I work as an equity trader in sales and trading and would say that quantitative skills and technical skills such as programming and data science are in high demand.
Do you have daytraders in your department or do you mostly swinf trade on fundamentals?

Im a Working Student- Data Engineer in BI-division at a brand of BNPP. Finished my B.A. Economics and am enrolled in Applied Maths and Physics. I want to become a Actuary(focusing data science) and switch after 15 years or so back to pure finance (family office, risk management at bank, etc)
It’d say this is a pretty spot on assessment with the exception of a few points-at least for the bulge bracket i’ll be working for. 1. Lack if diversity- being apart of the incoming analyst class, i’d say there’s a nice 45-55 if not 50-50 split between men and women with the former being favored in the first set of numbers. Diversity is stressed at our bank, and our CEO is a woman. 2. Prior knowledge- the barriers of entry aren’t as steep in terms of being knowledgeable, but more how well can you think on your feet, learn, and your intensity. A majority of my fellow interns were very interested in the markets but by no means have any sort of expertise in them. Some of them knew little to nothing, demonstrated their ability to learn and have some sort of stem type background. As you said, it’s a niche area where it’s hard to gain experience without being in it, but I wouldn’t let a lack of market knowledge deter you from pursuing a job in the field. Demonstrating the ability to learn through financial coursework and interest in an area is more important than knowing the spot for TRYUSD. This is advice only for those trying to break in at a Jr. level.

1:20 to put this into context, 2:00 pro: earning potential, art of working, learning curve, hedge fond exit option. thrived under pressured environment. 2:55 develop many transferrable skills. fixed skin development. 4:50 a global leader board to compete with 5:30 S&T is highly technical and market focused. typically, as a first year, you will do 60-80 hours a week. 7:00 the downside: not for the faint-hearted. 7:15 because you're gonna meet arrogant, bold, loud, direct, individual. male-dominated: room for diversity very early morning: before the market open. very niche not applicable to other career. no career safety: very risky, when you're not performing.

Really enjoyed this video Afzal! I'm a second year undergrad hoping to break into Investment Banking. I really enjoy your current style of videos but I also loved the chats you had with individuals working in finance/consulting that came from non traditional backgrounds. It'd be great to see a video in a style similar to this one but about ways to indicate our enthusiasm for finance / ways to strengthen our CV's coming from a degree outside of finance. Thanks again for all the content and best of luck with Simpley!
It sounds like this video was more about trading. Does the sales side have similar pros/cons? Is it just as technical?

@antonmsk34013 жыл бұрын
CFA is a program more catered to portfolio management and financial planning. If you already did a finance bachelor, then the knowledge of a CFA is not particularly relevant or useful for sales and trading. Many people get it however and it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Great video! Can you do a video on asset management?
Could u do a video about the differences and similarities between a HF like Citadel and an asset management firm such as BlackRock (or AM division of a bank such as GS)
Could you do a video on Quantitative Strategists. I've just finished my Engineering Spring insight at top bank and I am very interested in pursuing a strat role for next summer. I found out that there are different types of work a strat does depending on the division, thus I would appreciate it if you were to share your insights on this topic. Thanks!
Could you do a video on Structuring? I've heard that it sortof escapes the niche focus of a typical trader as it focuses on creating bundles of assets. Thanks!
Another informative video! Would you say that it is equally as hard to break into the sales and trading division oppose to the investment banking division? Or is the ibd still the toughest? 👍
IBD is still the toughest when it comes to banking and finance, atlhough data/comp science fields in general are becoming increasingly more competitive.
