Their commission should be directly bound to the profit margin. In my experience its usually a 5 point range tied directly to the margin. They get 2% on a low margin job and 7% on anything above 30% for instance. If they have to chop to get the job and your margin is on your bottom limit, they get less.

This is very interesting. And here is an interesting twist. One owner actually charges his customer more for jobs that his designer does. He sells at xx and his designer has no choice but to charge xxx because he built it into the system that the designer uses. He does not use the same system. His "reasoning" is that he has to pay the designer. I have never heard of such a business model. And, he does not understand that he DOES save time because he is not going on the call. All he is doing is providing support (from his desk) and because of that "the designer is not saving me time" his words.

Yeah that sounds like a recipe for disaster. Why leave money on the table

here is how different the price difference is. For a couple of jobs, the designer's price to customer was 3,000 land he could discount that up to 20% while the owner would give the customer a starting price of LESS THAN the designer's discounted price and then discount that 20%!!! Thus, the designer's DISCOUNTED price was still higher than the owner's STARTING price (before his 20% discount to the customer). @@derrekholland5207
