This bad tile job did not come cheap. Tile and other materials were bought at a big box store, the installation was also arranged and paid for at the box store. The job is a total failure, was not installed according to proper methods, was also an extremely poor finished result with no movement allowed for, exceedingly bad lippage and everything else that could be done wrong, was done wrong.

This doesn't make me feel very confident in my own work because I don't think that tile job looks bad... you can literally pick apart anybody's work if you look close enough. We're not building Swiss watches here, it's a tile floor. Guess I'd have to see it in person... but on camera it looks great. Maybe a case of being too picky? Like I said, it looks good to me.

The tile will crack from no expansion joints, the grout lines can crack from poor sub sheet install, if your lines dont line up and tile dont sit flat, then you screwed a customer. It's ok in your own home as a DIY but never for someone who pays "thousands"!

Dude, I agree with you 100%. The easiest thing to do is pick someone else's work apart. That being said, from the quick glimpse of a couple of the grout joints, and what he was saying about the unevenness, it might not have been a very good job. I don't like to pick other people's work apart, unless it is done painfully bad.

not the worst tile Job I have ever seen, but I would not say "nothing wrong". Grout lines are horrible. The sealer issue is not a big deal, can always get haze off and reseal. As for movement, tile guys have argued about how much is needed, BUT for a small room like that almost none is needed. So was the tile job perfect? far from it...but it was also not horrible.

Nothing wrong? Lippage and grout lines are critical, and easy to do right the installer is incompetent. Do you accept incompetent work from a mechanic or plumber? I wouldn't. These tile guys don't get trained and their boss never inspects the work, just slap it in and cash the check.

No I went to a big box store too. The contractor they use for flooring was a nightmare. The one guy was obviously high out of his mind and he was the proj. mgr but disappeared for hours leaving the one person to do most of the work. The floor was buckled near the steps and the molding wasn't even attached and he damaged a fixture.They also caused the ceramic tile in my bathroom to loosen when they installed the other floor. I just filed a dispute on my credit card and wouldn't let them return. I tried going thru them and wasn't getting anywhere. They didn't even offer to correct it by sending a different person. Sounds like the same person that did mine.

The orange box store quoted me $6000 for simple edge quartz 26" x 48" island plus a bay window ledge (trapezoidal shape) of about 5ft by 3ft. They quoted a 6 to 8 weeks lead time for installation. However, after 18 weeks, still no countertops and nothing but excuses from the box store and the contracted vendor. They hadn't even ordered the countertop material, yet they charged my credit card the entire amount of money on the first day that I ordered it. The contract stated that i could not cancel, but I asked them to cancel and fortunately they did, but they kept $1000 of the $6000 that I had paid without providing a reason for withholding the $1000 - calling it "internal information". I really hate that store.

So I'm a bit slower, but I get things done right. If I'm not sure about something, I have many older friends specialized in just about every feild, and I consult with them, and sometimes pay them to help if it's my first time doing something new. Not cutting the bottom of the doorjambs and slipping the tile under drives me crazy, I use my Fein multi-tool to cut it, it might take an extra bit of time but it saves a boat load of time trying to cut the tile to fit and anytime you put grout up against wood it always cracks out. When its cut around the jamb its always a sign of inexperience or straight up laziness.

The problem is, that if they’re rectified tiles, and the surface is uneven with deep grout gaps, they will crack as soon as you slide any furniture on the surface. It is very good to keep contractors up to your higher standard. I had to give up on the initial contractor because of that. The weird part is that they were the ones to recommend these tiles in my case, which you shouldn’t do unless you are absolutely confident you can pull it off with your skill

Funnily enough, I'm unlicensed. I do this type of work, and other. (I have to eat too). "Oh god you're unlicensed, you may have terrible quality!" Yeah no. In fact I trash the trades far more than burnt customers. Every code is followed, plus more. I cannot tell you, just for example, how many botched electrical work I find, done by licensed electricians, with inspections that were signed off. It is utterly mind boggling. So the point I am making here, is that tiler was fucking trash and don't be thinking it was an illegal or unlicensed person.

I'm the same, unlicensed but I have a well reviewed company, work repeat customers and referrals and average out at $50 - $80 an hour. Licenses make sense in some applications but mostly it's stupid to me. They have licensed painters, licensed flooring installers etc. Dude just because I don't want to pay and go through a 3-4 year apprenticeship to get a license as a painter doesn't mean that guy with a piece of paper can paint better than me. It's ridiculous On top of that every union worker has to be licensed. Look at those big jobs, how many of those guys are drug addicts, rough, cant speak to customers, have no idea what they're doing. All those guys are licensed lmfao I value a well reviewed company or a referral more than I value a license. Only thing is I probably wouldn't hire an unlicensed guy to replace an electrical panel, or run gas lines etc. Certain areas I would prefer a licensed guy + good reviews

I've been the same ever since, done a city and Guilds plumbing so I can do my own plumbing, 8 week intensive plastering course because I needed some pestering done . I've saved a small fortune. A lot of installers don't realize that just because you put down 2 layers of ply to try to stiffen the floor for a stone install, it's not the correct way. You must inrease the stiffness of the floor joists underneath. Sistering, decrease joist spacing, etc. TCNA is very specific on subfloor loads. Especially on stone.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi Жыл бұрын
Correct, joist structure and floor assembly must meet L/720, which includes joist deflection and deflection between the joist. However if you read the TCNA Handbook on this subject you will find it is not the job of the tile installer to determine suitability of the floor for any kind of tile. That goes to the builder, architect, engineer. or design professional.

