I feel like the only reason why it didn't sell better was because it was a late era Switch game. That, and maybe a little bit of Mario RPG fatigue.

​@HelloSayEm6 It's also that Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake came out a week after Brothership and it sold tremendously well at the last 3 weeks since it's released. Especially in Japan because Dragon Quest is huge in Japan.

The best part about Brothership's opening sales is it narrowly outselling those of the TTYD remake and thus forcing morons who tried to stoke a fanbase war between Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario like The BitBlock to shut up unless they want to call TTYD a failure too.

It does make me happy to see Super Mario Party Jamboree selling well, and seeing the Hudson Soft era of Mario Party finally returning. People really need to stop fixating on sales, like it's the life and death of a series. Could the sales be better? Of course. But is there any cause for concern? I'd say no. Instead of doom-posting, we should be celebrating the full return of Mario Party and the Mario RPGs.

Thank God that Brothership is at least selling well and if it manages to at the very least surpass the sales of both Superstar Saga and Dream Team without even necessarily having to surpass Bowser's Inside Story and just become the 2nd best selling game in the series, that would not only be huge for the game because it would truly fully save it from flopping, but also a massive W for the series in general and fully solidifying a very bright future for it post-Brothership. TTYD Remake is also thankfully totally saved at this point since 2 million copies is the average sales range in terms of how much the games in the series sell, with them selling 2-3 million copies at max (or even 4 million if you're Super Paper Mario), so the remake selling this much is more than good enough to consider it successful and also showing a bright future for Paper Mario as a series. Now with SMP Jamboree, I think the biggest reason (and I'd say it's the main one) that it already sold as well as did aside from the series regaining its footing and rebuilding itself throughout the Switch 1 era, was because of it being a holiday title especially considering how well Nintendo marketed it. Holiday sales are always one of the biggest contributing factors of why plenty of big games sell hugely, because of them being released at one of the best times of the year every year, Jamboree clearly came out at a great time, and the fact that it sold THIS well already is pretty crazy impressive considering it also released as a late in the generation game, and it still managed to come out on top. Almost fully happy myself about these results and I can't wait to see how all of them continue to do throughout the rest of this year (especially Mario & Luigi) and how the future unfolds for all these series in general.

Yeah, I remember seeing some doomposting about those week 1 sales for Brothership, even though they definitely didn't necessarily allude to a flop. After all, Superstar Saga supposedly had a pretty similar first week, yet still sold pretty well in the end. Anyway, it's good to see that Brothership did pretty well, considering that the Mario & Luigi series was having a very rough time with sales prior to that. Seems it's back on its feet now, though.

Adding to the advantage and context of "Mario Party vs Mario RPGs". Mario Party got online on the Switch and it's a famous multiplayer game while RPGs are single-player.

Look at that. TTYD Remake finally reached over 2 million copies. Now hopefully it can beat Origami King by making 1 million plus copies more so that Nintendo & Intelligent System can finally bring Paper Mario back on it's roots since 2004.

@ I definitely think they didn't hit the mark with OK's battle system, but I also don't think they should do exactly what the first 2 games did. I kinda want to just want to see what kind of crazy battle system they come up with and hope it's good.

@OChunks I don’t mind experimentation but maybe they can take turns? Like the next game is traditional, then the one after that is more experimental, but then after that is traditional again, etc etc. That way both sides of the PM fanbase have something?

@tjlnintendo That's probably fair enough, I just don't really know what else they could do with the formula of the first 2 games. Knowing Nintendo, they'd probably find a way but I feel like Paper Mario has a ton of potential for experimentation.

I think another advantage jamboree had over the rpg’s is the online multiplayer and how solid it is considering that I know a bunch of people bought it just to play online with friends (my cousin who normally doesn’t buy games day one bought it day one to play online)

I think there is a good chance that the Switch will soon have a huge eshop sale, buy these Nintendo Switch games and play them on Nintendo Switch 2 or something like that, if Nintendo does that then a lot of Switch 1 games will get one last boost in sales, probably including M&L Brothership

This is extremely great news to hear! Especially when it comes to TTYD selling pretty good for a game released towards the end of the Switch’s life cycle! I’m very glad it was able to reach 2 million copies and with that, I think it’s safe to say that the Paper Mario series will pretty much be having a bright future from here on out. We’ll know for sure once the next game comes out in 2028. With these sales, there’s no need for doomposting because 2-3 million is pretty much the average range for the games to sell. And with you describing TTYD selling just about the same as TOK really says something. In any case, I’m sure life time sales will probably be around 2.3-2.r million as well. Again, really happy hearing this news and makes me more excited, hopeful, and optimistic about the next Paper Mario game being a traditional sequel to TTYD that we’ve been all been waiting for. Original characters, traditional TTYD battle system, EXP, TOK world design and unique areas are gonna be lit! 🔥

the mario and luigi series has always been a mediocre to poor seller for nintendo anyway, it’s why we didn’t get a new game for so long and only for remakes of the most popular ones. so on the switch, the console where every other nintendo franchise gets a boost (even the poorly selling metroid franchise) the fact mario and luigi’s launch period is still one of the worst in the niche franchise (still basically on par with the lower selling ones) is actually really bad.

So? They sell well enough to warrant 5 games and 2 remakes. You are acting like Activision. “Oh what? Crash 4 didn’t do Call of Duty numbers? Failure.” Rpgs always tended to be niche with some exceptions.
