Batman Beyond airing on YTV either.

Wait, some people actually think this is a completely different show and continuity? I understand BTAS to NBA is kind of an anomaly, but the latter is a continuation of the former just with a different art style. Both iterations fall under the DCAU and connect to other shows like Justice League. I think of it like Peter Jackson's LotR vs Peter Jackson's Hobbit --- same world, even if the aesthetics and tone don't entirely mirror each other.

Personally I don't really agree though that TNBA and the rest of the DCAU doesn't reach the heights of BTAS. In fact I would say that in a lot of ways they far surpass it. For example I would say that the two-parter episode Wild Cards are the best Joker episodes in the DCAU. Another example with Joker is in Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. Having seen almost every single appearance of Mark Hamill as the Joker in every medium he has played him, I can honestly say that Return of the Joker is Mark Hamill's best ever and most terrifying performance as the Joker. Not to mention that they really benefited from having overarching story arcs specifically in JLU like the phenomenal Thanagarian arc, the Cadmus arc and lots more. Don't get me wrong BTAS is phenomenal and iconic but I think it often suffered from being a bit too formulaic. I don't hold that against anyone since they didn't originally start with the intention of expanding the universe but they definitely evolved with their storytelling and mature themes.

I figured the series, changed because Bruce Wayne changed. TAS Wayne was a meek, brown suit yellow shirt, type of guy, similar to Clark from All Star Superman. Whereas TNBA Wayne is a no nonsense business man, similar to Luthor. Maybe Grayson's absence hurt Wayne, like in the comics, as a result Batman got angrier. Batman stopped appealing to the criminal's humanity, more focused on locking them up instead of rehabiliting them. Joker and Riddler became more cartoonish to oppose Batman's overly stoic nature. Catwoman lost interest and flirted with Nightwing to make Batman jealous. I recall Mr. Freeze exploding on an oil platform, so that would explain his mental and physical change. I think Wayne found a way to cure Nora, I guess Mr. Freeze was sad that he couldn't be with her, much like Hohenheim Elric. Meeting Superman proved to Batman that he isn't alone, that the mask isn't a burden, it's an honor. This philosophy expands between JL and JLU. I don't remember when Batman time travels and meets his old self, that's when. Batman interacting with Static reminds me of TAS. I was born in the 90's, Batman, Superman, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond I watched it all, back to back. I'm glad the series changed, there's no way Bruce Wayne would remain the same after all these years.

I have TWO great issues with this show: 1. The episode "old wounds" with Batmsm interrogating a thug in front of his WIFE AND KID. Horrible characterization of Batman. It reminds me to Nightwing Year One when Bruce fires Robin in rage for not following his instructions against Clayface. Truly awful. 2. Batgirl looking like a teenager, around 15 - 17 years old. This show really pushed the Batman x Batgirl relationship (culminating in Killing Joke rooftop sex scene on 2016) yet she looks like a child and Bruce like an adult. It's so disgusting. Barbara should have been same size and shape as Nightwing. The issue is worse since in Batman Beyond they had a relantionship and in the comics Bruce gets Barbara pregnant. The worst storyline from the Timm universe. The only reason why I care about this show is due to Nightwing making his animated debut. Ps. I hate how they give Jason origin's to Tim. He should have been Jason Todd from the beginning not Tim Drake.

Here's my isses with your issues: 1. In same episode it's later shown Bruce clearly realizes he went too far with his interrogration, he gets that guy a job at Wayne Enterprises afterwards, helps him get out of being a criminal, and vists him all time to check in on him and asks how's his family is doing. Bruce being flawed a person, making a mistake, and fixing it through compassion is good characterization. 2. Batman x Batgirl stuff already existed in BTAS. Barb has a dream about kissing Batman and blushes when she sees him takes his shirt off. Though she's not a teenager, it's established she's college age and an adult. Still don't like the realtionship of course, but I'm just saying it was already a thing before TNBA.

Look it is as simple as they wanted a unified art style more closely matching the cleaner style in Superman TAS and to also keep doing batman stories again.. They just went a little too far in some changes to the models. They even admitted as much and went back some in Justice League which as the final refined art style for the DCAU was decent enough. Tho I dunno why Ivy was still pale. Hell by batman beyond Joker had his red lips back and they show clips IN the older art style. Technically it was a different show but not different continuity and was a revival ahead of them being embolden enough to do Justice League. I mean this stuff is documented in their own documentary extras.