I had a similar experience with the blue box store. In fact I am in the middle of negotiating the resolution now. One year ago I had 950 sf of porcelain tile installed over concrete. The box store's installation company sub-contracted it out to an independent tile installer. He was late starting the job (1st bad feeling). Then he "took a couple days off." Then he brought his girlfriend into my house so that he had "company" while he worked. Even after I kicked her out, he kept bringing her back. It was a bad combination of inattention to the job and incompetence. Within a few months several tiles broke from being stepped on. Grout began popping up. It has taken four months for the box store to even admit that it was an installation problem - they blamed it on me for dropping something on the tiles. Now they want to bring back the same incompetent contractor to fix it. It won't go well. LESSON? Never use one of the big box stores to contract to do anything. An irony is that I have done tiling myself but am too old now to do a job this big.

Homedepot projects were some of my first tile projects. They didn’t pay well. There were many issues. First off with 4 different companies being involved in simple projects the dumbest things go wrong and it is up to you as the tile/laminate floor installer to do everyone else’s job including calming down the customer and doing customer service. There is Home Depot, the measure company, the big contracting company that gets all the projects from homedepot (they hire the subs, set dates, deal with customer service and so on), and then there is you the sub contractor. You are the only small business and they try to stick you with the bill of unsatisfied customers in anyway they can because they treat home improvement like cookie cutter business. They try to undercut the market and set low prices so by the time the money gets to u it’s very little. So imagine what kind of quality worker will stick around to do this work. After getting good I spent most my time redoing projects after other installers who just botched them either they were new or this is a side thing for them. The homedepot employees recommended things that couldn’t be used in certain aspects, or didn’t order the right stuff and if you were lucky I would waste time making a store run if it was in stock. If u weren’t ur material would be in at 2weeks and we would be back in a month. Doesnt sound good when ur original project date was already changed 3 times and what was supposed to happen in a couple of weeks is now 6months later. It’s hard for the customer not to through out his frustration on you when ur the only one there and you have to remind him you are not Home Depot but ur own company so they should be mad at them. Home Depot will also do a terrible job to inform you that most likely unforeseen extra work will come up most likely and u should be financially prepared. Because if I charge $300 to do leveling homedepot and the hiring contractor have no mercy and ur leveling cost is $650. So now ur inexpensive project that was 20 percent below market value is a mess and u lose tons of money and vacation days and sanity after all the extra fees u are 30 percent above average. If ur the sub and the customer complains about something that homedepot agreed to do but never put in ur order they and the contractor will try to make u take the hit or at least half of what they had to pay the customer to make them happy even if it is completely there fault. The worst part is by the time ur arguing with the charge backs and have solid facts and a clear understanding between the parties that ur not at fault management has changed and now new mangment of those departments doesn’t know what ur talking about and will say “well I wasn’t the one dealing with it, or I wasn’t at the site visit so I don’t know...” if they haven’t changed and they say “ we can’t take a $3000 hit so how about u take a $1500 hit but we will get u extra on next projects to return it to u and get u good big easy projects for the next 6 months” I agree and management changes a couple months later and now the new guys owe u nothing. After all this info anyone should understand that only an inexperienced novice or a loser with no ability to do quality work will work with these companies... if ur lucky when U get work done You will get newbies with lots of talent and potential that might wing it and get it right or don’t know their worth yet. Hope this info helps consumers and this looking for work to Avoid Home Depot

I installed blinds and curtains for an outfit that subcontracts for Home Depot. I subcontracted for them. There is no accountability at all. Clients regularly waited months for repair work and I was coached to do crappy work. I quit after three months. Never hire box store installation companies in your home!

Seems to be very good advice and a common theme.

Peter K Stupedro Couldn’t agree more ! Customers are paying a 20% sure charge of whatever the subcontractor quotes the job at. It’s overpriced insurance for shit work.

Exactly why when a customer has a special request I tell them NO !!! As an installer there’s only 1 way to do the job ! I understand that there are hacks out there but I also understand the other side of things

Hey sal, I like most of ur videos , you have tone of experience and thanks for sharing that with people interested on the trade, . About the book that u r showing, i don’t think it could be used in court for any proposes , I understand that all the installers needs to get trained and get licenses and all that . Now most of the home owners care more about the final bill and looks , like u said it looks decent , but u point all the details out and then looks horrible , if a carpenter get to see the paneling job in that room is gonna say the same , looks good but after few minutes will look horrible , .. don’t get me wrong is like every other trade , .. As a home owner I prefer to hire somebody who is recommended by a close friends or family ,specially on things has nothing to do with electrical or plumbing .

Very similar experience with "a guy" who recently did the tile in my new home which I acted as owner/builder (homeowners permit). showed up at the house when it was under construction with a book, pictures of previous work references from other neighbors and went to see some of his previous jobs. Anyways in the end many of the same issues as seen here. The small details stand out in the video if you have every gone through this. Very obvious after you take a careful look at it over time. A great education to the average Joe/Jane Homeowner. Thank you.
