This is the most important video ever for students AND teachers. Summarizing, styling is nothing more than the ability to express yourself while dancing. Copying your trainer will not develop those skills. The most important things are a sound solid base technique and, with a proper fundamentals, the expression has the right place to grow. Love your video ❤

Is it weird to say I'd love to see a similar video for leaders? I know we are not the ones who are supposed to look good, but I think we'd still like to :)

Absolutely. Some lead styling can really make the musicality work, and enhance the look of both partners. As well as making the dance more fun@@DiegoSepulveda09

I love how you included knowing yourself as one of the points - and that's so true. Also, I'd add knowing your body, its capabilities, limitations, how it naturally moves and what's simply looks good on it. I've got muscular arms that appear longer in proportion to my body and I've got big hands so I've learnt that excessive arm styling isn't for me, as my arms can appear heavy and lacking grace sometimes. However, I love doing footwork and dancing fast so naturally I gravitate towards Cali style salsa. To each their own so go, explore and experiment :)

Thank you for this video, I loved it! And every instructor should bring this topic up in their courses. While dancing so many people want to jump straight away into the dance floor without doing the inner work and either they are stuck in the same steps all the time, or copy steps of someone else without any kind of ground. That becomes very frustrating during partner dance, as it doesn't allow you to connect with your partner while keeping your own individuality. I love this topic. It really explains the importance of basics before any kind of fancy move. 🥰

Thank you for this great video.. I'm not a pro by any standard, but I am an enthusiastic student. And your video absolutely validates everything I have gone through. In Miami everybody- except afrocuban dancers- is very stiff in the upper body. And when I questioned that I was told I'm not a trained pro and to take more styling ( choreography )

I applaude you for questioning, that's means you are noticing things and trying to do what ever you can to get better. You should aim high cause only that way you can reach your potential ✨️ don't stop training and pushing forwards, ask for more 💓

Informative! Even though I'm a lead, I watched this video to see what you were saying to the follows. Could you do a similar video for leads? I've seen leads do really simple moves and make it look amazing. What are they doing different (aside from musicality)? It almost seems like the same advice would apply, learn the techniques first, then focus on shines, and know who you are. However, I see very little videos or classes on lead styling or shines if that's a better word?
@DanceWithRasa

It really goes exactly the same for the leads. Just leads have different styling. I'll make a video on that 😇

As I tell everyone, those classes have helped me transform my dancing. I never liked styling for it's own sake and didn't feel comfortable with the styling that people taught. Now more and more the styling comes out of the movement...and it's been your classes, Rasa, that have initiated that. ❤
