Another thing I found out looking at manuals while shopping for an AM5 mobo is the PCIe 4.0 X4 SB-CPU uplink. You mention it in passing in the video, but I believe it's actually crucial information because there's generally a lot of stuff crammed into that link - USB, SATA, PCIe and M.2 ports. I think this can become a real bottleneck with some heavy I/O workloads. LGA1700 is better in terms of PCIe lanes and MB uplink imho, but the downside with that platform - aside from the crazy power draw - is the very limited upgrade path as well as the i7-i9 stability/degradation issues - and of course the loss of trust that ensues. Anyway, nice board presentation/summary 👍

I think the MSI X670 Carbon is pretty solid. 2 Gen 5 M2 slots without losing GPU lanes. No USB4 though, which is not a must have for me. You can run 2 GPUs at x8 for those that need it. I've had no issues.

Yep, it looks like it's one of, if not _the_ AM5 ATX board with the best specs for a workstation in that price range. AFAIK, the Asus Crosshair Hero packs a bit more features and a better VRM, but it also costs a lot more and has less native video out ports ; the ProArt Creator costs about the same but is lacking in some areas (including a much weaker VRM and less SATA ports, though it does include a DP input port) ; the Biostar Valkyrie is also comparable except with a much better VRM, but you lose the Wifi and it costs a lot more. The Carbon hits a really great balance.

@@Airwolf2030 You may be disappointed with the x870 boards. Because they will natively support Pci Express Gen 5 x 16 and USB 4 you can expect less lanes and thus maybe a scenario where it may only have 3x m.2 slots and 4x SATA ports. They have to give and take somewhere. You will most likely have to go high end with x870e. PCI express gen 4 x16 is more than enough for GPU's. Even with the Gen 5x 4 m.2 I feel gen 4x 4 is more than enough for NVME drives. At this point in time all this is just marketing BS. The price of gen 5 m.2 drives are outrageous! FYI Gen 5 x8 is the same speed as Gen 4 x16. If you are on a budget check this x670 board out - MSI X670-P WIFI. The MSI Carbon in my opinion and others here is probably the best board but damn it's expensive.

This is a nice board. From the manual: "When M.2_3 is enabled, PCIEX16_1 will run x8 and PCIEX16_2 will run x4" so yeah, out of four m2 slots, one gen5 is useless, that leaves you with two gen5s and one gen4, that's a generous assortment if you want to upgrade in the future with more than one gen5 in the system evantually. Other boards in this category usually have one gen5 and 2-3 gen4, one of which may be restricted.

I’m a bit of a PC Gaming noob, and when it comes to motherboards, I have always wanted to know why people upgrade their motherboards so often? If you’re gaming or video editing and everything is running perfectly fine, then what are some advantages to upgrading motherboards? I have a cheap 2 year old Gigabyte B660 motherboard, and have had no issues with it. If I were to upgrade, to let’s say the board featured in this video, will I really feel a massive increase to performance? The only way to see significant performance gains, no matter the motherboard you buy, is if you upgrade your CPU or GPU. Components have failsafes to throttle temperatures to protect themselves from breaking. Most boards I see are loaded with M.2 storage slots and multiple USB ports. So, what is the reason why someone would want to buy, or upgrade to an expensive motherboard? How can there be a drastic difference in performance, between a basic motherboard for only $200 bucks that works, compared to a $1,500 or higher motherboard? I’d love to see you do a live performance test, showing off the differences between 2 identical PC Builds, with the only differences being that one has a cheap $200 motherboard, versus the most expensive motherboard on the market using identical specs. I’m talking about using the same pc case, power supply, fans, memory, AIO, and with both running an Intel i9-14900K and Nvidia 4090, so that we as consumers can see if there is any differences in FPS for games, or differences to video editing. I just think it would be a fascinating video to watch. Anyways, thanks for all of the reviews you do that are just excellent, but let’s put some of these technologies head to head sometime. I am not expecting you to do this all the time, since it would be a total pain in the butt. I am just talking about a few per year that would be a nice watch. Cheers!

This board has 3x5gen M2 slots and a single 4gen M2 slot. However you can use 2 5 gen M2's and the single 4 gen M2 no problem and still run GPU at 16x. The issue, as mentioned earlier, is if you populate the 3rd 5gen M2, this drops GPU to 8x because at that point you have used all 24 lanes from CPU (16x+4x+4x) . The newer x870e is even worse as 4x Gen5 lanes are used for USB4, leaving you only 20 lanes. So if your GPU is using 16x, it means you can only populate 1 of the Gen 5 M2 slots without compromising the GPU.

Much better PCIE configuration. 2 Gen5 PCIE NVME (to CPU) + 2 Gen4 PCIE NVME (to chipset), all able to be installed at the same time without having to sacrifice half the bandwidth to the GPU slot. You still don't get 10Gb ethernet and your front USB-C drops to 10Gb, but honestly, I'd rather have the better NVME support without needing to eat into my GPU's PCIE lanes.

The Asus X670E-F is the same as the MSI. 2 Gen5 NVME to cpu and 2 Gen4 NVME to chipset. All 4 can be installed no problem and GPU runs at 16x. You want to build the perfect motherboard for the 2020s, here is the layout. First reduce the "spam" components (like junk mail, just hardware, never used) These components are, ethernet ports, SATA ports (no one uses spinning hard drives any more (unless its in a nas), WIFI on MB. Think of how motherboards have evolved so far. Audio card have disappeared and integrated into motherboards. Most motherboards have 4-6 SATA ports each take up 2 channels. Now days if you want to run, say a nas over LC fiber, you have to add a card taking up to 4 pcie lanes. If they ditch the 2 ethernet ports they can replace them with 2 SFP slots. With these slots you can have almost any port you want, etehernet, fiber, wifi, etc. Now take those extra channels from the SATA ports and give them to either extra m.2 or beef up the pcie lanes so you can do 2 16x slots, etc..
