Salient OS - An Arch Distro for Gamers and Multi-Media Enthusiasts

Hey OTG, thank you for taking a look at Salient. It is greatly appreciated. One point is that the XFCE edition also has i3wm as another session option which is why there are some applications (nitrogen) that are specifically used in that environment when logged in to it. I did notice I had left Brave in Calamares, which will never install via Calamares since it is AUR based. Oops! :)

I was wondering how brave could be installed yes 🤔😉... Since as you say it's an aur package.. That coud if you had compiled it in a custom repo? 😊

I've been looking to move from a Debian base to an Arch based distro and was about to go with Manjaro, but I think this one suits me more. Thanks for the video OTB, gonna start backing up my Mint system now and move to Salient.

This is a visually appealing distro with a low installation barrier to those wanting to try Arch. On first look this distro author has done very job at packaging and presentation. I'm not a gamer but will give this distro a try anyway. I'm too worried about a one-man distro as this will get loaded on a virtual or hardware other than my daily-driver. Thanks again Steve for bringing attention to Linux options. We are all about tinkering and options, aren't we?

Piper is used with ratbagd and is great for gaming keyboards like the Logitech ones. Gamers like their RGB and this makes it simple to configure the RGB and macros on those devices.

From what I understand CUDA is an Nvidia proprietary and helps offload some Gpu processing. I usually hear CUDA being refereed to in tandem with machine learning.

I have played with this a few times in a VM. It is quite good for gamers which I'm not either... Lol Have not did anything with the Video/Audio part of it. Maybe someday.. SlientRobot is quite friendly and helpful. He will reply on help questions and the like! That is quite Nice and appreciated... I think you did a good job showing us around... @OldTechBloke CUDA is just an interface to set the GPU-cores to work. AMD has something comparable. What would you use it for? Anything task which both a CPU and GPU can execute and which can be well parallized (so dividing up the work over the threads/cores). Video-transcoding, rendering but also scientific compute, things like weather-models and complicated physics (vectors, very easily parallized, Ian Cutress got his PhD with that).

Cudas are part of Intel K CPUs w/ integrated graphics for creative production in addition to graphic card. Question why won't Linux install with Secure Boot UEFI on new motherboards? I'm not a gamer but this is is a production oriented os. Video is a yr old but I'm just finding it because I'm build a new Box & previously just ran w/ Slac kware which takes a long time to learn on your own. So researching Compatible BIOS & Security Boot for all my new hdware to I stall Slackware as a Primary OS again when to my delight I come across new production & multimedia branches of stable Linux Distros. 🤟 To Salient & Linux Community👍 Thank you

Arch distro for gamers? At the end of the day you will need to learn a few things about Linux if you want to have the best possible gaming experience. For example, Steam uses amd-vlk by default if it is installed, you can overrule that but the user has to do that. But some games break with that and perform much better with RADV. There is no shortcut for getting a good gaming performance on Linux, no distro can solve such problems, you just need to get good.

The biggest issue I have with it is I can't use any other drive literally makes this distro shit like they are stuck in read only, don't give a fuck if im root, wont let me delete folders or files. Yet any other distro automatically lets me do this.

I have to say , sourceforge for hosting ISOs ain't not a real deal... Maybe it's me but 15 minutes for 2.7 gigs ... I don't say it's skiddish.. but I just did... Of course I went for plasma and run under 700 megs, wich is almost incredible ( remeber garuda plasma over 900 megs , ok ok zram and all, still 900), but this should not be a problem for a mmedia/gaming machine, anyway still Neon is the king of the day, just because of KDE/plasma , I guess in arch they are not updateing on daily base, kde. As for Salient , I can live with a arch-ish like this :D +1 for me , PS: How much you have to "dig" to the billion?
