No problem, thank you for watching. Normally that first seal we removed in the first 4 minutes of the video is the only one you need to replace. You'll know the difference buy if the chair is losing pressure, if it's anything like it's getting stuck when you pump it or you feel particles in the pump when you push it. Then you might need to go a little bit further and drain the whole pump.

Thank you for the video . Never thought of doing any maintenance on them. Have one for over 20 years and it won't go down. Holds up and locks perfect but won't release down. I have to push it very hard on it to get it to slowly go down. And this chair holds over 300lbs weight. Expensive chair. But worked for years . I also found some oil released here and there for a while. Any suggestions would be much appreciated before I tackle it down. Thanks

If you take the cap off of the pump it sounds like the yolk, the u-shaped piece might be off centered. But it's hard to tell from the description. Hope it helps

@@TheSalonChairGuys I appreciate the reply. I will have to look at it and take the cap off to see. I know the pedal is pushing on the piston centered. I checked tonight that. Pushes it all the way down and then if I force push more which I will have to stop or I may break it, it goes down slowly slow. I don't understand the term yolk . I apologize for that. But if you mean I have to open it up then that is where the ushape yolk you refer to ,may be something to look at as well? I see it's a pretty simple piston design. But this will be my first time. And maybe start doing maintenance on the chairs too. It Never even pondered on me about it. Thanks a lot. Hope I make sense. But then I don't know what to ask or call these parts names.

Thank you, I would say just a little bit more than a quarter of a quart. I normally fill it up about half way. It just needs enough oil to fill up the inner cylinder so it doesn't need to be full.

That cracked o-ring at 5:22? Didn't see a new one re-installed.

You are correct we did not. That is not an o-ring but a stopper that sits at the bottom of the piston. It's there to stop the piston from hitting the bottom of the base. Some older hydraulic pumps either don't include it or instead used a plastic/rubber stopper or a metal spring, the problem is the stopper disintegrates over time and the particulates get into the hydraulic fluid and clog up the system. Most of the time this is the problem and not an o-ring failure. If you ever step on a hydraulic pump and it feels like it's grinding or pushing little pieces of sand through it. Then that's your problem.

Hi Thanks for your video. At 7:04 , I couldn't see you place the steel ball into the cylinder . Did you put it in after you put the spring in? Does it sit on top of the spring? Thanks for helping!

Yes we did put it back in the cylinder, and you're right it sits on top of the spring. We usually use a pair of tweezers so it didn't video correctly.

Hey, so I've got a salon chair that leaks at the piston and will be ordering replacement o-rings online. Piston diameter measures 1.025". Should I get o-rings with 1", 15/16" or 7/8" ID? Thank you.

It's really hard to tell, because the equipment is made in countries that use both metric and and imperial so the sizes are all over the place. Is best to try to match it using the existing seal. This is the reason it makes it really difficult to recommend a size for seals.

If your gasket and seal company doesn't have a caliper you should probably invest in one if this is something you're going to do often.

@@TheSalonChairGuys Existing o-ring seals measure pretty close to 1" ID. That's only ever so slightly smaller than the piston's 1.025" diameter measured using a caliper. I noticed that the piston never had any resistance or drag as I was sliding it up and down the collar/housing. Thinking 15/16" ID (0.938") o-rings should provide a better seal than the old ones, perhaps.

Do i have to follow all thise steps to take that pole out. Im a bit confused because i have a chair that u can pull it up and the pole comes out attached to the bottom of chair. So now i have a broken hydraulic pump and i cant seem to get the pole to come out with the chair

Some chairs do have the pole attached to the bottom of the seat and you can just pull those up and use a dental pick to pull out the seals, but keep in mind we don't recommend attempting a repair based on this video.
