It’s crazy to think I started watching Eddie with my brother when he was him and the boys playing that game when they would role play with reekid (I don’t remember what was the game called) they have help me thru so much in my childhood I’m an adult now. I have a really strange and deep relationship with this game. When I was around 14 years old, I was a weird boy. Pretty insecure. Hung out with the "artsy" kids, listened to metal. Wasn't really sure about myself and was trying out a bunch of different ideas. Was learning guitar. Already was forced to deal with heartbreak that took me a while to get over. But being Sally Face stuck with me and gave me an isolated sense of comfort. Sal and I weren't mirror matches, but I related to him a lot. By pure coincidence we even dressed the same and both lived in religious small towns that nobody cared or knew about. We even have the exact same skin color. I felt really comfortable when I hid my face from strangers. I dyed my hair blue and started painting my fingernails black. Eventually I got my ears pierced at home and started wearing black studs. And I bought my first replica mask. I felt so safe wearing it, even in the summer heat. I never took it off unless I was in the comfort of my own home. It broke ages ago after it just couldn't handle any more repairs, and I had to buy a different one that was better. It was shaped to look more human-like, and it had proper nose holes so I could breathe more easily. I let my friends, and my boyfriend (I'd been experimenting for a year or so and only dated a few other guys) at the time, all sign the inside of it. I had my first real kiss when my girlfriend from a relationship further into the future, around 10th grade, lifted up my mask and kissed me. I didn't know it at the time, but apparently Sally Face is a "kin" character for me. Weird, right? Any time I feel depressed, down or especially gloomy, I never think of it as a bad feeling. It's comfortable being alone and cold, I do well enough when I grapple with feelings like isolation. Nothing beats a cloudy, rainy day right in the middle of fall. Sometimes I still revert to Sal when things are getting really rough and I need an escape. I'm 20 years old now. I'm not gonna sit here and kid myself by labeling myself with a mental illness, but there's comfort in escapism. The same mask my friends wrote on, the same mask that saw my first kiss, the same mask that got me through a lot of the doubt and pains of feeling alone even when I knew I had people who loved me, is currently hanging on my wall, by the door to my room. I really need to fix the top straps. I don't know why I typed all of that out. Hope you enjoyed the read, I guess.
